Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

Bad news if you were looking to see college basketball resume in November. The Ivy League is cancelling all sports for the rest of 2020. That means no basketball in November and December. If you think this isn't significant, remember the Ivy League was the first to cancel its conference tournament in March. The other conferences soon followed suit. Sports Illustrated expects something similar to happen this time around with the start of the college basketball season likely pushed back to January.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

It appears only conference games will be played.
Challenge for KD and staff to be ready.

CMU just cancelled sports but the most concerning news is Stanford power 5 PAC 12 school cancelling sports.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

just saw a commercial for the kdka friday night sports talk, its all pitt.   H Lyke will be on, so maybe she will know something.  It looks pre recorded, so it might not even touch on the Ivy league and cancelling their sports.   Capel and someone else are on too.   Maybe the pitt homer hosts will question them on not playing us.....doubt it.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

If the season is delayed until 2021 we may have  a shot at playing our home games at the Coop instead of being a road show for the beginning of the season.  Maybe things even out in terms of the virus and the Coop opening.

No ooc games will allow them to screw us. This is a year where the A10 was poised to do damage ooc. A great ooc record gives teams in the league a bit of wiggle room at the end of the year. It can be the difference between getting a bid with 23 wins, and going to the NIT with 25. With no chance to bolster our records ooc, you can bet the powers that be will take the easy road, and assume that we suck.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

Big Ten just announced fall sports will be conference only... I think there might be some hope for major conferences to still play... do we really think there will be no college football season whatsoever? The way the cases just keep going up here in America it seems we are heading in that direction.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

Last year in this situation we would have had to scramble to find two more noncon opponents in Princeton and Columbia. No Ivy League mashups for the Dukes this year anyway... not that it's too big of a deal because the season isn't even guaranteed.

Agreed. The way the NCAA Tournament works the A10 NEEDS non conference play to get the respect it deserves. Power conference teams probably feel the opposite way.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

No doubt it plays into the hands of the mediocre P-5 teams to make the field and leaves out the non P-5 schools who don’t win their conferences. Isn’t that just what the NCAA has been pursuing for years!  Load it with P-5 and keep them in the fold; allowing the NCAA parasites to keep milking the system!

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

We still have some time for sure until we find out the format of what this season will really be like. We still get to see how all of the pro sports do first when they come back.

Big IF

If the NCAA / Universities cancel sports for the academic year 20-21, what does that mean for athlete eligibility?

If the student athlete is on a roster & the university is in season but the sport season is cancelled - is that a consumed year toward eligibility?

Probably not, as they extended eligibility for the spring sports that were cancelled. It creates a mess though, as kids are still coming out of high school, and this will clog the pipeline. At the highest level, I guess that many players will just move on to the pros. How awful would it be if the season was cancelled, and Mike and Marcus then decided not to come back, but go play in Europe?

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

Mike and Marcus could not return if this season does not take place.I think Barry Alvarez AD  had a issue with this and NCAA supports that seniors would not be granted another year of eligibility.
We gotta pray that a vaccine is discovered very soon. This virus is way out of control.

Actually, many experts think an effective treatment is a more realistic short term goal than a vaccine.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

The power 5 will squeeze the mid & minor conferences for the tournament if we have one. Because of the nature of this epidemic the NCAA should open up the tournament. OK give the over rated power 5 teams a 1st or 2nd round bye based upon their conference record. But I caN assure you that upsets will occur just like every March. Great ratings especially with Cinderella teams. The non power 5 should demand this unique opportunity to expand the bids. Remember broadway Joe & the Jets 18 point underdogs. That game changed the NFL. IF POWER 5 refuses file a class action lawsuit. Unfortunately the NCAA cares about their paycheck. It’s time to go to war. Sherman anti trust act plus tax payers money supporting garbage programs like Pitt.

Re: Here we go, Ivy League cancels fall sports

The seniors like Mike and Marcus would have used up their eligibility if there is no season due to virus.
The players that are being recruited for next years team would take their spot on roster.

They already set a precedent by giving the athletes that missed spring sports another year of eligibility. No way they could not do the same for fall and winter if the seasons are missed.

This is  exactly what I see happening. In order to do this, they will also have to expand rosters.
