On the bright side, (if any) Barre can play and seems to be effective.

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

What a disaster. Listening on radio and watching game cast. Choke the game away and Dinkins throws up all over himself at the end. Glad I didn’t pay the 15 bucks to watch. Sucks the season is all but over at this point.

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

At this point, can they even beat Cleary?   Could we go winless?   GW clobbered Hampton.
Gonna be a long winter with no hoops to care about.

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

Maybe Coach Dambrot is free for about 7 days for practice. Coach Joyce is over his head. The momentum from last years team is dead. They lose to freaking Hampton. What’s next Dukes go 0-3. Thank God I didn’t go to the Cayman Islands to watch this mess

Hate to say that we collectively overvalued our incoming class, but I harken back to this post....

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

Very simply, guys like Corbett who  cannot shoot Free throws cannot be on the court. Unless your name is Shaq, you cannot play at this level.

If someone made a “deal with the devil” to allow us to get to the NCAA Tournament last year; he is collecting his debt with vengeance!

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

There have been some really bad coaching hires in the past in which the coach knew nothing about teaching team concepts at the college level.  But this coach appears to be even more over his head than guys like Porter and Edgar. The offense is worse than atrocious.
To be shooting 58 percent from the line for the season??? There are junior high teams who do better than that. To be 40 percent from the field and 28 percent from the 3, that's really, really bad as well.

These are things that can be improved on. Reps, daily, until muscle memory is well established. Bad shooting mechanics need to be coached out of a few kids here. Every team we faced, shoots with good mechanics. Our team , except a couple of players, need lots of work to correct.

At this point, it sure does seems that way. Anything is possible, but right now I have not felt so bad about a Duquesne team since Darell Porter. There is no visible signs of coaching to me. Yes the coaches don't shoot free throws.but that is not the only or biggest problem. The second half collapses seem to be ingrained in this team. Up 8 late today and the Dukes finish like the Keystone Cops. Guys look completely lost on both sides of the ball. If there are any set plays they are not recognizable. Just very disappointing. I hope Dru can turn it around but from what we have witnessed I am losing hope.

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

Jake and Dinkins need to run this offense. 35 minutes each, not Rozier.  Both of these kids are explosive and can do way more if the offensive game is centered around them. Not just shooting, but with assist, since they collapse defenses on them then pass to open players. This is one more game that our defense did enough to win, But without a vast improvement on fast aggressive offense, it's going to be an ugly season.  Correct some of these and this season should turn around. But, keep doing what is not working isn't going to help.

We beat the press a lot in the late play, but didn't pass up court and go to the hoop with numbers. Standing around passing back and forth instead of passing up court just plays into our opponent plan.

If the Dukes lost to Hampton, would they lose to Shaler too?

This coach is not over his head. He let the kids do things to this point, and I am sure he is going to go to who is and who isn't.  Give him some slack. It's his first year and non-conf. doesn't mean anything, unless he can't adjust. I'm behind Dru. He lives this stuff. In Dec., the  schedule is more  made to work things out. There is too much talent on this team and a very good coach here not to see us making noice it the A-10..

Still 16 turnovers is unacceptable.  Combined with poor FT shooting and you lose the game.  I agree that the best way to make them take off the press is to beat it for layups or ope 3’s!  That usually ends their press.

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

Dukes will play Old Dominion tomorrow.at 11am Eastern.  Dukes should be favored by 5 or 6 in this one.  The Dukes are playing one of a handful of teams that have a worse FT shooting percentage then they do.  Talk about a must win.

levon75, you are correct.  The FT shooting has certainly been abysmal.  For the season, the Dukes have been average in turnover % (154th in the country); what is maddening is that they are #318 in non-steal turnover percentage.  The Dukes are just throwing the ball away; teams are not pressuring them defensively because they don't respect the Dukes 3 point shooting.

I'm going to give Dru some slack as well. They are 0 and 6, but outside the Depaul game they could have won 3 or 4 of those games. Think the worst is behind them and could see them winning 5 or 6 of the next seven games before league play. Every player on this team has probably played some of the worst ball of their college careers, so I'm hoping Dru can figure out the right combination of players on the court at the same time. Would love to see Dixon, Barre, Necas, Dimichelle, and Dinkins on the court at the same time. Is Alex Williams ever coming back? He was the Dukes best transfer portal pickup. Wilborn, Hronsky, Edwards, and to a lesser extent Rozier off the bench, until those guys step it up. As for Corbett, I don't know, he seems lost and whines way too much.

Overlooked today, but Chabi Barre had a great game - 19 minutes, 8 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks and only 1 turnover.

Re: Game Thread - Hampton Pirates (Cayman Islands Classic)

Incredibly disappointing so far.  After having seen the Lipscomb and Milwaukee games in person and hearing about the other losses, it is obvious that the "playing freer" and wide open offense isn't working.  With the players returning,  who had played a more structured, set-play offense under Keith and a number of new players, wouldn't it make sense to stay with the structured offense?  Very surprised Dru let this go on.  Maybe it's just me.  Of course, poor shooting and lousy free throw shooting hasn't helped.

What wide open offense? They play like they are being constrained. Wide open drives to the hoop and they kick it out. Got to let these guys drive, drive, drive to the hoop all day long. They are 0 and 6 because they are trying to play an offense from last year. Not going to work without Jimmy and Dae Dae. Team needs to run up and down. They have the depth, so use it to your advantage. These guys are all lost in half court sets and obviously can't shoot the three in those tight situations. Let em run. Drive to the hoop, kick out for the occasional three, and press all game long. You can go 10 deep, so use it.

Absolutely. Like to see Barre, Dixon, and Wilborn together with Necas or Hronsky and Dinkins out front. Be tough to score on that bunch. Weird combo I know, but what the hell at this point
