Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

I really thought GW would be better than this so far. I know they lost their leading scorer and rebounder from last year's team but they added a couple of Power-5 transfers to a decent nucleus of returnees. Crushed Fordham the other night, hope they're not starting to figure it out.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

The Dukes owe this team.  Losing to GW at home last year was the worst loss of the year for the Dukes and knocked them off of the bubble (before COVID burst all bubbles).  It would be great to get 2 wins in Foggy Bottom to start the conference games.

Let's keep an eye on that lefty who likes to toss up the 3's.

Okani and Kelly doing well but refs seem to be off their game a little.

Okani is good!

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

Really impressed with the bench today. Okani and Kelly both looked really good. Marcus and Tavian both played well but Sincere and Mike need to play better tomorrow. Really like this team's depth. They have 10 legitimate division one players on this team.

Toby Okani looks like he can be a special player.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

Dukes have   a good chance to win tomorrow.
GW played 8 players; Dukes played 12
Fatigue has to be an issue for GW
Dukes had solid defense especially on the 3 ball

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

Funniest moment today. Felt bad for Hughes when he got the "Butt Travel" call on that tie up with Rotroff on that rebound early in the game.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

Okani just could not miss today. Amari looked great too... Hopefully things continue to come together, having these two games against an opponent like GW is a big help. Whenever Murphy was on the floor he did great too, his vision and patience driving to the open gaps is fantastic, and with how much he has traveled maybe he can be our guard version of Baylee Steele... or better.

These youngsters probably going to supper and to play ball the rest of the night. I'm not counting on the fatigue factor but I'm worried about the better free throw and 3 point % factors.

S.R.M., I don't disagree that Carry and Hughes need to play better tomorrow, especially Sincere Carry. However, the common misconception with Hughes, and why he never seems to get much love from anyone announcing games or voting for top players, in my opinion, is because he really is not a scorer. But the guy nearly always seems to find a way to produce. As much as you might want to say he was invisible today, check out his line. He didn't have any steals even though he causes so much disruption, and that's rare, but the rest of his line, despite the perception that he didn't  play that great, is as follows:
26 minutes, 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks, 0 turnovers. He also made 5 of 6 free throws and 1 of 2 3-point attempts. He is a guy who just might get some NBA attention with that sort of performance. It happens all the time and he deserves more love because of it.

We tied our record of 3 road wins in a row. Could be a record setting performance tomorrow.

Great observation on Hughes.

This was also an interesting game for TDM. He did a very good job running the show when Sin sat. His defense was also smart & disciplined. Both of these are very encouraging to me.
Unfortunately, both his shot selection & shooting were terrible. The amount of deep,sideways-fading 3s he takes is ridiculous. There are only a dozen or so players on the planet that can make these shots at an acceptable rate of accuracy; he isn't one of them.

Will Lamar find his shot? He does so many other things well.

What is Maceo's scoring game? He is a very good ball mover, team player, & defender. I would really like to see the baseline & alley-oop plays they ran for him in the non-con last season get some use. They kept him looking to score & created nice movement when the shots weren't there.

I loved the coaching today. It was so smart to go deep into the bench on the front end of a back to back. Also, the inbounds play calls were spot-on.

Gotta win tomorrow!

Crosseye, agree. Mike is a savvy team player. As you pointed out, he quietly posted that solid stat line. Mike is going to make some coin playing professionally overseas.

I’m still waiting to see something from Austin. He looks so passive out there; he has no confidence in his game.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

-I actually think Hughes contributed - I also like that when he blocked a shot near the end of the game instead of thumping his chest, he went over and helped the GW guy up - hope this continues.]
-TDM missed his first two free-throws
-Wondering if Okani eventually takes over for Maceo
-Coach has a number of “good” players” who can all contribute - this will definitely be a plus

Go Dukes

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

Nice opener.   Okani was nice to watch.   That drive on the break to go down the lane with speed and composure was A+.   If he and Kelly gain confidence, look out.   Tomorrow will be huge, a good start under all these conditions will go a long way.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

It's one thing to win because the Core Four of Hughes, Weathers, Carry and TDM all had big games, as in the UNCG game. It's another thing altogether to win because other guys beyond the Core Four stepped up and had big games, in this case, Okani and Kelly. Even Rotroff was effective in limited minutes. We won comfortably even with Carry on the bench for 12 minutes and Hughes and Weathers in foul trouble and eventually fouling out. Strange to see a team in command of a game even as foul calls are going more than 2-1 against it, but whatever. It's these kinds of wins that give me hope that this team can take that next step this year. Provided we're actually able to have a season.

Re: Game Thread - George Washington Colonials (A)

This game shows an incredible coaching performance. The team looked drastically improved from the last game. Dambrot managed to bring together a cohesive unit and coach up the young players even with barely any practice. We may not get a single guy on the first team all-conference, but we might also have the deepest team in the league. Bringing back pretty much the entire core from last year, getting the young guys early action (and having them perform in it), plus Kelly finally looks healthy, is a recipe for success in our league and hopefully beyond. GW doesn't have a good team and under normal circumstances this wouldn't be anything more than an expected easy win. Getting this performance after a month with barely any team activity is huge. We should do even better tomorrow.
