Point guard

I’d love to see a true PG get locked down soon. We have shooters and a sizable front court .  I’m starting to think Dru brings in a Dru type PG. pass first, good ball handling veteran type.  He has to know this team sorely needs one.

Re: Point guard

100% we need a PG, floor general kind of guy, and we know they exist, probably the most difficult part is settling on $.
But I am not sold on we have enough in the front court.   Dixon and Hughley are it.   And one of those played less than 10 min/game last year.   I dont consider Necas a big, not the way we use him.   And the freshman from Denmark, cant really count on him yet.
Experienced PG and another upside and younger PF/C type would make me feel excited going into the summer.

I really like Dezmon Briscoe. I think everyone should remember that name from before but if you dont: 3 Star PF/C class of 2025. Duquesne was in his initial top 6 before committing to Iowa. The rest of his list was Butler, DePaul, Cincinnati, and Xavier. Since has decommitted and has taken visits to Kent State and College of Charleston and was supposed to take a visit to Duquesne.

Dezmon has informed me that no visit has been scheduled and I have absolutely no idea how he is not a top priority for Joyce at this moment. Kid is a stud and seems like we could easily compete with those other schools for his services.

Re: Point guard

Briscoe looks like an athletic 6’8” forward, similar to David Dixon.  Definitely not a PG, but does make sense with the departure of Chabi Barre.
In regard to the need for a PG, Dru has Dom Aekins and possibly Arness Lawson, if Lawson is cleared to play.  Maybe that fill the need.

Re: Point guard

I have no issue with Lawson or Aekins as players. I just think that having the PG position in the hands of freshmen is a poor plan.

My concern is compounded by the unknown that is Lawson's legal status.

In reading about Brandon Hall as a high school recruit I found that he was listed as a PG quite often. That strikes me as interesting.

Does anyone know why Hall did not play his freshman year at ETSU? Did he take a redshirt year? Might he have 3 years of eligibility left?

The Dukes also need another big. There is not enough depth at C/PF.

The fact that Hall stuck around and Rozier left is leading me to believe the plan is to get him major run at PG. Still need another good, true, PG and I think the backcourt will be solid.  Dixon/Hugley at C and Necas/Williams/Jellum at PF should be solid so one more more for depth is the prudent move for sure. Another rim protector would be my guess.

Re: Point guard

Agreed Styles.  We fill the spots you mention and next year could be very, very interesting...........

Re: Point guard

Briscoe would be great, but him along with a good PG would be expensive, I would think.   IDK the Duq NIL funding at all, and what we currently are spending, or could spend.   But get those 2 in here and we could be talking double bye in the A10T next year.

Re: Point guard

No knock on Dinkins whatsoever but a solid PG on this past season's team would have easily resulted in at least a half dozen more wins. Dinkins was PG by default. Not blaming him at all!  Much of the time we were like a rudderless ship.

Re: Point guard

VCU,GW,GM , SLU, SJU, and Dayton have all been killing it in the Portal.  Dru has started strong with the pick up of Hugley and Jimmie Williams.  Both are key pieces.  We have 4 roster openings and, IMHO, at least two of these are high priority, can't miss, needs.

Prioity #1.  We need a big, seasoned, skilled point guard.  We can't rely on freshmen guards, nor can we rely on Hall to fill that need.  Hall had serious knee surgery, and as of the end of the season, almost a year after his surgery was not in full contact practice with the team.  He may be fully recovered and able to fill that need net season, but not worth the risk.

Priority #2.  We need a strong power forward.  We need a tough nut, big strong guy who can back his guy to the basket, drive the ball, and get his share of put backs.  In other words, a better version of Corbett.  From what I have seen on videos of Alex Williams he is more of a 2/3 than a 3/4.  I could be wrong but that is my opinion.  Also, I view Jellum as a future piece, he needs to develop more.

Priority #3.  I also agree that we need another backup center.  Not as critical as the top two priorities but still needed.  Here is where a kid like Brisco could fit in nicely while gaining some experience.

Finally I would give the last spot to a walk on to save some money.
