Close Win

Ladies won by 1 -  58-57.

On the PLUS side Libby had a double-double -  Made the game winning free throw (hit 1 of 2) with like 6 seconds to go.

A win is a win!!!  Temple LOOKED like a team that could give DU trouble (really athletic but small) but they ARE struggling record wise.  58 points won't get it done most nights - but somehow in a really close game the team found a way to come out on the Plus side instead of the Minus side.

Julianna came to life a little in the second half after a pretty crappy first half.

And while it won't show up in the TOTALS -  Some of Paige's points/rebounds/assist came late in the game with it on the line.

Downers include the team continued to struggle with their shooting.

Nina was back in sweats on the bench.

INTERESTING aside -  Starting line up was Libby, Amanda, Connor, Paige and Kadri-Ann.

ON TO OLEAN!!!!!

Re: Close Win

Interesting game. Officials enforced the freedom of movement rules which made the game choppy. However, they were consistent throughout. New lineup with some new sets that emphasized post touches. Kadri is very good at finding the open space for short jumpers. Had two down the stretch. Posts have to learn to how to power to the basket rather than fade away. Posts made some good passes and the ball movement was much better tonight all around. Shooting was still woeful but let’s attribute that to running the new sets for the first time against live competition. Spacing will come. Dukes had more dribble drive passes, which is good. With six seconds left, best defensive players were on the floor to protect the one point lead and they did the job. They doubled Temple’s best player not allowing her the ball. They forced the ball far outside and the shooter never had a chance. Not pretty, but a win. With better shooting (only 31% tonight), the team will do well. Beat Bona!

Re: Close Win

Hook Shot is correct in that the posts have to power to the basket rather than fade away.  After watching post play for as long as I have, I don't think that skill is teachable.  The player either has that ability, or (in the case of our posts), does not.  This lack of powering to the hoop contributes to the reality (voiced many times in the past, including by Coach Burt), is 'the team is soft.'

The only way this problem can be resolved is recruiting different posts.

My other comment has to do with Matt's offense.  I watched it carefully last night on the videocast and I finally recognized a deep flaw.  I think we are all in agreement that this team is not very quick.  That hurts them offensively as well as defensively.  The way you help compensate for lack of quickness is to set hard screens along the perimeter- something many equally challenged mid-majors and even Power Five schools do regularly.

Duquesne players NEVER set good screens for their teammates; meaning they do not slow down the quicker, more athletic defensive players.

Happy the team won, but I saw nothing new that gives me encouragement for the future.
