I'm convinced the vast majority of portal players are ushered there by the coaching staff instead of leaving for greener pastures. The college game is becoming a clear example of basketball Darwinism. Get recruited and it's survival of the fittest. You have a bad couple of months your freshman year you may find yourself out of a scholarship. The coaches can replace you 5 times over with the portal. I think the fan has to adapt their expectations for what the game is now. "rebuild" and "retool" may be outdated terms. A new word needs to arise that doesn't have the connotations of those others. The deck gets reshuffled every April and a new hand is dealt. I wonder who the next great coach will be? It will have to be someone who knows how to turn over a roster and coach a system that is easy to grasp. I can learn to love the new way - I just need to expect that my team will be different every year.

Do believe that you are spot on with this. I can't even imagine too many players playing at the same school for even 3 seasons let alone 4 the way it's going. Not the game we grew up with but I will adapt and hope that we will be successful with the "new normal."

Don't call it college sports... For those who missed it, here is a link to the OPED from Mitch Daniels (former governor of Indiana and president of Purdue) that has attracted a lot of discussion.
