Recruiting, Early Signing period and Transfer Portal

The early signing period has come and gone.  We have not signed anyone or is there even any sniffs at being involved with many HS or prep players at this time.  Is that a good thing or bad thing?
As we all know the transfer portal and NIL has changed the landscape of college basketball now where anyone can pretty much up and leave a school without having to sit out a year.  The one time transfer rule about this doesn’t seem to be enforced anyway.  Take for example our Joe Reece or our 2 time transfer Leon Ayers.  So if you’re a HS senior unless you’re a 4 or 5 star you probably will have to go to a prep school.  Maybe the 3 star guys still have a small chance of getting a scholarship. The mid major programs like ourselves lose the better under the radar players to High Majors once they find out they are great players at our level.  Mid majors are almost like the minor league setups for them.  Conversely the High Major players who don’t pan out for their schools look to transfer down to Mid Major because of playing time.
So for Duquesne Dambrot is probably waiting for the stones to fall on this group of players to get a feel for who may be leaving.  We already have two HS players probably sitting out now in Barre and Carney. We are probably going to play the transfer portal again with the majority of our open scholarships for next year.  These guys come in battle tested and provide experience and leadership that freshmen don’t usually have anyway.  I am not saying if the right HS Senior or Prep players comes along you don’t take them but the portal seems to be the best option. We will have at least 4 open to give so why not get the best available option.
I know this is how the crazy recruiting world has evolved so if you don’t adapt quickly your sunk. I would like to hear what others have to say on his one?
Go Dukes!

Re: Recruiting, Early Signing period and Transfer Portal

Motor we have some real talent hopefully all returning next season in Williams, Grant, McGriff, Easley, Clark, Hronsky, Dixon, and Rozier, and all will have big roles.  In addition, as you mentioned, we will have Barre and Carney both of whom will contribute, although I am not sure that Barre has officially been designated a red shirt.  Last week Dambrot said he was looking to get him healthy and in the rotation.  We will be losing some experience players in Brewer, Rotroff, Gunn, and Reece.  I think KD will be using the portal to pick up key pieces for next season and prep school for diamonds in the ruff.  Plus, I believe our recruiting stock will be high in the spring.

Probably a good idea to try and keep a couple of scholarships in your back pocket as long as possible.
