Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

Well the stats say rebounding will be very important. They have the 89th worst shooting percentage, we have the 59th best defensive shooting percentage. Unfortunately they have the 32nd best offensive rebound percentage and we allow the 59th worst defensive rebound percentage. We actually won the rebounding battle in the first game and held our own on the offensive glass though and still got blown out. So it probably comes down to just making shots.

Thinking with my heart I say the Dukes build on the momentum from the second half of URI and get a very important win. Thinking with my head I say they have dominated the rivalry in the last decade and they get another close win (4 of the last 8 games have been decided by one possession and 14 of 17 by 8 or less). Bonnies 63 Dukes 60. More than anything I say take the under. Both teams like a slow game and both teams play really good defense.

I agree with you on this.  Everything says the Bonnies should win a close one.  But things have been going too smoothly for them lately.  It's time for a tough loss for SBU so I'm liking the Dukes tonight.

Captain Obvious:  If they play well, they will win.  If they play poorly they will lose.  The important issue is I know they CAN win so let's see how they play.   Go Dukes!

Good point, VBC, on the Bonnies being a bit overconfident coming into this one. They just played their best half of the season on Wednesday in the 2nd half against VCU, outscoring them 45-14 in the second half. And 8 days ago, they had their way with the Dukes in a 14 point win (although it was just a 5 point game with 4 minutes to go).

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

Dukes win a close one. Something like 67-65. This if the defense holds up and we scrap and scrape for points.Looking for Marcus and Hughes to be at their collective best tonight.  Bonnies due for a let down. GO DUKES!!!

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

I expect KD to try & get SBU out of there comfort zone by playing quickly & trying to pressure the Bonnies into speeding things up a bit. They are eons ahead of the Dukes when it comes to execution, experience, & smarts. DU's chances of winning go up exponentially when scoring 70 points. That will be one of the goals.

The Dukes are also the deeper team. That is all the more reason to speed things up & attack the paint to create Bonnie foul trouble.

They will be all over Hughes, Baker, & Marcus. Okani, TDM, & Murphy will have to hit perimeter shots at an efficient percentage & score a combined 25 points or more.

Baker will definitely get a ton of attention from the refs & Bonnies alike. A-10 refs aren't afraid to saddle young players that draw attention to themselves with consistent foul trouble to "keep them in line". Chad already has at least 2 technicals & is prone to both positive & negative shows of emotion. He must understand the attention that creates, remain fiery but composed, & let the game come to him.

This is a very winnable game against a high quality opponent.

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

The only thing that scares me about this one like many is the refereeing. Just watched the LaSalle-Richmond game. The officiating was a joke. Certain coaches and teams get the calls. Nothing anybody on this board doesn't know already. Schmidt starts Complaining from the get go about phantom missed calls etc... he usually gets them. That's his modus operandi. Think if Hughes doesn't get called for breathing on someone early Dukes win by 6.

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

Even his assistant coach players Complain about EVERY call. See it already. Not sure who fouled Lofton on that drive. Didn't see it.

You can't see a more obvious offensive goal-tend than that. Right above the rim.

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

Some obersvations from this game:

1.  These refs were beyond awful.  An embarrasment.
2.  Benz and especially Ellis are the two worst play by play guys I have ever heard.  They should never call another game.  Terrible.
3.  Good defensive effort and overall effort by the Dukes.

Tough game but they fought hard. I hope this doesn’t set them back mentally. That’s my concern.

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

Much impressed with Bonnie’s offensive sets. Ball movement. Back door layups. Reminded me of KC football offense vs. Randy Fichner Steeler offense. The Dukes Freshman stand on the parameter no movement. Horrible. Not on Dambrots staff because they just came out of HS. Bonnie’s all JR,s next year top 20. Dukes played well but Schmidt got it going up in Western NY. Sincere  killed this season as well as screwed his teammates. Go Dukes

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

I give Mark Schmidt lots of credit. Don't know how he gets the players up there but he does.  Really coaches them up. Game was winnable but shots weren't falling. And yes with SC at the point we likely put this one in the win column. Do need Maceo back in the lineup soon!  Dukes will battle in every game.

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

I'm usually not one to say "that play was the difference" but with about 2:00 to go, only down three, TDM threw up a rushed, poorly executed three ball early in the shot clock. That was not the spot for that kind of heave.

Only down three, take your time.

Re: Game Thread - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (H)

The Dukes went into two droughts, one in each half. It happened each time that they substituted from the starters. This second group didn’t try to get the ball inside and shot way too many threes. 4-6 minutes in each half without scoring just killed the Dukes. Bona is very disciplined in their offensive sets and really play tough D. When Maceo returns, I would like to see him get Murphy’s minutes. Maceo understands the game far better and will provide some stability. I really like Okani and Baker. They should continue to get at least 25 minutes per game. Good players who need time to become dependable game in and game out.

Totally agree. A 3 pointer is an option when all else fails on this team IMO. Have to go inside or look for a higher percentage shot first. Unless you have a knock down 3 point shooter which is totally absent here.
