Another embarrassing loss

Another dreadful showing by the Dukes today on the road against Fordham.

Re: Another embarrassing loss

Many reasons for the loss to Fordham, but I'll try to address just one:

When the game was relatively close, there were multiple occasions when Duquesne had the ball on a fast break, but failed (repeatedly) to score.  Time after time, Duquesne's guards drove to the basket, under heavy defensive pressure, forcing their shots.

Because of their lack of athleticism and quickness, the Duquesne guards should have A) pulled up for a mid range jump shot or B) passed to a more open player for a much easier shot.  Instead, they attempted much more difficult shots that had a low percentage of going in.  Notice how different Fordham's offense ran- they were much better with their spacing and they repeatedly got the ball to players with wide open shots.

Question- Anyone know whether Sole was injured?  If Sole is healthy, just don't understand the rationale of not giving her lots of minutes and teaming with Lass.  As it is, Duquesne's opponents can more easily take away the Dukes' interior game by focusing primarily on Lass.

Re: Another embarrassing loss

This team can be hard to watch.  I tuned in at the start of the second half, while the game was still very much up for grabs.  I saw the Dukes briefly cut into the lead, and then were victimized by a phantom travel call made by a clueless referee.  The replay showed the pivot foot pivoted as is allowed but was never lifted or slid across the floor.  It was a huge blunder by the referee on that play, and it lead to a series of misfortunes for the Dukes, that resulted in them losing touch with the Rams and never recovering.  Fordham isn't a bad team, but certainly not in a team that the Dukes can't beat from a talent perspective.  They played a swarming defense that would have required the Dukes to beat them to the basket, back-cut them, or toss the ball inside to a post player and reverse it through the post, or shoot from the paint.  It was certainly effective in stopping the offense from getting open shots.

Beyond that X's and O's, however, I saw the biggest difference between the two teams to be their competitive spirit.  Their is something definitely missing from this team.  I don't want to get into individuals, because some players seem to play hard, while the team just seems to lack focus in general, and lack organization.  It's like they are a group of private contractors, fulfilling their requirements, but not pulling on the rope in the same direction.  I don't see people doing the little things that win games like taking a charge, when the opponent drives to the basket.  I just don't see the team playing with the juice and passion needed to compete at this level.

I know this team has had a great deal of success over the last 8-10 years, and perhaps they were due for some disappointment, but I don't think anyone saw this kind of performance coming from this group of seniors.  I think we all expected next year to be more of a struggle after losing so many highly respected seniors, but this is a bit of a mystery.

Re: Another embarrassing loss

Levon1975- Agree with you 100%.  There are indeed multiple reasons for the Dukes' under-performance this season.

From my observations (with the possible exception of Lass), the team that Coach Burt is putting in the court continually attempts to do things on offense they are not athletically capable of doing.  I did not see this team doing those kinds of things (last season), to the degree they are this season.  I can only conclude that individual players believe they must take it upon themselves to score; make things happen.

This supports your excellent point totally.  Last season (with the same talent level), they relied on one another and functioned as a team.  This season, they are performing as a collection of individuals.

Also agree with your point about the horrible call at a critical moment in the game.  I follow women's basketball (nationally) and even at the Power Five level, there remains an inconsistency about officiating that you don't see in the men's games.  That (sadly) is going to continue for some time.

Re: Another embarrassing loss

Sperlman,
Definitely agree with your points as well.  The officiating in the women's game is really a disaster.  I've seen officials at least in our league make calls that simply defy all logic and basketball sense.  I know that it's a tough job and everyone is going to make mistakes, but when a ref starts imagining things that didn't actually occur, that is worrisome.  Seeing traveling that didn't happen makes me suspicious about the intentions of an official.

Re: Another embarrassing loss

As pointed out by the previous posts by Levon and Sperlman, it is time to admit that this team is mediocre. Losing Helmi Tuolonen to the pros and Eni Kuttor to illness really hurt this team. The inside game is now non-existent and those two really helped last year’s team to battle inside. The chemistry is off as pointed out. In a league that is winnable, it looks like we will be average.

Re: Another embarrassing loss

On the Pitt Board, it says that the new coach will have at least five 6’3” players or better next year. With a roster of 15 players, this seems like the right amount of bigs. I hope Dan takes note. You never have enough of them.
