Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Another game that Jim Ferry would have lost, twice GW cut that lead down to three in the second half and they didn't fold.

Loving that in your face defense which keeps getting better and better, as someone else noted!

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Great to prove that we can win when Lewis has an off night. Mike, Rene, and Tarin were a combined 2-13 from three tonight, yet we won by 17. Wait until Dambrot has some big men that are consistent scorers. Gonna be fun.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Plus only  two players with over 30 minutes play time.
Williams at 35 and Lewis at 31.
If this continues, hopefully the team will have some legs in February.
First real road game next.  See how that goes.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Did I just read that box score right?  Eric Williams had eleven (!!!!) defensive boards!  Wow, how in the hell was this kid not recruited?

Whatever talent this team has, Dambrot makes them better.  He develops his players and doesn't blame them.  He teaches.

AND HE CAN COACH DEFENSE!!

How we gonna sneak up on teams if we keep winning?

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Just got back from the game.  A friend I brought asked me what my gut feeling was after the first half.  I told him that a year ago and two years ago and ...I would have said we would probably lose.  However, I said with this coach, those thoughts are gone!  I did have some stuffy folks around me as I was yelling say “It’s only a game” when I was complaining about a few calls.  I didn’t say what I thought!!!
Now at home watching a sold out Dayton Arena take it to the Bonnies.  Such a great feeling knowing we beat them!!!

Eric played in B level in high school. That's one reason he was overlooked.

The other part of it is that he has developed tremendously, e.g. he is rebounding way beyond what he did against HS competition.  It's true, it is hard to grasp how a kid with skills and basketball IQ like this didn't get offers from "upper" major programs.

He could be any kind.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

At the end of the half, #35 on GW was really torching the Dukes. Tydus was doing everything he could, but #35 just was too quick for him to stay in front of. KT guarded him in the second half and he was not able to get any traction.
It was an all around impressive effort by the Dukes. There was a stretch in the second where the officials decided to blow their whistles a bunch of times. The Dukes had a nice lead at the time, but GW was able to start to climb back in. The team held their composure though, and was able to extend the lead.

Renee and Tarin both had a bunch of nice drives tonight, especially in the first half. Erik Williams had a great night, but that is becoming a habit for him.

Coach Dambrot has brought hope back to the Bluff.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Another impressive win.
I have never seen such good defense by a Duquesne team.
That dunk by Eric Williams Jr. with 5:07 left in the first half was amazing.
Our players have become a good team, they work well together and are improving game by game.
Individual improvement is also apparent.
There are still major flaws, but good teamwork helps hide them.
Keith Dambrot doesn't have a chair.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Another great effort from the Dukes tonight! What more can be said of Eric Williams Jr? I also thought Rene and Tarin got into the lane at will to help build the lead in the first half before GW went on the run to end the half.

If it's close, I like our chances. If we have even a modest lead, I love our chances because the defense and offensively we aren't looking to run, run, run but work the ball and get into the many different sets and plays Coach likes to call. Not many teams in our league are playing fast these days so the comfort level playing like this should grow.

We're probably the last team in America to play a true road game, but Saturday will be here and it'll be another low possession, defensive game with Fordham. Defense travels! Go Dukes!

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

After the game, it looked like Kenpom raised us to #187.

Is it my imagination, or is our guard play far better than the last few teams we played?  It seems that Rene and Tarin are creating huge matchup problems for the opponents.  It's amazing to see the change from last year.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

we always complained that both the players we had and the style we played left duquesne always susceptible to giving up 3s.

we're not particularly taller this year, at least on the perimeter. do you know where we rank defensively?

we are tied for 15TH! in the country in points allowed and 33rd in the efficiency
we are tied for 45th in opponents effective field goal %...mostly because we are tied for 4th in the entire country in 3point % on defense.

i'm speechless. that's just nuts.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Don't overlook the contributions of Mike Lewis II.

Did not have his stroke last night. But he defended and showed a lot of leadership on the court. At one point J-Rob committed a foul, and MLII showed him that his arms were stretched forward instead of up.

J-Rob and Chas Brown, by the way, are a fantastic 1-2 punch in the pivot. They can score and rebound, and they bring toughness every night.

Great Point about Kellon Taylor shutting down Zeigler #35; a point that I made to my buddy during the second half.   KT just blanketed him.  I recall Zeigler had one good scoring chance very late when the game was decided and he missed a layup.  Taylor is a great addition to this team with his smart play and toughness, also had a very nice drive and kick for an open 3 to Eric which helped the Dukes open up the lead in 2nd half.  These guys are all playing their roles perfectly right now.  Many kudos to the coaches for defining roles and teaching the players the how to play within their roles to contribute to a winning team.  Very impressed with the two "old guards" (Dambrot's words) Rene and Tarin; really reaching the expectations that we had for them, and they probably had for themselves when they came to Duquesne.  I love the maturity they are showing on the court as team leaders!  In the past we saw flashes their talent, now we seeing them perform to a consistently high level.  Really enjoyable to see this, and happy for these guys including JRob, who endured some tough times.  I thought JRob played his best game to date last night.  He  clearly was a difficult matchup for Steeves, of GW,   when he asserted himself on offense and really played a big part in the Dukes opening up a big lead.  I think making GW work on defense, and against pressure defense really took away their legs in the late stages, and the shots just weren't dropping for them.

Coach Dambrot has brought hope back to the Bluff.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials

Maybe Schmitt should play Kellon on defense!

Kidding, of course. A 6-4, 220 pound receiver is a heck of a weapon.
