Marketing of the Dukes

Duquesne has a marketing department in the business school and a communication department in the liberal arts program. The athletic department should ask the head of these departments to do to projects to assist them in marketing the Dukes. The present state of marketing the Dukes is beyond pathetic. These two departments could not do any worse than the staff presently marketing the Dukes. These tweets on twitter are nice, but it seems like they rush through it. Plus they should do all the players and splash them on all the social media outlets. They also should have a meet and greet the players, then scrimmage, have three point shooting and dunk contest. Invite anyone that wants to come, students, alumni, youth groups and youth and high school basketball teams. It almost seems like they have given up on the program compared to what they did when Dambrot first came in. What I am afraid of, is that maybe they are preparing to drop the program down to a lower conference or even maybe drop to division 2. Maybe, they figured we tried hiring a coach at million a year and renovating the gym and now is the time to stop throwing money down a rat hole and cut their losses.

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

Wildwood:  Agree with the ideas you mentioned above --  Would like to share the following with you --  regards the ladies team -  in the past BOTH teams were part of the off season "Meet & Greet -- This year Both teams have numerous new players the fans may be curious about.

In the Post Gazette there is a section which lists up coming games off all the sports teams in Pittsburgh -  The Women's Game against Point Park is NOT listed --  BUT THE ROBERT MORRIS WOMANS GAME AGAINST ST FRANCIS IS INCLUDED AMONG OTHERS.

While the Women's games DO generally appear there will probably be one or two instances when they get the date correct but the site wrong   (a home game might be listed as being away or vice versa)  One would THINK --  SOMEONE in the Athletic/Ticket Department MIGHT check that (or at least check to see if the Men's BB is listed AND Notice the Women were not -   In general I think a PRIME Source for outsiders as to WHEN a team might be competing is a source like this --  To NOT have the information out there (or incorrect information out there)  IS disappointing -- to use a MILD TERM

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

I have lurked on the account for many years.   Posted once or twice under another name.   Wildwood suggestions of the business and communications school are good ideas.   But it will never happen.   Just like the music school refuses to be involved with a pep band.   And there will not be a pep band again according to what I hear.   Sad.

Of course, the University President could say get involved.   But does not.   And frankly their jobs are not to prop up athletics.

I know I am going to jumped on for this but this rests solely at the office of VP of Athletics, Dave Harper.
Here are just some of the filled positions in the Athletic Department under Mr. Harper that relate to athletics and basketball

Associate Athletic Director / External Relations
Associate Athletic Director / Media Relations (MBB, MSOC, BOWL)
Assistant Director of Media Relations (WBB, VB, WSOC, TEN)

Assistant Director, Creative Media & Productions
and

Directors of  Marketing & Fan Engagement
Director, Production and Engineering

and I am leaving out all the other assistant Athletic Directors.  Compare that to RMU that does a far better job with a staff of 3 similar positions.  Please tell me what 2 Directors of Marketing and Fan Engagement do all day.

I know that I will get pushback from the Harper apologists but this all is his shoulders.    A failure plain and simple.    It took a CLK post to get them to start posting the "Getting to Know You" videos of the new Dukes after the first profile.  Absolutely nothing has been done to promote the women's team.   Not one feature on new players.   Fan base is absolutely dwindling to lower than Nee years.

Just a moribund group of people with no accountability.   Lead by Harper.    There is really is no answer besides the people that are hired to do these jobs to actually do them.

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

I thought when Gormley was hired and then Dambrot came on board, sudddenly there was some excitement
with Duquesne athletics. The talk about spending money on Dambrots salary and Harpers ability to raise funds for the refurbished Cooper Fieldhouse and the indoor practice football facility.
What happened to alll this excitement? 6 years ago the Duquesne womens basketball was in a pretty healthy state and now it looks like the prospects  for future success greatly diminished, its not been given any atttention and  Burt was looking like the next Johnnny Wooden. What the heck happened as the athletic dept seems to be going through the motions and we know nothing  about the mens ,womens basketball team. Its just incompetent and no leadership by Harper ,no accountability.

It is much more than just winning. Granted, fans would start showing up if they win games. But, no way would they maximize attendance with the way they are handling matters at the present effort or lack of effort by the athletic administration.

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

Maybe the lack of effort exists cause they know no one cares about a loser.  Some alumni and a few students is all to expect when you havent done anything in 40+ years.   You cant sale something to someone that doesnt exist.

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

I don't claim to have any insight as to the job descriptions of the Athletic Dept. Management; but that is quite an array of positions with seemingly minimal results.  I think we can all be realistic about Duquesne's position in the world of college athletics; but if sports are an afterthought; then why spend money on these administrative positions?

Perhaps we need the all these associate directors etc. for hosting the NCAA Tournament games every few years?  It seems that Harper has fallen into the same habits as his predecessor.  Host the Tournament while giving little attention to the daily rigors of actually building and promoting winning sports programs at Duquesne. The only time he seems to speak publicly is to promote the hosting of an NCAA event.

And let's not forget the holdovers from previous regimes like Dave "milk bucket under a bull" Saba, who has been in the same position, which I believe involves marketing, and has done nothing for about a quarter century.

Harper's biggest mistake was not getting rid of the deadwood on Day 1!

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

What I can't figure out, is I believe that Harper has improved Duquesne Athletics since he has been here...significantly.  EXCEPT when IT COMES TO MARKETING.

I agree with EVERY POST HERE.... and let me add some things...
-Season Tix still don't come out in a timely manner
-Parking tickets came out after the games began last year and this year they need to be picked up at WILL CALL at the first game
-The fact that they couldn't get the place sold out for the first game last year is on Harper and the whole department
-Now this is on DAMBROT this year because of his losing season that season tickets are down
-I stopped listening to the FAN(93.7) because if you clock it, and I did, in the morning for every half hour time-slot, there is a MINIMUM OF 20 MINUTES OF COMMERCIALS!  In the past I just switched to WDVE or ESPN...sorry, got side tracked - 93.7 would have the bball games for the night and often either the game or the results of the game would not mention Duquesne - that's on Duquesne!
-Lack of halftime activity for the kids

-I don't know if Harper won't do anything because of...
a). Those are his friends and he can't have a difficult conversation with them
b). He doesn't know what to do
c) He doesn't care
It has to be one of those, doesn't it???

And one more thing, along with my emails and correspondence, I know of others who have contacted Harper and other AD employees on the loudness of the music (during timeouts, halftime, etc.)  to the fact you can't hear the person next to you.  I will be surprised, if they actually did anything about it and would love to be incorrect on this one.

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

I think it would be hard to market a team that has a 17 game losing streak
and finished the season 6-24. The recruits are good but no 4 or 5 stars.
Harper is a VP and part of Gromley's senior staff. He has to consider what Gromley
wants and how the athletic department fits into Gromleys vision.
A new medical school, 50 mil to the law school and a 333 mil fund raiser probably are the priorities for
Gromley and not the MBB team.

Re: Marketing of the Dukes

Just because they had an awful year last season, does not mean you just give up marketing the team. Don’t these people have jobs to do? Should loyal season ticket holders be treated the way they are being treated? To defend the administration for their lack of effort and not crossing their T’s and dotting their I’s  because the team didn’t perform is a pretty ridiculous stance. If one part of your company is failing, does that mean the other department don’t have to perform to the best of their abilities,
