Next Season Wish List

First, I would like to see a couple of experienced point guards come in and keep just about everyone on this team. My Second wish is to have DU host the "Steel Bowl"  in OOC to play. Maybe, like, WV, Penn State, Arkon, Marshall, Penn, Xavier, RM, or even Pitt. It would fill up the Pens Arena since all these schools have local alum and are not in the same conferences so it's more than possible.  It gives each of these teams an early tourney to play where their fans can actually attend since it's very central for all to travel.  My third wish would be to play early OOC games against lesser opponents to get a chance for the team to gel and build up the win column to build momentum. Get as many in as possible. And, my forth wish is dollar beer day at every game. (Just Kidding) .

Re: Next Season Wish List

Like the $1.00 beer nite the best!  Also just kidding. Definitely need a solid point guard and hopefully have one coming from Ohio who's already signed. I do like the "Steel Bowl" idea but wonder if that can ever happen again. Probably wouldn't involve Pitt since they seem too afraid of losing to an "inferior" team. RM, WVU, and Penn St. along with the Dukes would be fun and very interesting. Hope something like that could be explored. We actually did play quite a few teams that we should have beaten IMO but we saw how that went. Anyway, next year can't come soon enough for me. Still believe the future to be bright for Duquesne BB. GO DUKES!!

I think the Dukes hosted the Steel Bowl when I was in school there and I think DU can possibly fill the Pens Arena if they got  any combination of these teams to play.

Why do we have to be kidding about the $1 beers every game?

Re: Next Season Wish List

An event like the old Steel Bowl probably won’t happen again, but I think Duquesne should schedule RMU again.  It seems rather disingenuous to complain about Pitt refusing to schedule Duquesne, and then do the same to RMU!  Play them and give the game a catchy name.

On another note, I’m sick in bed today with probably a Norovirus or food poisoning.  So I’ve been watching a lot of basketball, and in general the games all look the same.  Very little of the finesse and team-play on offense.  The A-10 game was just a rock fight.  I watched Missouri yesterday regularly the guy that brought the ball across half-court dribbled around until he found a driving lane and drove into the defense, or shot a three.  My point is that this is not good basketball!
I’ve seen posters on this board complain that Duquesne is poorly coached for occasionally failing to move the ball by passing, but this is the way coaches allow their guys to play.  It’s everywhere, and makes the game very repetitive and boring.  The players are talented and they want to show-off their talent by taking and making the toughest shots!  Trying to score on three defenders makes for some spectacular plays but also some very poor basketball.

I agree on scheduling RM and I would  like us to play St. Francis once again, even Akron would have some relevance on a home and away deal. Hope you get well soon.

Re: Next Season Wish List

Just a thought , but, maybe the Steel Bowl would work if it was sponsored by Nike, or some other sponsors? How are other early tournaments sponsored?  We did have the first Chuck Cooper Classic have 4 teams play. Maybe instead of calling it the Steel Bowl, have it as the Chuck Cooper Classic ?  Might get a lot of sponsors and a bigger tournament. Pittsburgh has the hotel space to accommodate major profession sports teams. The city has hosted NCAA Tournaments from time to time. It could give DU a lot of attention too.

Re: Next Season Wish List

RMU vs Duquesne, the city game.   That might touch a nerve up the street.
I dont think the PPG would be half full unless pitt plays in it, and not sure that would do it.  16,000 is a lot for bball in WPa.    Psu, wvu, marshall….they will be locked into football at that time.  And we arent bringing many.  RMU either.
Need point guard, badly.
Probably could use a GM.
I still dont know where NIL money comes from, but could use more.
Send ellis cannon packing and hire a DU person or bball person to sit with Benz on espn+ games.

Re: Next Season Wish List

How about a one day Saturday double header DU & Robert Morris both playing "Mid Major"  types not necessarily from the area..  Perhaps the loss of gate receipts concessions (for a game like the home game with a team like St. Peters) would be more than offset by a share of the proceeds .
This might attract some fans who would enjoy the opportunity to see two games for the price of one.. At DU and Robert Morris there aren't too many fans who are deeply invested in football and if it's on a Saturday (where adults can bring their children ) we don't have the Pitt people saying I have a conflict with the Wake Forest game..  And Penn Staters saying I have a conflict with the Iowa game.
Finally it's only 1 out of 30 games -  And maybe some of those children who enjoyed the doubleheader might say DADDY CAN WE SEE MORE DUQUESNE GAMES!!!!!

Re: Next Season Wish List

Serious money must be spent on upgrading the assistant coaching staff to address experience issues, high-level Xs & Os, & to bring in the best connected recruiter that can be bribed to take the job. If that recruiter comes as a package deal with a difference making player that also gets big money, all the better. 1 or 2 new faces seems like an imperative.

The Dambrot era reached its greatest heights after the addition of Dru. Coach Joyce deserves the same level of support staff and better. There is nobody on the Dukes bench that can be considered a hot coaching prospect. This is a very bad thing.
