Per usual I was wrong about Vincent being interested.   I admit when I am wrong.

I hope this is true, it would be a great hire.

Takes two to tango. Do we know if Darcie is interested in us?

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

Interesting story on IUP women's coach who was just fired.

I think it was interesting because of this paragraph.

Not only did Dow lose his job, he said he had an interview scheduled Friday for a head coaching vacancy at an NCAA Division 1 program he did not name (IUP is Division 2). He felt he had a good chance to get the job. Now he has no chance, he said.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

Tough break for the coach, it looks like he was undermined by some of his players and their parents, who used the opportunity presented by the Rice fiasco to take him down.  I'm sure he won't be the last coach that is in the new anti "RIce" culture.  I still think it looks bad when the parents are so deeply involved, because it calls into question theier motives for trashing the coach.

I wonder if he was going to interview at DU.   I wasn't too impressed with his résumé if he was.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

We need legit D1 coaches.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

Well we have no idea if he is telling the truth, or if it was Duquesne.  We will just have to wait and see.   If the coach is from a D2 program, he was probably going to interview at DU....and that tells me that we have seen the glory days of womens bb at DU.

Speculation based on speculation is speculation to at least the 3rd power.  Predicting the demise of Duquesne's women's basketball program based on this article is nonsense.

I guess you may have missed my point.   I said I didn't know if the guy was interviewing at DU.  Or if he was even telling the truth about having an interview for any D1 opening.

I also said we will have to wait and see.

That being said, if we hire Clarion's or Edinboro's coach, I will stand my point.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

He was pretty successful at his level, but I presume Suzie's replacement will represent the same "next level" philosophy that has been applied to the men's position. That in my mind would rule out both Angus and Dan Burt. Angus had the benefit of Pitt's abundant resources and still got her *** handed to he by Suzie, so I doubt she could come to the land of little toys and somehow start to take Suzie's lunch money. And Burt, while he contributed to our success, hasn't had a successful head gig anywhere. I would interview Burt but not Angus ... personal opinion.

Why would Suzie's replacement represent a "next level" philosophy? Suzie wasn't fired, and probably could have been coach for as long as she wanted.

Why would that philosophy change WRT hiring a coach? We've been to enough NITs. To your point, I think it's fair to say that if Suzie were returning next season, with a senior-laden lineup, the expectation would be NCAAs or bust. Which in my mind means the next coach who comes in will be expected to build on what's here and get us to that level.

I'll go back to Amodio canning a bunch of programs for the sole purpose of creating more focus on men's and women's basketball. In my mind, anything that represents a step backwards - especially for a program that is so close - is irresponsible and, well, stupid.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

Agnus shouldn't be considered.  0-32 in the Big East her last two seasons speaks for itself.  She's also getting paid to not coach the next two years...not sure if she would even be interested or care.

I'd be fine with Burt even though he wasn't a HC before, as would I be with a successful D2 coach.  Crowley from St. Bona was a non-D1 coach before becoming an assistant at Bona then upgraded to HC.  Nothing wrong with hiring a quality assistant either and going the Xavier men's model.

As far as building on SMS's success, it will be much harder from here on out ED.  SMS at Pitt will put up a wall around the WPIAL, and we'll either get 2nd tier locals rather than 1B locals that don't go to a top 10 program like we are now or have to increase the recruiting travel budget in addition to the scholarship budget, as the new coach will likely fill out all schollies.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

Unlike on the guys side - at least the gals seem to have a more adequate supply of prospects each year - with the RIGHT coach (I'm hoping for Darcie -  maybe Shea Ralph former UConn player who was an Assistant at Pitt among others as a dark horse) Duquesne can continue to have a solid team -  It is EASY to tell the ladies involved -  You're Probably not going to play in the WNBA -  you're coming to Duquesne FOR THE EDUCATION!! and hopefully there are enough of them out there that will listen - SMS "strength" at Duquense was probably getting international players such as Wumi and Orsi -  maybe she will continue with that approach at Pitt.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

rogabee, I agree with you that it's going to be difficult to compete with Suzie at Pitt with all those resources. She (or maybe better said Dan Burt?) also has those strong hooks into Canada. The only good news is that she can only command 13 roster spots. Locally, you have to hope for girls who want a good Catholic education, who maybe grow up in Duquesne families (who am I kidding?), who maybe want the opportunity to compete against Pitt. New staff will also have to go outside the city a little, and there really are plenty of good players out there.

Hiring Agnus would be like hiring Danny Nee

The McConnell family aren't Duquesne fans.

I know I'm tired of them.   I know I'm petty.  I admit to that.  I want the Arizona kid to fall on his face and I would absolutely love it is she was fired from there.  She was 0-4 in games that would have gotten us a at large bid.  And she took no blame a couple of years ago saying her players "were not ready for the moment."     I would love that trend to continue there.   Having to hear and see her on TV and the radio will just make me root against that family more.

Lol - I'm proud of my bitterness.   The next shoe is going to be how many of this years DUs recruiting class end up at Pitt.

As I understand it, NCAA rules allow D-1 women's basketball teams 15 athletic scholarships.

Re: Candidates for the DU women's head coaching position

Just as the ARmpitt blocked Shell from going to Arizona our AD can block any of our players from transferring to Pitt.  I just hope he has the colunes to do it.
