To evaluate a basketball program you have to start at the top and work your way down to the bottom. The president has shown a commitment to the basketball program that we have never witnessed before at Duquesne. Gormley hired an aggressive Athletic Director in Harper. The two administrators went out and spent a million dollars to get a coach that was not willing to come here in the past. They went out and got the funding to upgrade our facilities to be competitive in the A-10. Harper set up the out of conference schedule so it would appear that we are on the improve and to give the coach time to figure out his rotations and still achieve a winning OOC record. That meant getting rid of some good teams for the OOC schedule. So basically our record the past three years has been on the improve because of the weak OOC schedule. Both of these men deserve an A grade wise for what they have accomplished to this point in time. So, you don't want to hear about covid? How so? That's the main issue here, isn't it? It would be incorrect to say all teams are living through this, assuming you essentially mean they've all been affected by it. I would respectfully disagree that all teams have NOT been affected. In fact, the majority of teams have not been paused, therefore, those players are in tip-top shape. The issue here is this Duquesne team is a shell of what it's supposed to be. The players are nowhere near in game shape. That was evident last night, thus leading to many of the problems you point out. Call it an excuse, because it is. But it's a very valid one. If you can't breathe properly, how can you run up and down the floor for 40 minutes with a team that has no similar issues. No offense intended on this post, but this team went an entire month without the benefit of even practicing at times. Almost every player on the roster was inflicted. The mess they're in didn't happen overnight, so I don't see it getting better any quicker. -It’s still early. Last year we weren’t as good as our undefeated record and this year we aren’t as bad as our record. While I agree with most of your thoughts Wildwood, I have to disagree on two. First of all, the scheduling wasn't the reason for our improved record. We've always played a bunch of cupcakes, but we used to lose a fair share of them. I also think that philosophy has changed. At this point we are trying to bring in better teams, it's just not easy as a team that has been in the dumps for 40 years. Second, I think the defense has been good. I would still like it to be better, especially for a coach who prides himself on his team's defense as you point out. If you look at pretty much any metric the Dukes' defense has been good since Dambrot arrived though . Even last night we held Davidson to 10 points below their season average, an average put up against pretty good competition too. Luckymcd, regarding the out of conference schedule; it has been considerably easier. I will list games in OOC, their Ken Prom year end rating and list rivalry games and top two opponents as well as OOC record. In Ferry’s last two years, he played Penn State (140) Pitt (37) Robert Morris (303) and Ga Tech (51) going 11-5 OOC and the following year Penn State (87) Pitt (79) Robert Morris (266) and Kentucky (4) going 7-7. In Dambrots first year Pitt (227) Robert Morris (266) San Fran (158) Lamar (203) going 9-5. The following year Penn State (43) Pitt (97) Notre Dame (101) going 9-5. And last year, no rivalry games and the two best teams were Marshall (143) who we lost to by 22 points and Radford (186) and going 10-2. You make the call Wildwood you raise some good points, especially about player retention. Now that being said I would argue the first 2 years of the recruiting cycle you are going to take more risks than normal to see if you can catch lighting in a bottle so to speak with a given recruiting risk/player. That however doesn't apply to the transfers that KD brought with him as he knew, or should have known, what he had there and you are right this is now his team 100%. I am a bit calmer now and am willing to see what happens the next couple of weeks. More practices and a Fordham game Saturday should help, even though they just beat the Flyers, and then the schedule gets tougher - we'll see. I would also say I have seen players get better, particularly Marcus and somewhat Kelly (pre-injury) and Hughes when he stays out of foul trouble. SC just hasn't been consistent enough and I think the verdict is still out on Maceo given the family tragedy last year coupled with the fact that we haven't played enough this year to make a fair assessment of Mace and the team overall if we are being honest. I agree with whoever said on the other thread today to just play Maceo at the 2 for a few games and let's see what he can do. TDM is better off the bench and I do still believe Murph should continue to get more minutes. So my proposition is let's see where we are by the end of the month and at that point if we haven't had any games cancelled and we've been able to practice consistently then we can make a fair and unemotional (LOL as I know I am a big offender of letting my emotions get the best of me) evaluation of where this team is. Pistol out!!! Wildwood - I agree the offense was a joke - players standing around taking ill-advised shots and the foul shooting was atrocious. But, they were tired and their legs were gone. I do think it improves with conditioning. Think back to the first GW game, where the ball movement was great and the foul shooting was pretty solid. In the second half of the second GW game they were starting to wear down and by the end of the Davidson game, they were on life support. Lose the legs and ball movement and foul shooting really suffer. I think they will be fine if they can only get back to a normal schedule and rhythm. It's been a rough time. Imagine how the Dayton fans must feel with early season losses to LaSalle and Fordham? You make the call Indiana St. was the best team we played ooc they were 105. I did overlook Indiana St, but they finished the year at 122. Hope you are on the mend Duq 81. Our Program
