Offline We are all shocked by the start we have had. Why 1-7? I have been watching the Dukes since the Willie Somerset days in the early 60s. I went to every home game in Danny Nee’s 3-24 year. I am a die-hard and will continue to support this team. So please forgive the following as it is my 60+ years of fandom coming out. Offline We are all shocked by the start we have had. Why 1-7? I just posted on the last game thread that, only in half court play does a point guard become crucial. Rozier is at his worse in a slow down half-court were his short comings come fully bare. RE came here and ran a fast pace transition style with less than D-1 players but puts up big points fast and with a dependency on that point guard was minimal. Why do fast pace teams have high scoring games and very slow half court teams have little scoring? Every game this year, our defensive effort was enough to win but our half-court KD style can't make 60 points a game? Offense and defense are independent of each other. Play good defense, but run the heck on offense. Illinois played a pure transition offense and score over 50 points in the first half against the Dukes in the NCAA tourney. But that's independent of defense? So, why in the heck does a new coach that played pro ball, coach this low scoring style that is intensely over coached and makes all these highly skilled kids just stand there, in this mindless way. You recruit players for their offense, then you teach them defense. You should not try to coach out of them there offensive talent that your recruited them for. Just saying. 1-7 at this point kind of proves my point. Offline We are all shocked by the start we have had. Why 1-7? I have been watching the Dukes since the Willie Somerset days in the early 60s. Just saying. 1-7 at this point kind of proves my point. Agree with much of these posts. Corbett to me seems to be a bit of a liability at this point because he seems to complain non stop and isn't a great finisher and a horrible foul shooter as well. The constant complaining affects his defense as well. Why Edwards doesn't drive to the hoop everytime is on the coach. Necas and Dixon out above the 3 point line setting picks for what? They aren't getting the ball on a pick and roll. If I was Necas i'm going to the hoop everytime. Seems so much more hesitant this year. Dixon needs to be assertive. Too many restraints being put on these players. Let Hronsky, Necas, Dixon, Barre, and Dimichelle be the starting five at this point. They all hustle, and play the right way. Hronsky can play the point as he is a good ball handler and wouldn't over dribble like Rozier and Dinkins who just slow the pace down to a crawl and never get good looks or feed it underneath. Try something different Friday. Nothing has worked so far. Last edited by Rayrich (12/05/2024 7:30 pm) Offline Watching 8-0 Drake against 4-3 Valpo right now. That Drake coach knows how to coach. Lot of great young coaches out there if you are willing to to do the due diligence. Sad to watch our squad right now. I see so many low mid majors playing at a much higher level, not because of the talent, but because of the coaching. Hope Dru can figure it out.
Insanity or Renewal?
Here are some items that make us 1-7. The team does not have a guard (Jake excluded) that can beat his man and get to the basket. Team Defense gets too spread out leaving drives and open threes available. Rebounding is poor since the box out is not tended to on most plays. The ball needs to hit the post more often with more passing from the post. Generally, ball movement needs to speed up. Shooting is poor (example: second to last in FT in the entire NCAA???)
Here is one thing I like about those who will play the next game. These are strictly my opinions. I will leave Jake out due to his injury (and he was playing best on the team).
Kareem - Our only true ball handler
Tre - Stand still shooter
Jahsean- Bull to the basket
David - Rim protector
Maximus - Athletic
Matus - Shooter
Jakub- Good court sense
Chabi - Improving offensively
Cam - Aggressive
Here is one thing that hurts team play
Kareem - Size on defense (can live with that)
Tre - Too slow in the things he does
Jahsean - Picking the right spots to attack
David - Not being the physical presence needed
Maximus - Where has his game gone
Matus - Rebounding needed
Jakub - Be an aggressive offensive guy who looks to score
Chabi - a little better positioning
Cam - more offensive awareness
This team has talent. If Tomlin can change QBs while winning, we should renew the lineup even if it means some players change positions. For the next game, these are the guys I would start and who would play at least 25 minutes:
Kareem - Our only true point guard
Matus - Maybe our best outside shooter
Chabi - Progressively playing better
David - We need his size and he needs to play with another big
Jahsean - His aggressiveness is needed
Jake and Jakub should get minutes. Maximus would be my #8 until he kicks into gear. Tre and Cam would get spot duty.
Again, apologies for being too passionate about the Dukes. I will continue to hope for the better. That happens with change.
