Richmond game postponed

I honestly cant remember if this is new news or old.   Seems like the Dukes have had covid for a month now.

I believe it was reported earlier. I thought I saw a reference to it in Dipaula's story in the Tribune-Review.. Looks like maybe the A10 just making it official today.

Re: Richmond game postponed

If all goes well from this point; Duquesne will be "paused" due to Covid until at least 12/20.  Given that they will need 3-5 of practice to get the legs back; then Christmas,  so playing a game before Dec 26-27 is unlikely.

Re: Richmond game postponed

Looks like the Dukes got hit hard. A story on DK Sports has 14 people associated with the team having covid. Twelve of them being players.

Re: Richmond game postponed

If thats the case, then we can only hope they are minor cases/symptoms and all the guys make it thru ok.   Bball is irrelevant right now honestly.    Fingers crossed they all come out of this okay.

The juice from the Lville trip was not worth the squeeze.

No kidding. Nine teams played in Louisville. All nine had games afterwards cancelled because of Covid.

Seton Hall - Cancelled the scheduled opener in Louisville against Winthrop because the Pirates wouldn't have time to practice after coming out of quarantine. They travelled to Louisville to face Louisville anyway. Two days after that game on November 29 their home game against Baylor was cancelled, although it was Baylor who had the Covid issues.

Winthrop - Travelled to Louisville two weeks after multiple positive tests. Postponed opener in Louisville against UNC Greensboro scheduled for November 29 hours before tipoff "out of an abundance of caution." The schools issued a joint release about the postponement, but Greensboro's players had already dressed and taped up for the game. They played the game just two days later at the same site.

UNC Greensboro - Was able to play the rescheduled game against Winthrop because their game against Prairie View scheduled for the same day (December 1) was cancelled because of Covid issues on Prairie View's team. Further games on December 4 and December 11 were also cancelled.

Louisville - Played Prairie View at the bubble before Prairie View's issues were known. Five days later (December 4) their scheduled game against Greensboro was cancelled because a Cardinal player tested positive. Their December 16 game was later postponed.

Duquesne - Played Little Rock and Greensboro in the bubble, but their scheduled game two days later (December 4) against Winthrop was cancelled because two coaches tested positive. Games scheduled for December 14, 16, and 19 were later cancelled or postponed.

Little Rock - Played Greensboro, Duquesne, and Winthrop in the bubble. They cancelled their game scheduled for December 4 against Western Kentucky in the bubble. A game scheduled for December 15 was later cancelled.

Western Kentucky - Played Louisville in the bubble, but hours later found out their game scheduled for two days later (December 4) was cancelled.

Prairie View - Scheduled 7 games in the first 11 days of the season. Played three of them in the bubble, then cancelled the remaining games after a player tested positive.

Evansville - Faced Louisville and Prairie View in the bubble. Afterwards cancelled games scheduled for December 6 and December 12 because of Covid protocol.

Re: Richmond game postponed

Watching Dayton vs. Ole MIss.  National Coverage again for Dayton - playing hard.  Wondering what they are doing that we aren’t in terms of safety, (I understand their tv coverage), excellent competition, etc.  Their coach (this is not a negative, backhanded comment on our coach) is excellent.
Go Dukes

As far as safety, we don't know what's going on in the program with Covid. At a bare minimum the environment in Louisville was not as safe as it was supposed to be. Louisville was very careful in not calling it a bubble, but they still promoted their safety measures. As my last post said nine teams played there, nine teams have had Covid issues. There could be issues beyond that, but only the team knows. Hopefully not, but it could be a "you don't know what you don't know" situation. It has been for most people who have caught the virus.

As for the competition, it goes hand-in-hand with their performance. Even if Dayton has a down year beating them out of conference is still seen as a good win because of what they've done recently. If they play as expected then the numbers back that up. If we can string together 3-5 seasons with last year as the worst, than we'll garner enough reputation to be able to improve our schedule too. Outside of western Pennsylvania and alums, the only people who know anything about Duquesne basketball know it as a bottom feeder, a once great program, or the team that got stuck in the blizzard. Even a season like last year doesn't qualify as a quality win for people into metrics.

luckymcd, thanks for all of the research. Clearly the Louisville event turned into a COVID wonderland. When are the Dukes going to catch a break?

Excellent post. You don't rebuild your brand overnight, and other than alums, and people paid to follow basketball, seasons like last year aren't really going to move the needle. It was fun for us, but no one else really cares. Stack a few NCAA years, and attention, and respect will come.

Re: Richmond game postponed

I agree, the program won't be taken seriously until it makes the Tournament, by either winning the A-10 or getting an at-large bid.  Actually, given the current state of affairs, winning the A-10 is the only way Duquesne will be sure to get the bid.  When they hand out at-large bids to the A-10 they will choose more recognizable names rather than Duquesne; even if the Dukes have a good case for inclusion.  Dayton, Rhode Island, Davidson, VCU, and St. Louis have all been able to get games against higher profile teams while the Dukes seem to be unable to get a game with anyone above their own level.  Compounding that is the long " pandemic pause" which puts us in a position to have only one route to the NCAA Tournament,  and that is to win the A-10.