The next in line would be the head Coach Dambrot. There are several factors involving his evaluation. Let’s start with recruitment. He has brought in 20 players of which only six have stayed not including this years incoming class. That is an average of retaining 1 1/2 players a year. Either the coaching staff is having trouble evaluating what type of player can compete in the A-10 or they really don’t have a strong relationship with these players. Next we should look at player development. This is tricky because not many players have stayed here to be developed. None of the players that have stayed have had a transformation in their actual body make up. Player improvement on the floor has not occurred in any of the individuals that have been here for some time. Please if you disagree with me, name a player that has improved his game or body makeup. Lets move onto game day, preparation for a game, adjustments during a game and overall offensive and defensive schemes.
This year I think everyone would admit that the second game at GW we should of pressed them the whole game, because we had the longer bench by far, they lost their two best guards earlier in the season and it was back to back days that we were playing each other. We played them straight up and lost. I can go on to other seasons when we had no game plan but I will focus on this year because these are his players and this was to be the year. I have heard over the years that he is a defensive coach. I don’t see it, teams have always got wide open looks from the three point area and have gotten uncontested layups in half court sets. Our offense is a joke, no movement without the ball.no screens off of the ball, the only screens you see is at the top of the key while everyone else is standing around. I see many players taking threes that should not be taking them so early in the shot clock. I see a lot of ill advised forced shots. The teams free throw shooting the past two games is a joke, most of the commentators on the board at our age can shoot better than this team. I find this to be one of the most important and glaring weaknesses of this team. No enthusiasm or joy in the playing in a game, this is an extension of the coach. I give this coaching staff a C- at best. I really do not want to hear about covid, all teams and all of us are living through these difficult times. I know that I have been critical of this coach in the past and have been chastised for it. Yes he is better than Ferry and some of the other bums we have had over the past forty years. But none of the others have received a million dollars to coach at Duquesne. As long as we are strong and committed from the administrators, we have hope.

Re: Our Program
-I was really surprised by the small numbers of players who have stayed. Good post.
-As far as COVID, I don’t want to hear it as an excuse ONLY because as you said, everyone has to deal with this terrible - terrible virus.
Maybe the dukes have experienced more of it than the other teams, I don’t know and feel bad for everyone. I am fine with the season being canceled this year because of its devastation. But Coach needs to figure out what to do. Other teams have.... I don’t envy his position... I also don’t make one million dollars a year.
-I do think Hughes,Weathers, Sincere have gotten better since they have arrived though 2 of those guys have played poorly this year.
-I can’t imagine what Maceo has gone through and he is a great young man. But Coach needs to decide if he is going to play him more, or move on from playing him much. Other than the one good game...he has Not played to what was predicted since he has been here.
-I do NOT want to hear play for next year... that mantra should have passed. We have done that dance for 25 years.
-Figure it out coach... everyone has issues and you recruited these guys.
Go Dukes
-As far as the level of coaching, who else would come here that’s any good? We were fortunate he was upset with his situation at Akron.

Re: Our Program
As for the great Covid debate, every team has had to deal with isolation. Every team has had to deal with testing. Not every team missed a month of practice. It won't be a valid excuse all season long, but at this point I think it still is. We're 11 days out from having an extended layoff, that's not even halfway through a normal training camp.
We should be better than we have been, and Saturday will tell us a lot. We know what we have in the veterans, and the youngsters have been better than expected. I think we have the players in place. We just need to gel and get our legs back under us. Unfortunately at this point it pretty much is win the tournament or bust. I think we can.
