Two Dukes in Top 5 of the Fab Fives.

I was a student at the time, only heard rumors, but why was there such a thought Fortson was coming to DU and why didnt he? Fortson, Price and Pipkins would have been something.

The reason Fortson was considering Duquesne was because of the Stright family. Mr Stright had put an AAU team together. He had Fortson on his team. He then moved the Fortson family from Altoona to Shaler to play with his son on his high school team. Duquesne stepped out and gave Justin Stright a scholarship to Duquesne with the hopes of them convincing Fortson to come to Duquesne. Nice try but to no avail.

Edgar was the coach, so it wouldn't have mattered.

We were in his final choices, we were right there. Could not close the deal.

John Carroll was the coach that recruited Fortson and signed Justin Stright in the hopes of landing Fortson as a package deal. Signing Fortson might have saved Carroll's career. Would have been a nice recruiting class: Fortson, Mike James and Kevin Price. But J.O. Stright steered his best players to Bob Huggins, who was the coach at Cincinnati at the time. Price and Tom Pipkins were AAU teammates of Fortson's on the JOTS, but I don't recall that Duquesne was ever seriously in the running for Fortson. Some folks may remember differently. Billy Curley's smaller and much less talented younger brother joined James and Price (and Stright) in the '94 recruiting class before transferring down to Boston U after two years. As for Justin Stright, he got into five games in the 1994-95 season and was never seen of or heard from again in Duquesne basketball circles.
