St. Pete Shootout

Anyone on this message board planning to attend the St. Pete Shootout this weekend in St. Petersburg, Florida?  Phil95, perhaps?  I'm planning to drive down from Jacksonville in northeast Florida and would like to meet up with any Duquesne fans while I'm there.

This is the year we've all been waiting for.

Beat Austin Peay!

I am trying. I will send a message if I can make it happen.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

Helluva marketing job by whoever runs this tourney. Despite their best efforts some word has leaked out. Apparently no TV or streaming of any kind that I could find.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

Perhaps we should start referring to this as the St. Pete Blackout tournament.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

Hopefully as we get better, we'll be able to score invites to well run tournaments with attractive fields.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

A weekend in St. Pete in December is never a bad thing, though this gym we're playing in at Eckerd College appears to be a less impressive facility than LaRoche has.

It really is pathetic. For the longest time I couldn't even find any information on even the existence of the tournament except that we'd be playing two games in it. To this day I don't think the tournament has even a website. The only information I can find is on this year's division 3 tournament, this year's high school tournament, next year's women's tournament, and last year's men's tournament, which Austin Peay also took part in. There was some talk in another thread that Jarrett Durham mentioned during the Radford game that the games would be televised somewhere. I didn't hear it though, and have not been able to find any evidence of that. I hope to hell we don't play in this one again, as it is obviously a bush league operation.

This is what you get when you put garbage on the floor for 40 years. I expect it will soon get better. Thanks Keith!!

Re: St. Pete Shootout

Pretty pathetic that they apparently don't even have a website and obviously haven't promoted the Shootout.  I'm planning to attend, as long as I can find the Eckerd gym, but I suspect not many others will be in attendance.  Last year's opening round drew a total of 158 people.  Seriously.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

KD has been known to play in some obscure tournaments because of the location and teams in the tournament.  The Las Vegas tournament comes to mind.  This tournament seems to be the worst or all...but the teams you will play are OK and have had good years in the past.  It is a great location for fans at an opportune time of year.  Austin Peay in St. Pete or the small gym you are playing some of your games now??  This is a get away for the team and a chance for low key vacation in the sun for parents and fans.  You see 2 games and get out of the snow and cold. Teams bond in these environments. You will forget how rinky-dink this tournament is as soon as the A10 season starts.  It would not surprise me if some of the coaches playing know each other and agreed to go as a group.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

UAB is a big team, their starting front court is 6'10", 6'9" and 6'7".

Hopefully we handle Peay first.

Team went to Bahamas 2 x and now Florida in December.   Must be nice!

Officiating will be a key. If Mike and Baylee get in foul trouble, it might be tough for us.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

UAB will be a real test for these Dukes.  Three of their 4 losses were to Kentucky, Texas, and Memphis.
If they can make it out of the St. Pete Shootout undefeated, I think there could be a chance to make it into the top 25 rankings.

It will be tough, we still only received 1 vote this week.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

I wouldn't overlook Austin Peay.  Terry Taylor has had a couple of breakout games, including a 39-point performance last night.  He's dangerous — remember how Pistol Pete went off on us in '68-69, ending our nine-game winning streak to start the season.  The Dukes have to keep him in check on Saturday.

That was against a D2 team just to throw that out there. Personally I am much more nervous about UAB. They lost to:
Kentucky by 11
Texas by 10
Memphis by 8

They also play a couple d2s (and we complain about our schedule). Should be a good matchup.

I was -4 years old then, so I dont remember.
Would have been cool to see a legendary player like that tho.
Marcus Camby was the closest thing to that I saw in my day.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

I posted a while ago that UAB would be the toughest team we would play before league play.  With that said...
1.  Before we get to that team, Austin P...and that kid still did score 39
2.  If we can’t beat or be extremely competitive with UAB, we will have a terrible time when we get into league play against St. Louis, Dayton, and more.
So basically, right now the next two games will be a good litmus test for similar AND different reasons.
Go Dukes!

100 pct disagree that a team might have a tough time in their tough league if they lose to a tough team in the nonconference. Situations are based on site of game, time of day, travel, basically dealing with 19, 20 year old kids who decide when and if they're going to play on a given day. Duquesne already has proven it's a player. WIn, lose, draw against UAB, it has no bearing whatsoever on how Duquense will fare in the A10, particularly against the tough teams. Too early in the season to making that sort of comment.

Re: St. Pete Shootout

I respect your opinion Crosseye, but I didn’t say we had to win, I said “or be extremely competitive.”  Yes, it is early, but these games still count.  Hopefully, we will win (and I also believe we will be competitive) and all of this will be moot.  But again, we have a bb game before that one.   Go Dukes!

Re: St. Pete Shootout

Taylor is about 6.5 and leads them in rebounds if I recall correctly. Curious to see who draws the defensive .assignment. Weathers and Austin seem to be the likely candidates.

The team should enjoy the time in the sun while it's cold and snowy here in Pa. As for the gym itself, well as of this October it has bathrooms and showers for both teams...I wish I was kidding, but I'm not.

"“We finally have our own bathrooms and showers. We don’t have to share a bathroom with parents or the opposing team which is pretty satisfying. I’m truly grateful for the renovations with little to no complaints,” sophomore basketball player Doug Williams said."

Hopefully DSnyder is right; we'll run the table in the tourney and forget about the crappy tournament by the time the new year rolls around. Then by the time next season comes we'll never have to worry about such bush league crap again.
