Questions About Next Year's Players

Is Lawson definitely a PG? Has he actually signed or still a verbal commitment?

What position will Brandon Hall play? Does he have 1 or 2 years of eligibility? The DU website says he graduated from high school in 2020 & lists him as having played only 2 seasons of college basketball.

What position will Alex Williams play?

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

As far as Lawson is concerned I believe he is signed and is a true PG.

Hall probably a 2G does have 2 years but maybe 3 if the jr college rule goes into effect. Which could potentially give Dinkins another year.

Williams I believe is a SF who definitely looks like a PF but can shoot 3

Someone mentioned previously I believe CLK that 15 scholarship are available!

Of course we are sure to lose a couple players to portal also

Interesting comment about Dinkins. Do you have any intel that suggests he could be back for another season?

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

Let’s assume that Dinkins and Corbett are finished with their eligibility. Which players do you NOT want to lose in the transfer portal?

I’ll start with Eli Wilborn. He has the feet, hands, body size and a toughness that has the makings of him developing into a top 25 player in the conference.

Arness Lawson is listed as a point guard and I believe he has the ability to be an impact player as a freshman.

Also the NCAA ruled in December that as of now that one year of eligibility will be added if they meet certain requests. I believe Tre meets those requirements.

Eli has certainly established himself as a key player.  If he can learn to play without fouling he has All League potential.  I would like to see more of Eli and Dixon together on the court now that Chabi and Necas are back.

If Dinkins has an additional year and comes back, and I really hope he does, and if nobody transfers we only have one more scholarship. I don't think that is likely.

Hronsky and Necas, Dixon, Barre, Crawford, Rozier along with Eli,  I believe like it here and of course Jake. I'd like Max to stay. But he might find the portal attractive. Coach Dru is a players coach and there is a team spirit he creates that would make all these kids think twice about leaving. I like Max, but his skills may be way more attractive to a fast pace offensive oriented team.

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

I also would like Max to stay but he just did not do well in many games. I agree that a fast paced team would be good for him. Hope he doesn’t go to Dayton!

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

As for Lawson:    https://x.com/Arness_Lawson/status/1836866990369120602

I'd hope Necas, Wilborn, Hronksy, Crawford and DiMichele are back.
Then the group of Dixon, Rozer, Barre, Hall, Williams, would think at least 2+ of them are back.
Lawson and Aekins(a similar size to Rozier) are freshman.
Edwards should probably move on.   Corbett and Dinkins are done, I think.
So maybe 3-4 open spots????

NCAA colleges, particularly those in Divisions I and II, offer athletic scholarships for talented students in sports such as basketball. For Division I men's basketball, each school can offer up to 13 full-ride scholarships and for women's basketball, up to 15 full-ride scholarships.Oct 25, 2024

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

To me, Eli has to stay. No idea what his upside may be, but he is the MVP in the paint right now.
Can do what no other big is capable of at this point. Just needs to stay away from fouling as much. Has to learn to give up a basket now and then rather than a "and one."

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

If I had to name one player I think is most likely to leave it’s Wilborn. I hope I’m wrong.  Max is too inconsistent to play regularly so I’d not worry about him leaving.  I’d wish him well, seems like a nice kid, but for whatever reason he never got into a steady groove here and no reason to think will. I’d love to see Trey get an extra year and be our true SG. He’d flourish not having to play the point so much.

Re: Questions About Next Year's Players

Jake, Wilborn, Dixon, Chabi, Cam, Necas, Hronsky, & Williams are the players I most want back.

I would have included Rozier as well except I think it is extremely unlikely that Dru is capable of playing him an appropriate amount of minutes. If that were not the case, I would love to see him return for his senior season. I really like him as an 8th man playing 13-18 minutes when he is having a good game.

I don't know enough about Hall to have a strong opinion, but if he has 2 years of eligibility, I would like to see him in a Duquesne uniform next season. If he is a guaranteed one year player, I think he causes a logjam at the 2.

No, I really disagree. Eli came here and was slowly brought along and is becoming a beast of the A-10 the rest of the year and starting next year,  most likely,  to be the center part of both offense and defense in the best team in the A-10. . If he leaves, he is just starting over with a new coach that most likely will lightly regard his skills. His best chance going forward is with Coach Dru, where  he becomes the top beast of the A-10.  If Coach Dru Joyce  is anything, he is a players dream coach. Eli will stay with Coach Joyce  and be that beast of the A-10.  Dru likes some players too much, but making this kid the top of his team is very likely and the best move that Coach Dru would ever make.. Eli isn't going to pass up on that.  And, if I was him, I certainty  wouldn't. Eli is very smart. He knows this environment, he knows all the returning players have his back, and he knows this coach. now knows he is for real.  I think, Eli, is way to smart to go into the unknown portal.

Wilborn ONLY started getting minutes out of necessity - Chabi’s injury combined with Necas’. He rode the pine most of the rest of the season. I hope you are right but I’ve seen nothing that would make me think Dru likes him or he likes Dru.  I’m sure he’s not worried about starting over somewhere else as he’s likely behind both Dixon and Chabi on the depth chart.

I would like to point out that this last game, Eli blocked a shot in the paint that would have likely dropped in the bucket , but he blocked it and also recovered that blocked shot then  ran his own fast break and didn't show-boat, but put it in the basket? Heck, just maybe he should be moved to point guard because he moved so fast down the court??  I, HAVE, never seen that big of a player, move that fast on his own fast break and score. Never!   Eli is only scratching the surface of his potential. If we win the A-10 by surprise one more year, it will likely be Eli. And this coach giving all these kids the "green-light" to all take off and take the open shot. Eli is  just beginning to be a force. I believe Coach Dru is learning every kids potential, and Eli is earning coaches respect. Every game going forward, if we win, it will likely be, an Eli, a Max, or a Hronsky, or a Necas, or, most likely, Dinkins and Crawford going all out. We do have the players. Coach just needs the touch of keeping in the game, that player that is on fire that day.  Remember, you never can score while sitting on the bench while a lesser player was  just subbed in for you. Half of our loses happened that way.  It never works out any other way. Eli will stay only if coach plays him. We can't win it all without him. Like last year, a very mediocre season became mythical by winning at the end. Winning solves everything.

Thanks. I wouldn't have seen that article otherwise.

I guess we now know who Dru's main recruiting target for next season is. I would love to see Tre return.
