Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

https://triblive.com/sports/ncaa-votes-to-accept-2-8-billion-settlement-that-could-usher-in-dramatic-change-for-college-sports/

"In the new compensation model, each school will be permitted — but not required to — set aside up to $21 million in revenue to share with athletes per year, though as revenues rise so could the cap."

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

The imbalance will eventually topple the whole thing down, so the sooner the better. I hope I live long enough to see the rebuild.

This is an enlightening article that points out the impact on mid-major conferences. Many quotes from Bernadette McGlade regarding A10 issues and impacts.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Inevitable ...Call it a .... "Curt Flood"  Effect...
Once money is involved you have to treat these people like a professionals, like.(Pros)... You have to pay Professionals...it was inevitable.....We will just have to make the adjustments and compete.....Simple
Good thing that we got a Billionaire, like Labron James.... on our side. !!!!

Go Dukes !!!

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

I deleted a long version of this. Power 5 teams right now,  get all the 4 and 5 star players with out paying them. But now after paying them to come, nothing changes. Mid-major schools before and after money, never competes for 4 and 5 star players. Likely nothing changes, except Power 5 schools have to raise their tuition to get back that 21 million each year to pay these kids, and the government will pay off those ever increasing school loans. DU is in the same boat either way.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

A friend sent me this PG Article on how the House Law Suit Settlement could affect small schools like Duquesne and RMU. Not a good outlook.

Good article. Very complicate issue for sure. It's hard to see how this pay to play works out in the years to come.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Duquesne and all the other members of the 17 non power conferences who are losing money already
should form another alliance and leave the NCAA . Duquesne does not have the money to waste being involved with Power schools like Ohio State and  paying players 20 million dollars to play.
Duquesne has no business in professional sports  and paying players, the mission of the University should be to educate.A athletic scholarship and a reasonable stipend for economically disadvantaged athletes is all Duquesne  should be doing.
When the big boys have their March Madness without the small schools interest will drop and kill viewership. The small schools make March Madness what it is.
Tuition to go to Duquesne is ridiculous already, hate to see any more financial burden placed on small private schools and having sports programs cut to benefit the rich and powerful schools.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Duquesne has no chance of winning a NCAA Division 1 national championship in any sport. The Dukes lack
facilities and a large alumni fanbase to fund this nonsense.

I think I would modify this to any "revenue" sport, since revenue is the deciding factor in being able to compete or even participate.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Duquesne has only 1 revenue sport-mens basketball.Duquesne had a wonderful season in mens basketball
but its highly doubtful when paying the head coach 1 million dollars that they made a profit,so its really a
non-revenue sport

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

That $21 million cap won’t last long once they start trying to dole out the money to around 85 “scholarship” football players on a P-5 roster! How much will be left for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, etc.?
Title 9 was mentioned only briefly in the Trib article, but I don’t see how they can ignore splitting the money with women’s sports?  How can the counter-balance the payments to those 85-football players with equal payments to female athletes?  I don’t see how the $21-million ends up providing huge payouts to individual athletes with so many players to pay.  So, this NIL will most likely still be used for the huge sums going to the top 5-star players.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Ohio State football has already surpassed the 21 million cap. They got 5 quarterbacks earning probably earning a combined total of 2 to 3 million dollars.Nothing more delightful to see Ohio State squirm a little bit.
So enjoyable to watch Michigan beat OSU and the aftermath of whining from Buckeye nation.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

The NCAA should right now from the start establish a minimum wage for every scholarship athlete mens and women right down to chess players. Then have an over-all cap on what any collage can spend, so what ever is left is spent both meager and wisely. Then right there it's all fair. But, you know the NCAA are spineless fools and will let this go crazy first, and then, they will try but can't  reel this thing in before it's out of control. They should! But they are spineless.

It's all about the money... The NCAA has lost control of it... They bled the hell out of the athletic talents, of thousands of college athletes for 50 years and NOW, it's time to pay the piper...finally... As harsh as it sounds, we should allow the market forces to take the lead here..,let the process play out.. let." Laissez faire Capitalism"  take it's eventual course .. I think in the long run, that these Power 5 schools are going to bear more of the financial burden than the mid-majors, like us will have to...

As I stated before, just treat these college players, as professionals from the get go...and everything will take care of itself...to quote a timely source  as,  "Bill Walton"....speaking to a young Eli Wilborn...

“‘Have your fun but also realize you’re getting paid to come here,’” Walton told Wilborn and the St. Francis (PA) men’s basketball team. “‘You’re actually here to do a real job.’”

Rather prophetic,  don't you think ?!!!

GO Dukes !!!

Wow. This is a tremendously aggravating article. "We don't have a say in it. We're stuck. They can just do it," Big Sky commissioner Tom Wistricill told CBS Sports. "It's devastation without representation.", WCC commissioner Stu Jackson- "It's analogous to being in a boat in the open ocean on a fairly clear day, and then all of the sudden just getting hit by one of the worst storms possible. That's what it felt like," Mcglade said "Do we have to reduce our scholarship funding in other sports to stay competitive in basketball? Every school is going to have to look in the mirror and make that decision,"

Don’t confuse the NCAA settlement limit of $21-million per school with the existing NIL deals.  NIL deals are still in play, and can go into the millions for each player.  The NCAA agreement is small change when broken down per player compared to what the NIL can pay them.

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Remember back when paying college players was supposed to be about them being able to pay to get pizza and go on a date?

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Nothing NEW ...or to SEE here...
Hmmm.... Seem to distinctly remember Norm's JAG his senior year....It was parked in the (front-row-right -corner) of the then ...Towers Parking Lot ...You had to be blind not see it...

Speaking of... IMHO...the "Great" Bill Walton.....Bill  Walton had an actual "Bagman" at UCLA named San Glibert...He kept Bill Walton (well) compensated with alotta  $$$$

Who are we kidding ...We have always had  " PAY to PLAY" !!!!

The only thing that has changed is the Dollar amount...$$$$

GO Dukes !!!

Re: Prepare for more imbalance, I guess...

Mid-Major leagues should sue the NCAA and the Power 5 leagues for anti-trust monopolies and unfai trade practices,  and make them pay up proportion to the size difference and State backed schools have unfair competition advantages on tax payers money? Since college players are now paid professionals and Power 5 programs have all along made large profits for years off the system  they should be viewed as monopolies and made to pay up.
