Not sure if anyone's shared on here before, but came across some old newsreels of Duquesne basketball and football highlights from yesteryear on the Getty Images site. As I recall my Dad explaining to me, this is what was shown in movie theaters before the movie in the days before everyone had a TV in their house to watch the news. Check them out at: Did that guy rip his own toupee off during the Dayton game? :-) Yep. Isn't that awesome? Good stuff DennisC91. I suspect everyone in the Garden had a wager on the games especially Mr. Toupee 🥴 In the 1954 NIT Finals vs. Holy Cross, you can spot Sid Dambrot, #5 in white. Pretty cool. Thanks, DennisC91. Mr. Toupee would have turned to Marty Krugman (AKA Morey Last edited by DennisC91 (3/20/2020 8:47 pm) Very nice distraction indeed!! I wonder if our fans complained about the newsreels' coverage of the Dukes in those days. ;-) Thanks Dennis. Really enjoyable. I'm old enough to have witnessed the Glory Days of the mid '50's. Dukes were the only winners in town then. My father always said he bled red n blue, grew up on the bluff n loved the Dukes. Once upon a time they were a power, even in football My father always said he bled red n blue, grew up on the bluff n loved the Dukes. Once upon a time they were a power, even in football Grew up like as a kid he lived in the bluff? That'd be pretty neat, the area is so much different than in those booming times in the burgh. He lived on Vickroy and Locust from the late 20s through the late 50s. 1940 NIT championship game between Duquesne and Colorado. If you miss the days of the two-hand set shot and underhand free throws, you'll love this one. They might be shooting foul shots underhand, but each team had a Steph Curry long before Steph Curry. In the days of no 3 point shot or shot clock, why anybody would shoot from that far away I don't know. Both made the shots though. Those are some impressive high-arcing, long-range shots and I love that pick-and-roll type play that sets up the backdoor layup. Of course these are just highlights. There's also a bad miss of a shot in the paint. Given that the final score in this one was 51-40, Colorado, I suspect there were a lot of ugly plays like that. And that was a high-scoring affair for this tournament. To get to the championship game, the Dukes beat St. John's, 38-31, and Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State), 34-30. Those scores are reminiscent of the 9-10-year-old rec league I played in when I was a kid. For the record, we won our league championship game when I was 9, 43-37. ;-) He lived on Vickroy and Locust from the late 20s through the late 50s. Not just on the bluff but on present day campus!! Awesome! The whole area is a whole lot different since those days. Dayton is very big, especially for that era, but they're fairly stiff in their style of play, very old fashioned. The Dukes are much more fluid, especially Si. The Duke's style of ball is much closer to what we see today. Agreed. Dayton had a 7-footer, Bill Uhl. Doesn't really have the footwork or the hands that top bigs today would have. Still led them in scoring with 25 points in that game. Si, at 6-3, was in charge of guarding him for most of the game. The late Phil Axelrod wrote a story about the game on its 50th anniversary 15 years ago: A modern self-isolation distraction: Sincere Carry's 2019-20 highlights. How about another highlight video why not? Baylee Steele this year: Newspaper article recapping the 1940 postseason. Adds flavor to the newsreel clip. Well to say that terminology has changed over the proceeding 80 years is an understatement. The other thing I immediately thought reading that was that kind of attitude may have been why Davies was so much less successful than Moore in the postseason. Very interesting read nonetheless. Thanks Phoenix. Last edited by luckymcd (3/25/2020 8:01 am) Newspaper article recapping the 1940 postseason. Adds flavor to the newsreel clip. Interesting Headline. Politically incorrect....Maybe Well to say that terminology has changed over the proceeding 80 years is an understatement. The other thing I immediately thought reading that was that kind of attitude may have been why Davies was so much less successful than Moore in the postseason. Very interesting read nonetheless. Thanks Phoenix. Davies wasn't really unsuccessful. He reached a Final Four, and an NIT Championship game. There was no postseason for most of Davies tenure, and when the NIT and NCAAs came about, there were never more than 16 spots available. As a result, the Dukes only played in the postseason 4 times under Davies. His greatest teams (Paul Birch) came in the pre tournament era. There were many more bids available during the Moore era, with 34 bids available from 1953 on. As such, it's not really a fair comparison. Keep in mind also that in an 8 team event, you're facing an elite team immediately. In a 16 team event, if you're a high seed, you get an inferior opponent in your first game. Makes a difference in your final record.
CURRENT RECORD 9 - 14 (4-6 in the A-10)

Reliving the glory days. Good self-isolation distraction
Highlight reels include:
1933 Duquesne-Pitt football game in a packed Pitt Stadium.
1936 Orange Bowl as the Dukes down Mississippi State.
1940 NIT championship game between Duquesne and Colorado. If you miss the days of the two-hand set shot and underhand free throws, you'll love this one.
1954 NIT championship game as the Dukes go down to Holy Cross (2 videos). Holy Cross plays like something out of Hoosiers.
1955 NIT championship game as the Dukes beat Dayton (2 videos). Si Green looks like two different players between '54 and '55. Not sure if he was sick or injured in '54 or just developed into a more complete player from one year to the next.
Enjoy and stay safe!

The story also gives you an idea why the private schools, especially ones from the east, frequently turned down NCAA bids in the early days.
