Offline I just finished reading the ESPN article on La Salle's 80-71 victory over Boise State-both 13 seeds. It has taken Coach Giannini sinch 2005 to get La Salle to the NCAA's. That is a lot longer than the traditional 5 years, with improvement starting in the 3rd year of a contract. It may take just as long to get Duquesne back to prominence. In a way, Duquesne and La Salle have a bit of shared history. Both schools were good in the 1950's and fell back when the large state schools got interensted in basketball. Both schools shared a common coach, Dudey Moore. LaSalle had players accused of rape in 2004, Duquesne had shootings. La Salle had to clean house. Did Duquesne clean house at the end of last season? All of you have been debating that on this board since Kentucky was scheduled to visit RMU. The point is, Duquesne is on the bottom. It may take 7 or 8 years to get competitive, just like La Salle. I hope it happens sooner. I hope we have patience. Offline Bilgy, Offline I am sure many La Salle fans gave up, or at least wanted Giannini out of there. They probably watched the game last night with a lot of pride. Now they have to figure out how to stay competitive. I too hope Duquesne comes back sooner than 8 years. I may not have 8 years left. Offline LaSalle has the advantage and good fortune to be located in Philadelphia where the recruiting base is far superior to ours. And Giannini was very lucky to get 2 local kids - Ramon Galloway and Tyrone Garland- to come back home after leaving BCS schools. Even with these kinds of advantages, it took him 8 years to get to the Dance. Even with these kinds of advantages, it took him 8 years to get to the Dance. LaSalle got sidetracked by having a selfish player on the team in Aric Murray. They also got held back when they lost Ruben Guillandeaux to injury one year. They've been healthy this year. Got to wonder what would have happened if Melquan Bolding hadn't gotten injured the first game of his sophomore year. It may take 6-7 years to dance, but we must at the very least, be a solid NIT team, and at least in the discussion for the NCAA's by Ferry's fourth year. We may not get a bid, but we need to be where the women are now, at the very least. That was the one thing we never quite achieved under RE. We had some enjoyable teams, but we never reached a point where we were seriously in the running for an at large bid to the Dance, and that's where we need to be within 4 years. There's a couple of differences, some of which I like in duq81 already pointing out. Some of it is that you could see improvement in La Salle even when they weren't winning, and could see signs of Giannini as a good coach. His adjustment to Everhart's 10-40 system by only sending 2 guys to the offensive glass, 3 back on D to prevent fast breaks, and playing 2-3 zone was the first successful adjustment tried IIRC. La Salle didn't win, but it set the staple moving forward how to play against us to slow us down. Giannini made other adjustments, particulary against Richmond's zone, that were copycatted throughout the league. Giannini also proved he could recruit...however like was pointed out one of his best recruits (Murray) tried sabatoging the team before Giannini booted him. However, Giannini did reload with the recruiting, and that was a large part of giving him more time. If Ferry can prove those types of things even if we're not dancing, which is obviously a big if, then we IMO can talk about giving Ferry more years. But let's cross that road if it comes to it. It may take a while, but see if the pieces are starting to come together. I'd like to see in year 4 at least a home NIT game provided there's nothing catastrophic.
Took La Salle a Long Time
Re: Took La Salle a Long Time
NO ONE has that kind of patience! Seven or eight years, c'mon man. If we don't show substantial continuous improvement over the next 2-3 years, I'm giving up.

I agree. Winning season (or close to) next year and 18-20 wins the following year.
