Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

That's a good get. Got some talent waiting in the wings for the 18-19 season.

Since technically we do not have a scholarship to give, we will have to  wait to see about the proverbial "other shoe" to drop.

Good point. I didn't think about that.

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

This is a big time addition. This team is going to be stacked in 2 years. Maybe someone is paying their own way this year? Who knows.

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

HERE IS HOW THE SCHOLARSHIP OPENS UP.  MIKE HUGHES IS A MEDICAL RED SHIRT.  BECAUSE OF SURGERY AND OUT FOR 8 MONTHS THE COACHES ASK FOR A MEDICAL RED SHIRT AND PROBABLY IT HAS ALREADY BEEN GRANTED OR IS SOON EXPECTED.  UNDER NCAA RULES THAT FREES OPEN THAT SCHOLARSHIP FOR ONE YEAR.  THE INJURED HUGHES GETS TO REMAIN ON SCHOLARSHIP.  THE TRANSFERRED HUGHES GETS TO STAY ON SCHOLARSHIP AND REHAB.  THE INJURED HUGHES CANT PRACTICE AND PLAY WITH THE TEAM WHILE ON MEDICAL RED SHIRT.  HUGHES WAS GOING TO BE OUT ANYWAY SO THEY GET THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.  A HEALTHY HUGHES FOR AN INJURED HUGHES WITH BOTH ON SCHOLARSHIP!  CHECK IT OUT!!!

Doesn't have the Akron guard in the PSN story.

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

Grammy, I confess I am not an expert on the NCAA rules, but I have always thought that "Medical Redshirts" are still on roster and basketball scholarship (which counts against the 13 limit).  The player can petition the NCAA for a "Hardship Waiver" to get back his lost year of eligibility (now gets 6 years to complete 4 years of eligibility).  The only way the team gets back an injured players scholarship is to have the player processed with the NCAA as sustaining a career ending injury.  This us called a "Medical Exemption".  The kid's eligibility is then done.

The Medical Redshirt benefits the student, the Medical Exemption benefits the school.  Maybe the rules have changed, but here is an example of how some coaches have abused this rule.

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

We are going to be stacked at guard in 2018, soooooo exciting.  I haven't been this excited in I don't know how long.  The think with KD which differentiates him is that you can see a process of building with quality recruits.  This isn't going to be a one year get lucky with a recruit.  The big guy signing in the Fall, now Hughes to go along with the kid from Mephis etc.  Wow, Wow Wow is all I can say.  Go Dukes!!!

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

Randall, hughes, Lewis II, the little guy, tarin smith and weathers going forward is definitely the best backcourt depth we've ever had in my time as a fan (7 years now). Looks like he could spell at the 3 as well. Another example of a recruit we would get once in a blue moon, seemingly becoming the the standard rather than the exception to the rule much quicker than I expected, even as an admitted optimist.

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

I'm with CLK on this one, redshirt Hughes should still count against the scholarship limit unless he gets a medical exemption, in which case he would have suffered a career-ending injury and won't be able to play again. Only thing I can think of is there's a loophole for transfers who get injured and thus can't practice with the team as transfer-ineligibles typically can, but I can't find any NCAA documentation about this. Please do share a link if you've got one, Gram.

Re: Dukes Land Missouri Transfer Frankie Hughes

Sorry I took so long in betting back to you guys.  I read the rules to mean that since the Akron transferring Hughes was not yet a full-time student that his scholarship spot could be occupied by the Missouri transferring healthy Hughes as soon as he registered a a full time student.  i was wrong apparently.  Here is an article on how the "big boys" use creative math to keep more than the NCAA scholarship limit of players on their roster.  None other than the famous, or infamous, Rick Pitino does this on a regular basis.

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

In the 2011 offseason, the University of Louisville men's basketball team found itself with a roster of 18 players—five more than the NCAA limit of 13 scholarship players for that sport.[7] In the 2010–11 season, the Cardinals had a 15-man roster, but two of these players were walk-ons, placing them within NCAA limits. Three scholarship players departed after the season, but coach Rick Pitino had initially signed a four-player freshman class, resulting in 14 scholarship players plus the two returning walk-ons. Then, coaching changes gave Pitino the opportunity to add a fifth freshman, former Tennessee commit Kevin Ware, and a future upperclass contributor, George Mason transfer Luke Hancock. These signings gave the Cardinals 16 scholarship players.[8]The situation was resolved when three returning scholarship players agreed to become walk-ons for the 2011–12 season. All had originally come to Louisville as walk-ons, but had earned scholarships.[8] What made this situation especially unusual is that two of the three were seniors who were expected to start in the coming season. One of the senior walk-ons, Kyle Kuric, was the Cardinals' only returning double-figure scorer.[9] The other senior walk-on, Chris Smith, was the Cardinals' third-leading returning scorer.[10] Both were financially able to absorb being walk-ons—Kuric's parents are a neurosurgeon and a nurse practitioner, and Smith is the younger brother of NBA player J. R. Smith, who had paid his brother's way at U of L when he had to sit out the 2009–10 season as a transfer.[8]  I suspect that one of the kids transferring in is a walk-on; most likely the 5'8" guard from Akron.   That makes the most logical sense to me.  Hope this is a better answer to the Frankie Hughes potential math roster problem.
