Don't look at it as a PR thing. Two lives involved, which could be forever changed.

Um, I know that was meant in jest, but as the father of two daughters I've come close to blotting out a couple lives who thought life was one continuous party.

Why don't we let the legal process play out, and let the courts determine his guilt. It would be a damn shame to kick a kid out of school who is found not guilty.

Just to be clear: I am NOT worried about PR and image etc.

Yes, it is about two individuals and the real concern is about what happened, what is true, and the resolution of the allegations. The lives of the people involved are what matter.

The very short note I initially wrote was intended to talk to the effects of the cultural changes of the publicized "hookup culture."  It was a short statement because it was a reference to societal change that was not intended to be specific to this situation.

We don't know that "hookup culture" had anything to do with this. We know none of the details. 35 years ago, the program was basically wrecked by a situation that involved several players in a room with a girl, plus alcohol. This is always a combustible combination. Hopefully, it will all come out in the wash.

I heard that news as well.  Can any of our experienced legal beagles comment on this development?  Is this at all unusual, or would the accuser not be expected to appear at the preliminary hearing?  Was she represented by an attorney in her absence?  Is this a significant event?

If she doesn't show up for the next hearing, the judge would likely toss the charges. This happens a good bit. The alleged victims just decide that they want nothing to do with the case anymore. These cases are often he said/she said cases, so without a victim to testify, they aren't typically winneable.

Sometimes these cases involve questionable judgement on the part of the accuser that they'd rather not get out. Alcohol may be involved, or sometimes the sex starts out as being consensual between the victim, and one of the accused, but becomes a situation where other males who might be present decide that they want some too, and this is where the crime may have occurred. I believe this is the situation that got the rapper Tupac sent to prison when he made a girl he was having sex with, have sex with his buddies as well. Even though a crime may have taken place, some women would not want all of the details to come out, as some of those details may cast her in a bad light.
