Offline Well, all the media reports have the all time WVU-Duquesne Football series record wrong. ESPN and other sources have WVU leading the series 4-3-1 but they are forgetting the first game on November 21, 1896 that Duquesne (then Pittsburgh College of the Holy Ghost won 6-0. Last edited by coffee (8/16/2018 5:38 pm) Offline It is great the Dukes are going to play WVU. But does it mean something? Is there a plan to move to football program ahead? I think that would be great, by the way. Fans here would react well to a strong 1-AA program that once a season of so plays a Big Guy. Offline Offline Our own media guide has us at 3-4-1. But those games were played almost a century ago. Offline I think the best end game is that Duquesne becomes like Villanova in FB. A very strong FBS school that focuses on Basketball. I know Duq81 took a lot of crap about the BE invite, but I agree with him. Nova should be our aspirational program. Offline Simms I'm not sure what you're saying. I think we need to have the on-campus field. Football may someday be able to draw bigger crowds if the Dukes are playing better programs. Maybe even a game or two at Heinz. Offline Rooney screams small time to me. I would prefer that we try to increase the program by playing games at Highmark. There was a thread on this already. Rooney is the smallest stadium in the NEC and it doesn't offer any amenities. I understand the advantage of being on campus, but the Rooney renovations under Amodio were pretty crappy. I'd prefer us to build up Rooney, but I don't see how we can do that. There is no room. Offline West Virginia did play the Duquesne Athletic Club AND The Pittsburgh College of the Holy Ghost (original name of Duquesne) on November 21, 1896 according to some sources losing to both. Not that it matters but this is Duquesne's record book. They're 4-3-2.
Per WVU, 2 games were played against "Duquesne Athletic Club" which in Duquesne's record books was not a team comprised of only Duquesne students.

As to the end game, I wouldn't mind seeing Duquesne upgrade as a program and be a team that can content for the FBS championship every year.

I've said before that I think Highmark is our perfect stadium option unless something is done with Rooney. Rooney is a nice practice field. My only concern is that if Football plays at Highmark, what do you tell our soccer programs? Sorry, you aren't important?

Duquesne's press guide also lists a tie game the following year to West Virginia in 1897 (0-0). According to our press guide, this October 30, 1897 game was the first game made up entirely of Duquesne students against another purely university team.
WVU has the October 30, 1897 game listed as against Pittsburgh Collegians... Pittsburgh College of the Holy Ghost?
I did a lot of digging through microfilm to reconstruct their original records prior to 1903 which was verified by other college's records and the College Football Data Warehouse.
Either way, the first game between the Dukes and WVU was in the 19th Century and was either a win in 1896 (see citation in original post) or a tie in 1897 (both press guides) ... maybe both.
So the all time series record is verifiably 3-4-2 and possibly 4-4-2.
