Re: New roster is up

Back in the day (the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s), he could have gone by the name David Caneddy and played another four years.

LOL. back when naive folks think that college sports were clean. It's probably no dirtier now than it's ever been, and certainly cleaner than college football was back in the 1880s and 90s.

This was probably explained, feel free ignore if so, but they lose EJ, Castro and J. Rob next year, gain F and M Hughes, Randall, Dunn-Martin, and Weathers.  Plus Swingle, so net gain of 3 and no more scholarships for Freshmen?  Are Davis & Snyder walk-ons?

Re: New roster is up

Davis & Snyder are walk-ons. The five transfers all count against scholarships next year (Swingle too). Not knowing anything else about the scholarship situation, it seems to me that one open remains for next year. We're waiting for an enterprising journalist to ask & answer for us.

Re: New roster is up

Per Verbal Commits today, Nick Washington is officially a "non-scholarship player," albeit one who was recruited. Which still leaves us with 14 scholarship players on the roster, one over the NCAA limit. There would be one scholarship available for next year, assuming Swingle signs, none if Washington is upgraded to scholarship. That assumes no transfers, never a safe assumption, even under the new coaching staff. As ED mentioned a few weeks ago, Tarin Smith should graduate next year and thus would be eligible to play somewhere else as a graduate transfer in 2018-19 if he so chooses.

Re: New roster is up

DennisC breakdown totally correct.  The only issue on the table is the 14 scholarship issue THIS year.

Re: New roster is up

Yes, that remains the mystery. Either Kratholm or Williams, neither of whom was heavily recruited, is non-scholarship, or one of the 5th year guys or transfer-ineligibles is paying his own way or getting another form of financial aid.

I am of the belief that one of the grad students, most likely Castro since he "left" and then returned, is on some kind of financial aid. I think the financial aid rules change once players have graduated.

Re: New roster is up

Agree that's the most likely scenario. Every indication we've had is that all the new recruits and transfers are on scholarship, except Washington.
