Transfers and the APR

There has been a lot of talk in a number of threads about which players might not be a part of the Dukes next year due to transferring, being run off, etc.  One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that transfers may negatively impact the APR - the Academic Progress Rate.  Bad APR's can result in a loss of scholarships, up to 2, along with bans on post-season play (our luck at Duquesne is that we would have a great team that was banned from the NCAA, keeping our streak alive).

As I somewhat understand it (and I'm certainly not an expert), every semester an athlete can earn one retention point for staying in school and one eligibility point for being academically eligible (usually a 2.0 and a certain number of credits toward graduation).

But I believe that transfers are now treated differently.  In order to not lose an athlete's point, the transfer must complete their semester and have a GPA of at least 2.6.  If someone transferred at the end of a spring semester with a 2.3 GPA, they would earn only 3 of their 4 possible points for the year.  This certainly limits the flexibility of a coaching staff to reshape the roster.  So, the coaching staff might be "forced" to keep a player who doesn't have a 2.6.

Perhaps someone here can shed a little more light on this than I can. For example, how did the departure of PJ Torres affect the APR?  All of the transfers last year?  Is JF boxed into keeping players?  Many questions.

Re: Transfers and the APR

I'm not an expert, but I think the wording is about "leaving school", which I take to mean "dropping out". I wouldn't think that a transfer would affect the APR, regardless of the GPA of the payer transferring.

Re: Transfers and the APR

applecorps, you have to remember that you are talking about the NCAA.  The 2.6 requirement for a penalty free transfer is a fact.

Re: Transfers and the APR

I think penalties are lessened if the player transfers, as opposed to dropping out. This is why coaches now work hard to find a place for these guys, rather than just tossing them in the trash, which is what used to happen.

Re: Transfers and the APR

I know this did not happen under RE in fact his teams had a solid grad @ qpa rate. I know you were referring back to prior coaches. If your a GA fan that would actually be a positive.
