There is almost nothing on line about "the incident". What I remember was Emmet Sellers and three other guys were charged with assault, and that wrecked the team. I just looked up Sellers and he played four full seasons with the Dukes.
I thought he was expelled. Anyone care to fill me in on the details?
Thank you

I wasn't familiar with it at all because it was long before my time. I found an article that at least gives some context though.

thanks. Wow the LA Times. He pretty much answered my question. Sellers came back but was never the player he was before.

It's a shame. Satalin was never able to pull it together after that. He seemed like a home run hire when he came here too.

I remember reading this many years ago. Alan Robinson was the local AP sports guy for many years. This was way back in 1988. Little did he know how bad it would get, and that there would be only one winning season in the next 20 years.
What's ironic is that three of the programs he mentioned as being in decline, Xavier, Dayton, and Marquette, are in good shape now, and the three urban Catholics that were dominant when the article was written, Georgetown, St. John's, and DePaul, have now hit the skids, with St. John's and DePaul going into their decline not long after this article was written.

Follow up question: Other than Sellers, how good or essential were the other three guys?

Stevenson, and Harrison had very nice freshman years, and looked as though they would be major pieces going forward. Both were frontcourt players as well, which of course are harder to find than guards. The point guard, Eric Compton, was less impressive, although as a freshman, he didn't play a whole lot, with senior Andy Sisinni getting the bulk of the minutes. To be honest, most thought the future looked very bright as this team was going to be together the next two years. This was nearly as big a blow as not having Mickey Davis, and Ed Searcy on the 1971-72 team, the difference being that this could have been an NCAA team while the Davis/Searcy team would have been a Final Four contender.
