Ron had 2 years left on his deal. He recieved a well deserved full extension after the NIT year. He needed to have another year added to his deal, as you can never allow a coach to go into his final year. Two years with the new class would have been fair. If there wasn't clear progress towards our ultimate goal after 8 years on the job, you pay off his last year, and move on, and there would not have been many people questioning the decision.

'81 - although I am an RE guy, what you proposed above is all that I would ask. And I believe you're right when when you said there would not be many questioning the decision to fire Ron if there wasn't clear progress after 8 years - myself included. In fact, I think Ron would have agreed or maybe have tried to find a graceful way out before he got fired.

Since GA is the guy who brought RE here, he should have been willing to go down with the ship, unless RE was fired for misbehavior of some sort. Had GA come in halfway through Ron's tenure, I might be willing to give his actions more leeway. That said, eight years would have been a fair amount of time for a guy who had some success. Eventually though, you have to get it done. Even success at the level that Phil Martelli achieved at St. Joe's won't be enough, if you don't maintain it, as the lynch mob that is forming in Philly attests.

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

I am not sure whether I will be attending more games and am thinking, maybe that is the only way that the AD and coach understand the sense of urgency...or how pathetic everyone knows they are.  It used to be that only the students didn't go to games.  Now, if we stop going and they are playing in front of 600 fans again (i.e. Danny Nee) they maybe they will get it.

My starting 4:  White, Soko, Watkins, Jerry Jones, and not sure of the 5th.

This is more than when RE was fired I think!  DId we just set a new record!!!
Maybe one of the powers that be on  this board should print these with the information and send it to the President, Men's Coach, and AD

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

I actually think Ridenour has shown a very unselfish skillset when he is on the floor.  His problem is that his handle doesn't appear strong enough to play the point.  I'd definitely make him my starting PG regardless.

Ridenour
Mason (when he returns)
Jones (Jerry)
Watkins
Soko

6th man - Mckoy.

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

Colter.  Still the best option IMHO.
Mason.
Jeremiah.  We'll need his strength come A-10 time.  Likely the team's best defender IMO also.
McKoy.  I think he's been our best player the last two games.
Soko.  Hard to see the most talented sitting.

Off the bench...
PG - Ridenour.
2/3:  Jerry then White
4:  Jerry
5:  Watkins/Lewis situationally

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

VBC, I think you are right on the money. It's Ferry's job to have this team ready to play. Period. He's unequal about discipline. Colter can go off half-cocked, and nothing happens. McKoy gives Watkins the ball in a bad place, Watkins turns it over, never gets in the game again.

rogabee, I agree about McKoy. He reminds me of one of my favorite all-time NBA players, Charles Oakley. The Oak man drashed boards, dove after loose balls, did all of the little things you needed to win. Too bad we don't have a Starks, Mason, Houston and Ewing to put around him!

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

Simms, agree with you 100% as to DR, but I'd start Colter with a short leash and my other 4 would be:
Ovie
Mason
DoMo
Jerry J - Jeramiah just hasn't shown me enough, but whoever is playing better gets the minutes

Off the bench:
DR
Watkins (at the 4 or 5)
TWhite
Gill
It is a shame D. Lewis couldn't have redshirted, I think that would have helped him immensely, he is just not ready yet.

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

Colter doesn't seem to get it. I think he's taken the first shot of every game, or at least it seems that way. I'd love to see some ball movement once in a while.

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

Colter is averaging 8.5 shots a game. He's shooting .426 from the field, and .385 from 3. The three point percentage is acceptable. He probably should be taking about 7 shots a game. The real problem though, is Ovie Soko. .393 from the field is totally unacceptable for a 6'8" player. McKoy is shooting a fantastic .711 from the floor. Indy Jones is shooting .46 from the floor, which is acceptable for a swing man. Ridenhour is shooting a pathetic .317. He's got to do better than that if he's going to start.

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

When Colter (or any player) is hitting his shots, I'm certainly in favor of him taking shots. The issue is when he gets to 1-5, 1-6 and keeps going. He also seems to take his worst shots at the worst time. He only took 7-8 shots Saturday, but he had taken 3 already when we were in a 15-5 hole. I think a point guard has to be making your offense work. His assist average is also way down this year.

Soko, for his size, strength, and leaping ability, seems timid around the basket. I think he should take it much stronger to the rim and look to finish with dunks.

Don't know if you saw my analogy for McKoy... he reminds me of Charles Oakley.

Agree with this. Colter should look to get his teammates going early. If he does that, he will actually get easier shot for himself later in the game. Soko needs to be up around 50% from the floor. 40% is not going to get it done. I was surprised at Indy Jones fg %. Maybe he needs to look to shoot a bit more.
I saw the Oakley comparison. McKoy has impressed me as well. Maybe we need to get him more touches.

Re: #3 in the city of Pittsburgh

I think the NBA player was Charles Barkley, not Oakley.

Oakley played for the Knicks. He was not a great player, but was guy who did a lot of little things well.

Bingo duq81. But he was a very good player who knew what his role was on the team.

I love "grit and glue" guys like Oakley. Deep down, everyone wants to be Jordan, Magic, or Bird (or something similar), but you have to love guys who accept that they aren't that, and embrace what they truly are.
