Offline "Vanderbilt is blocking one of its players from transferring to Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday.Sheldon Jeter, a freshman at Vanderbilt last season, announced his intentions to transfer Friday, in order to be closer to his hometown of Beaver Falls, Pa. Sheldon Jeter's pending transfer and Vanderbilt's decision to block Pitt from the mix leaves several unanswered questions in the wake, Eamonn Brennan writes. BlogOn Tuesday, the Post-Gazette reported that Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings was restricting Jeter from transferring to Pittsburgh. It is not known whether Stallings has prevented Jeter from transferring to other schools. A Vanderbilt spokesman told ESPN.com that Stallings "doesn't have any comment" Tuesday. NCAA rules require prospective transfers to first request a release from their scholarships and submit a list of potential destinations. If a release is not granted, a player can appeal to the school's athletic department to overturn a coach's decision. If the appeal is unsuccessful, a player can only transfer to the blocked school if he sits out a season and pays tuition. Offline Good for Vanderbilt. Unlike Duquesne, they frown upon unautherized recruiting trips like the one Duquesne provided last year at Arizona. College basketball has gotten really sleazy recently, and some of these big name "winner" sleaze bag coaches need to get burned and burned bad on this crap. Student athlete ought to mean something, and graduation and transfers should be counted. I thought the one and done rule would stop some of the BS, but instead it just peeled back the vennier. I really starting to lose interest in sports in general. If I want to watch egos, backstabbing, and just plan wrong, I'll just go to work. It has it all. Offline Don't really have a problem with it. Didn't have a problem with Pitt blocking Shell either. You do have to be careful about pissing off high school and AAU coaches if the player is from an area that you regularly recruit from. Offline I have to admit to being torn on this. I love to see Pitt get kicked in the nads, but I hate to see a kid get punished when the Vandy coach could get an offer from a better school and walk away tomorrow. Don't really have a problem with it. Didn't have a problem with Pitt blocking Shell either. You do have to be careful about pissing off high school and AAU coaches if the player is from an area that you regularly recruit from. I thought you had a problem with it. Didn't you say that Pitt was a laughingstock for blocking Shell? And that we can't stop SMS from luring DU recruits away? I thought that was your position then. Pitt was getting lit up for blocking Shell. Should they really care? Also, didn't I say that it was risky to block players because it might piss off local coaches? Learn to read. Pissing off local coaches can be risky if you depend heavily on local recruits. Paul Evans pissed off John Miller. Result, no local players for Pitt for a long long time.
Vanderbilt restricts Sheldon Jeter.....noooooo Pitt
In recent years, coaches have come under fire for failing to grant players their release. St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli drew criticism in 2011 for his handling of little-used reserve transfer Todd O'Brien. In 2012, confusion about the placement of Wisconsin redshirt freshman Jarrod Uthoff's transfer documents led to outcry against Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan and the NCAA rules that allow coaches to tightly restrict transfer destinations.
Jeter averaged 5.5 points in 17.5 minutes per game as a freshman at Vanderbilt. He tweeted Friday that his decision was "due to some personal issues" and a desire to be closer to his family in Beaver Falls."

I think the difference is that I suspect some schools (Arizona, Pitt) are ready, willing and able to cheat, so OK, I don't have any problems, net-net, with Vandy's decision.
