Re: Luthers visiting today

The Luther twins would be a great pick up for the Dukes if JF can land them.  Reminds me of what landing those other great set of local b-ball twins meant for the program all those many years ago.  Go Dukes.

Re: Luthers visiting today

With the Luthers, Minnie and Skovranko there seems to be a little more D1 players in the WPIAL this year.

"We're not a package deal," Collin said.

But ...

"There's a chance we might go together if we both like the same school," Ryan said.

Ryan Luther is a 6-foot-8 guard-forward while Collin is a 6-7 guard-forward. They are among a handful of players from the WPIAL senior class who are being recruited by Division I colleges. If the Luthers end up at the same school, their destination will be Duquesne or George Washington. Among the Luthers' finalists, those are the only two schools that have offered scholarships to both.

Re: Luthers visiting today

Be nice to have Barry & Garry on hand to meet them, if they are available.

Except for the major icons (Cooper, Green, Ricketts, Nixon, Somerset), probably no name brings better top of mind recall than "the Nelson twins" when talking about Duquesne basketball.

Agree with this. Even though Durham, Zopf, and Davis were better players, they were the face of those teams.

Re: Luthers visiting today

duq81, that's based on one thing: When I tell someone our age or older that I went to Duquesne, and I'm not kidding about this, 9 of 10 who know anything about college basketball bring up the Nelsons.

Re: Luthers visiting today

I believe it. When I think of those teams, they are who I think of first as well. Those teams were famous (infamous to Nova and LaSalle fans) for their physical play, and the Nelsons were the personification of that.

Re: Luthers visiting today

Pit hosted a number of players this weekend and received a commitment from 6'8" Sheldon Jeter.  They are also expected to get a commitment from Josh Martin.  If Martin commits I think this would bolster our chance for Ryan.

@MattSteinbrink: Sounds like things are going very well with Josh Martin and Sheldon Jeter. I expect both to end up committing.

@JoshMartin_206: Got my mind made up.

Josh Martin, Bothell HS (Bothell, WA)- The 6'7" 220 power forward must be a pretty good fit for Pitt if Dixon is willing to go all the way out to Washington to get him. Martin is just that thanks to his great build and explosive athleticism. Throw in the fact that he has range out to the three point arc and is an excellent passer and he has everything Pitt loves in a power forward. A 2014 prospect.

Re: Luthers visiting today

By offering the local guys, Pitt put some pressure on their other prospects, and it appers that it has caused some movement.

Josh Martin committed to Minnesota.  Does this still leave the door open for Ryan Luther at Pitt or does Jeter's commitment mean Pitt has filled that spot?  More importantly does it eliminate Pitt for Ryan?  Pitt already has Young and Artis at his position.  I guess we should know soon.

Re: Luthers visiting today

To paraphrase my post on the WEWEARTHERING board, all any ardent Dukes fan needs to know about the Luther twins is contained in Steve Nesbitt's blog in the Post Gazette.  Steve seemingly quotes the twins verbatim about their recruitment and the schools and staffs involved. Both kids had nothing but good things to say about Duquesne and the Men's basketball staff and especially Jim Ferry.  I don't need to know anything else about their priorities.  They articulated their thoughts and feelings quite well and there is no doubt in my mind they will make college choice(s) decision(s) that are best for themselves.  That is all any parent, relative, friend, fan or foe can or should ask for.

Re: Luthers visiting today

Nesbitt did a great job in his article.  I am just providing some recruiting information here that some people may find interesting Grammy.

Re: Luthers visiting today

I am in total agreement with what you have been doing CLK.  And I might say you do it quite well!  My point was and is that Duquesne fans should not lose sight of the fact that all recruiting sources note that both Luther kids are being recruited.  Either kid or both going to Duquesne is a major plus.

Re: Luthers visiting today

I'm rooting for Jimmy Ferry on this one. Hard. Real hard. Every now and then someone comes along who can really be the face of a program. It doesn't get any better than two local kids who inspire national attention and recruiting. The way Jon Severe was a great "get" for Fordham, the Luther brothers would be back-to-back (and belly-to-belly) home runs for Duquesne.

PS on Steve Nesbitt - doing a great job. Paul Zeise did a nice job last year but Nesbitt has up-notched it for us. Being a remote alumni, it's greatly appreciated.

A younger guy, looking to move up, just like our coach. That's what I like.

Re: Luthers visiting today

From a Rivals article today on Ryan's visit to Pitt.

"I just need to find the best fit for me," he said. "As far as Sheldon goes, I don't know him personally but I did play against him once. Him committing to Pitt doesn't change anything at all."

"I am getting close to a decision; I'm just not sure when yet," Luther said. "I definitely want to make my decision before my season starts. That is the only think I know for sure at this time."
