April Robinson, star and leader of Duquesne's first WBB team to play in the NCAA Tournament, will be honored Sunday. Her number will be retired. Kudos to April. Great player, better leader. Really makes Duquesne proud. Last edited by HookShot (1/27/2019 5:15 pm) It SEEMED like DU had a TON of bad luck with shots spinning out and GW getting some weird bounces and shots spinning IN - For a lot of the game am telling myself - with it being a 10-15 point game probably doesn't matter - when it got down to 1 was hoping for ONE lucky bounce - did NOT get it as Chas's lay up (which was heavilly contested) spun OUT. I agree with Hookshot, its time to put your best 5 players on the floor and keep them there. Lass, Omogrosso, and Juliana should be on the floor the whole game. The last 2 seasons they never came off and we had winning seasons. Juliana and Chass are only playing half the game and we are loosing, and we are wondering why we are loosing. Omogrosso and Juliana can go off at any time for 25 points. The other guards should rotate in and out. And I also agree we should play zone, we cannot keep the guards from driving and no help defense. Although help defense has been getting better. This is the same team as the last two years, the only difference is they are sitting the two top guards (preseason first team and they don't play) I don't understand that part. Love the team, but coaches have to figure it out. Dan is a great coach and he will figure it out moving into the heat of the season. Loved the grit on the second half of game. He should be happy about that. I was hoping to make this about April Robinson ... next time, let's create a new post about game results. Agree with Johnnycoach- 5 best players on the floor; rotate the guards from time to time and play zone. I would add one more suggestion- give Sole more minutes (playing such limited minutes does not contribute to her development) and pair her with Lass to give the Dukes a legit high-low post. Same old story when we lose - the shots ain't dropping & we don't try to make up for it by driving & getting to the foul line. Guess it's a fine line. Shooters always have the belief that if they miss, the next shot will go in. But at the same time, if something's not working, you gotta go to something else. There were a lot of people there to see April have her number retired. The girls from Oakland Catholic where she is coaching were seated right behind me and they were loud and enthusiastic. There were some former players there to honor her as well and I must say I was glad that Suzie was part of the program. Finally, April anchored the autograph line after the game. Johnnycoach: At the START of the year the minutes were more along with what you are proposing BUT: Julianna is shooting 24.6 from 3 point range - Chassidy is shooting 30% from 3 point range - At times JV seems disinterested in defense - she went to the bench on Sunday when the person she was guarding made like 3 layups in 4 trips down the floor - With all the talk of the zone defense - for the FIRST time in the pre game warm ups they practiced a "zone" as one of their drills - In recent games the most playing time has gone to Libby - she had a rough day on Sunday but she has been one of the better rebounders as of late - They actually DO play SOME zone - I've seen Chas pretty much glued to the middle of the floor - JV / Libby/Amanda on the Wings - Kadri Ann/Paige/Laia under the basket as the other team rotates as opposed to chasing individual players. Don't know how much of the 40 minutes this applies to - In addition most of the time when they try to press it is more of a zone than man-to-man. But I think that is a 3-2 zone - perhaps the posters are looking for something more elaborate or that might confuse the opposing offense more. Reading this message board is kind of funny because everybody puts there two cents in. I watched this game and saw a team that only worries about themselves. I thought the seniors would have learned a lot from the team that made the NCAA. That team supported each other through thick and thin and had each others backs. I don't see this with this group of ladies now and its sad because they have so much talent. Remember seniors you have a choice to finish what you started or you can pack it in. It was great to see April Robinson's jersey retired. She was fun to watch in the past because she made everybody around her better. Coaches keep coaching and players keep playing to get better.

April in January
I've been following the program since its inception. April is one of my favorite players to come through the program (along with Korie, Beth Friday, Wumi & Osi, and Donna Zivic). Happy to see her get the recognition due to her!

Re: April in January
Today’s game was a head shaker. With two minutes left in the third quarter, Dukes were down 44-20, shooting 19% and looking like road kill. But they then began to pressure full court. Finished the game on a 34-11 run with a last shot to win. Just not to be. Showed a lot of guts after not being able to crack the GW switching D for 28 minutes. Perhaps we will see more pressure D since the offense woke up as a result of it. Tough loss. Puts us in a tie for second with at least three other teams.

For those who are unaware - Chas landed kind of awkwardly after making a late 3 - she was in a TON of pain - She did return but sometimes those things can worsen over night - good that the team has six days off - HOPING IT IS NOTHING SERIOUS - Lets not forget there is a difference between walking around every day and attempting to play college hoops!!

Sadly, the zone will never happen.

Always a lot of perceptive comments here. I read but am often too busy to reply. I see a lot of support for the idea of playing zone defense. I'm not saying that's wrong, but I'm not so sure that the type of defense is the problem so much as just ramping up the intensity & desire when we're on defense.

The above are OBSERVATIONS from attending the games and watching on the ESPN Package -
I'm NOT going to make ANY suggestions about the PLAYING TIME or WHAT defense they should play - Dan Burt and the staff do NOT drop by MY place of employ with suggestions on how to do MY job better - I am going to give THEM THE SAME COURTESY.
