Re: Pro Am Summer League

Appreciate the obersvations Grammy. Gill has been playing well all summer, at least statistically (for those of us who haven't seen him). Should give us another good scoring option this year, and might step right into Ovie Soko's starting spot in the lineup next season.

Re: Pro Am Summer League

Soko, Gill, Jones and Ridenour have made the league finals with an impressive win over the pro team South Hills Audi, 108-90. The game is at 7:15 tomorrow at the Greentree Sports Complex. I would encourage anyone available to attend to come out and cheer on your Dukes as they play aganst Talib Zanna, James Robinson and Lijah Thompson

Re: Pro Am Summer League

It's always good to get good reviews from people outside of the program. Those posters are among the most knowledgeable Pitt fans, so if the Duquesne players are impressing them, that's a very good sign.

Re: Pro Am Summer League

Steve will have a more expansive blog to be sure about the final game tonight at Greentree.  Thought I'd share my thoughts without telling you the numbers.  If the rest of the team plays as hard as White, Ovie, Jeremiah, Desmond and L.G. Gill did tonight we are in for a huge treat this year.  Our kids did not give an inch or ask for one against the Pitt line-up of Zanna, Robinson, Mike Young and Jamhal ?.  No one was intimidated in any way by the perceived more talented Pitt players.  At the risk of being a homer, this is the most parity between the two shcools I have seen in ages.  Ovie was ready to duke it out with Zanna who took exception to a hard block on the ball.  Both got T's.  In a real game both would have been ejected.  Neither offer a hand in friendship after their tussle.  Gill still has that shark in the water attitude I previously mentioned.  White will electrify us. Jeremiah Jones is the most improved of the lot-previously I though Colter was.  He showed his 42 inch vertical leap a few times.   Ridenour is getting more and more comfortable-he doesn't lay down on defense.   I am impressed to the hilt with our recruits.  By the way the new Dukes lost to the Pitt kids by 6.  (109-103) All five Dukes had high double figures.  It was a good game to watch.  Better yet it was an enjoyble summer of hoops.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Chris Adamski's account of the Pgh. Men's Pro-Am Summer Basketball Championship game is written as if he were working for the Pitt Athletic Department.  Little mention of the play and stats of the Dukes on the Lair team.  Perhaps "Unfair and unbalanced" might be his motto.  http://triblive.com/sports/otherlocal/4415479-74/zanna-league-pitt#axzz2a33mah33

Here's the P-G's coverage of the game:  http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/sports/pitt-big-east/mvp-talib-zanna-dominates-in-pro-am-title-game-696737/

Re: Pro Am Summer League

Bethca if you drew some blood and made him pee in a cup, you'd find HGH, testosterone or roids. Anyone who wants to argue with me on this one, go ahead and have your say. I've talked to enough people to know that it goes on all the time in all sports at BCS schools. It's what they call advanced weight room techniques.

Local sportswriters are too frickin' dumb to figure it out, or they're buttboys for Pitt.

Whatever. Cheatin' ain't winnin', it's cheatin'.

I don't doubt that there is a lot PED usage going on in the college ranks, but I'm not sure Zanna is a first guy I would point a finger at. He's more wirey strong than what I would think of as the typical steroids build.

Of course, that head butt on Ovie looked a lot like 'roids rage to me.

BTW, that incident with Ovie and Zanna gets glossed over in both the papers, but it was very close to escalating into something big. Both benches cleared and the Pitt and Duquesne players not in the game were at the ready. Refs had ZERO control in this one.

It's been this way all summer. Every newspaper article has been about a Pitt player in the Pro-Am. I was beginning to think that the entire Pro-Am League was a Pitt intra-squad league. I'm anxiously awaiting their next feature article on the Pitt basketball waterboy and the tremendous upside he represents and how highly rated he was out of high school. Sooooo, what's new. Until we slap Pitt a few times, nothing is going to change--including the non-coverage from the sportswriter assigned to the Duquesne basketball beat.

Re: Pro Am Summer League

I have to say that the summer league play of the Dukes has bolstered my expectations for next season.  No way the Dukes should finish at the bottom of the A10.  I know much depends on developing team chemistry, but with the play of Soko, Jeremiah, Colter and the newbies this summer anything less than a winning season and middle of the A10 pack finish would be a major disappointment for me.  Add Watkins, Mckoy and Mason and the Dukes should have enough talent and depth to do more than that.  I don't want to get too optimistic as their are a lot of variables. I will say however without a doubt that there are going to be a lot of people who will be surprised by this Duquesne team.  Love the comments on the Pitt Board.  Go Dukes!

Re: Pro Am Summer League

Good report Gram, pretty much how I heard it went down.  Zanna getting his shot blocked by Ovie and taking exception to it by trying to head-butt Ovie.  The key is that these Dukes will not back down from Pitt or anyone else!  The rivalry is back!

As it should be. Remember, we were the third best team in town last year, not second best. Bobby Mo didn't edge us, they pimp slapped us like a used up whore. The other two teams in town are competitive in their leagues, and go dancing. We haven't had an NCAA worthy team in 40 years. I just can't Complain and cry about the coverage at this point. The lack of coverage reflects the lack of interest around Pittsburgh. Hopefully we're on the verge of fixing the problem.

Re: Pro Am Summer League

Coach Ferry said all last season he needed players who could defend, rebound pass and score. Perhaps he is finding them and bringing them in.

Re: Pro Am Summer League

Steve, I pointed the finger at the entire Pitt program. I get awful suspicious with the "no one spends more time in the weight room than he does" kind of talk.

They (the proverbial "They") said the same thing about A-Roid once.

Let Zanna have the summer league thing. Would love to see the Dukes take those cruds down at the Consol this year.
