Welcome to SHOO-SHOO, RAH-RAH! The Duquesne Dukes Basketball Fan Message Board!
One of America's Great Message Boards - Any Inappropriate Posts Will Be Deleted!
Offline First of all I hope Notice commits to Duquesne - While not a 100% Measuring Stick it is more encouraging to read a player selected Duquesne over South Carolina (among others) as opposed to selecting Duquesne over St Francis and Bethune - Cookman. If he does chose South Carolina hopefully Coach Ferry has a "Plan B" Offline Recruiting landscape was much different in those days. Today any of us can watch these kids on YouTube. Offline Different landscape indeed. Not only the youtube stuff, but you have kids getting scouted, basketball-tutored, and sent to camps when they are barely out of diapers. There aren't as many surprise talents turning up anymore, and maybe fewer "projects" that work out in the end. Offline Mike James came in with almost NO fanfare -- was one of our better players in recent years Remember Sean Rooney????? One of our better players? He was first team all A10, and is still in the NBA. If we had had a decent coach, we would have won lots of games while he was here. Offline Or remember the luck we had with Derick Alston who did a Dennis Rodman and grew 4 inches in college, going from 6'6" to 6'10" after he signed. James was TERRIFIC for D.U. Point I was hoping to make - BASED on what we heard WHEN they signed/committed - Rooney was to be LIGHT years more helpful than James. He was a thug, and ended up never playing for the Dukes. No way to know if would have been any good. That's a bit different than say, Dante Taylor being a 5 star recruit for Pitt, and turning out to be not as good as Gary McGhee, a kid who was a project, and then became better than anyone had a right to expect.
With All This Talk About Recruiting>>>>>
Norm Nixon was part of a 6 player class -- FOUR of them were from Western PA and got REALLY big build ups from both the Post Gazette and the Press (Werner, Maser, Piekarski, Gambridge) We also signed a guard from Cleveland (Guilfoyle who said "He would be better than Norman" - left after one year) Norman was almost an after thought!!!

So sometimes it is the people WITHOUT the Big Build Up who are the REAL Players.
Re: With All This Talk About Recruiting>>>>>
I would have vouched for Rooney myself. Saw him manhandle 7-foot Luther Wright in a state championship game. He was coached by the great Bob Hurley. But he was clearly a troubled kid whose life ended badly.
