Re: Exhibition Game

JRob with 14 pts and 8 rbs, Lewis had 17 I think. Eric Williams had a double double rebounding and scoring. Thought he looked really great for a first game as a freshman. Castro-Canady looked really good to overall. Really handles himself well on the court and can score. Box score on website I think.

Any approximation of what some of the other guys did pts & rebound wise???

You can see the official stats in the following post, apparently, I am not allowed to post links yet.

A few more observations:
Ditto on Williams, he is long and athletic, could be a strong two-way player. He does need to improve his shooting stroke - 0 for 5 from 3

In line with what we have seen from Dambrot at Akron, there is a strong emphasis on defending the three-point line.. Chatham went 5 for 33.

This does seem to come at the expense of defensive rebounding at times, a greatly undersized Chatham team managed to grab 16 offensive boards out of 48 opportunities.

It seems to me that the Dukes should be much better on defense this season but might struggle to score at times. A lot of points were scored on rim runs over much smaller defenders which may not be repeatable against better and taller competition. The Dukes ended up putting up a solid shooting night from three (9 - 27 33 %) but were dreadful in the first half. I think they were 1 of 10. Hopefully, the shooting will continue to improve.

Nevertheless, I am hopeful that Duquesne should handle teams with lesser talent, which is a step up from recent performances. They might struggle against good rebounding teams and strong defensive teams in general, but it seems they will be competitive in this transition year.

Thanks my friend.  Was checking to see why you could not link, and did not see any problem.  Glad you tried again and it worked.

Looking at the stats, it seems to me that in the early going while we are short handed we are going to need Kratholm to mature more quickly.  With 20 minutes and only 3 rebounds he will need to do more.  This is a great opportunity for him, Williams and Verhoeven to make a statement this year.  There is going to be a huge influx of talent next season and now is the time to establish that they belong and can compete.

Gotta love williams with 13 and 11. Castro looks like game MVP with 15 pts 5 rebs 6 assists. If he could be a complete player this year and not just a microwave type scorer I could see him being our second best player this year.

I don't know about anyone else but I tend to forget how supremely talented he is and how high he was rated as a recruit because of the last couple years.

Re: Exhibition Game

Great year from Castro could be a real difference maker. So different from a couple of years ago!
Still waiting to see a better shooting performance from Tarin.

I would be happy if he could lock down the primary point guard role this year, become a great passer and facilitator, and work the pick and roll on offense. Couple that with being a shut down defender, and his jump shot shouldn't be that important.

I would like to see Castro and Lewis fill more of the off ball scoring guard role as they are both more suited to do that than what we have seen from Smith in the past. The good thing is all three players can play both roles, and you have James and Williams at the three. The depth at 1-3 shouldn't be a huge issue this year, it's 4 and 5 that will be thin and inexperienced.

As we know, the transfers and next year's class will ensure that this team is extremely deep at every position in 2018. One step at a time though....

president, echoing some of 102's comments, I would not hold my breath on waiting to see a high level of shooting performance from Tarin; it's been a knock on him all the way back to high school. He just needs to make his free throws and finish around the basket (5 feet in); anything else offensively is gravy.  He needs to take (and make) the occasional three or outside jumper to keep defenders honest so that he can continue to penetrate.

Tarin does have the potential to be a shutdown defender and he should be able to take care of and distribute the ball.  If he does these things, then he will be a real value for Dambrot's Dukes.
