A10 Preseason Prognostications

Please drop any A10 preseason rankings or predictions into this pinned thread.

Here's one from Blue Ribbon through the Richmond Spiders website,  This publication has the Dukes finishing 9th in the conference; the full Blue Ribbon article is behind a paywall.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

At this point, 9th seems on the low-end of fair. Based on what is known to "experts" & journalists about this year's Dukes, 6th would be too high. 7th seems right. By the end of the season, I predict 4th.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

I believe the Dukes will finish in the top four.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

I will go top four as well.  However this year - given all the comings and goings on nearly every team- it is really tough to predict.  Just the other day, George Mason signed a blue chipper.  Every team save Richmond is really going to look a bit different than what we are used to.  But I do love our chances with Dambrot and what look to be a number of strong newcomers.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

1. St Bonaventure (all five starters back) 2. Richmond (4 of 5 starters back but Sherod a former starter back makes 5 starters back)  3. 4. 5. VCU, Dayton and Rhode Island no particular order. 6-13 anybody’s guess 14. Fordham. I feel this is an important year for us, as we are basically starting over in year 5. The anybody’s guess at 6-13 could possibly crack the 3-5 spots with a few breaks here and there. We really need to be one of those teams or at least the top end of 6-13. It is going to be a very interesting season. Good luck and hoping for the best.

I actually looked to try to confirm it was for this year, obviously didn't look hard enough.  I'll say a solid 6th this year because a little bit young, but as long as there's not a mass exodus then top 3 next year.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

The elusive Mysterio says I'm crazy, but I'm going with a top 4 finish as well.

My hope is that the Dukes will be placed in Pittsburgh for the NCAA tournament so that Mysterio and I don't have to sell our seats at PPG Arena and travel somewhere to see our Dukes.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

We all know that we hope these guys are wrong.  We also can find examples of when they have been wrong. With that said, they are often “in the ball park” of their information/suggestions.  If these “predictions” are...in the ball park I am going to be pissed…not at them…but the idea of we still haven’t gotten to the NCAA or NIT in a very, very, very, long time.  And will that mean “same old Dukes?”   I hope not.  Go Dukes.

This one seems pretty pessimistic. The non-conference schedule is a better one than we have seen over the last decade-plus but, there just has to be 8ish wins in there.

Also, the overall record is listed as 12-17. Aren't the Dukes confirmed to be playing 31 games?

I got my four seats to check a bucket list item off my list.  March Madness occurs during my Spring Break. Will see you at the games.

phil95, the KenPom schedule for the Dukes does not include the final 2 games of the Paradise Jam since the opponents are not known. I agree that this ranking is pretty pessimistic, but due to the lack of returning players, it’s very difficult to statistically slot the Dukes.

That being said, I believe that you can earn some early money betting on the Dukes if you feel they are undervalued, which I do. As you have historically seen, the betting line should closely track the KenPom prediction. For the home opener vs. Rider, KenPom has the Dukes as a 6 point favorite. I would see the Dukes as a 14 point favorite (if I slot them from #181 down to #100, which I believe would be a fair ranking based on the perceived talent). So unless something (what I see Thursday or reports out of the secret scrimmages) changes, I anticipate laying a healthy sum of money on the Dukes for Game 1.

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

Here are the Pomeroy rankings for OOC games. That is a tough schedule for a young team, but a lot of opportunities for "good wins."

Rider 234
Hofstra 168
Weber 114
Northeastern 158
Colorado 35 or S. Ill 134
3rd game Paradise Jam
American  270
Bowling Green 139
Marshall 111
DePaul 140
N Hampshire 225
UC Irvine 112
Wofford 126

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

I wouldn't call this a "young team", perhaps a team without a history together; but with the exception of three freshmen, who will probably not be in the starting 5, the team has a good bit of college basketball experience.  I believe that was one of the advantages that the coaches were seeking by going heavily with transfers.  They are  game-ready players who have been through the college basketball wars.

No the Dukes will not be this bad.  The bottom line is the sports writers, including the local guys, who have a vote have no clue about the Dukes.  Finkelstein even admitted that this morning saying the Dukes are a complete mystery. I can't wait for the Dukes to open a can of "whoop ass" on this League!  It is going to be shock and awe!

Re: A10 Preseason Prognostications

According to a mbb magazine I was reading
recruiting  ratings don't factor in transfers. This was in reference to Kentucky's incoming
recruits which was the lowest rated since Calipari was coach. One of the transfers is Grady
from Davidson. So much regarding evaluation of incoming players.
No one really knows about the Dukes until the season starts.
