The defense at the guard spot and his ability to penetrate, get to the basket and finish the play are all important qualities for this team. According to this tweet he committed to Duquesne. Hope it is true. I think he would be what the Doctor Dru ordered. Last edited by CLK (5/03/2025 10:35 am) Hope this is true, CLK. Would me a significant upgrade at the point guard position. Just how long is, "a long ass time"? He has some Tre Clark attributes on both offense and defense. I like the fact that he was awarded for his defense! The defense at the guard spot and his ability to penetrate, get to the basket and finish the play are all important qualities for this team. I don't see much of Tre Clark, but what I do see some of is Dru Joyce, as a player that is. I wish he had better range, but I like everything else I see. I'd say we need to find a deadly sniper to pair with him, but Dru doesn't seem to be the kind of coach who likes one tool players. He seems to really value versatility. After shooting better than 43% from 3 point range this season, I think Cam Crawford qualifies as a sniper. I failed to include Jimmie Williams on my list of strong 3pt shooters. 37.4% as a juco & 40% this year at USF on 2.33 attempts per in only 19 minutes a game. phil95, good points. I (and probably others) have overlooked Cam’s 3 point shooting prowess. This might be due to the fact that Cam gets most of his 3 point shots from the offense vs dribbling and creating his own shot. I anticipate that Cam will have a really good season after playing a year in Dru’s system (why I love bringing in guys with multiple years of eligibility available vs 1 and done). Good points Phil. Maybe we don't need to find a sniper after all. Good points Phil. Maybe we don't need to find a sniper after all. I agree. Getting a great shooting point guard would be a luxury at this point. if anybody remembers Brandon Knight at Pitt obviously we’re not getting someone of his quality but a point guard that passes first and runs the office perfectly would be a great pick up. Jake is not a knockdown shooter, but he is going to provide a lot of what the team missed last season - crafty scoring, energy. I don’t remember him being a great defender his freshman year, but I don’t remember him being a liability either. Point being I’m OK with the scoring on this team right now we just need a quarterback.

Jakevion “Jay” Buckley, PG, Visits Duquesne
Senior transferring from Southeastern Louisiana. 1st team all-conference (Southland Conference which has McNeese St, Lamar, Nicholls, etc) and all defensive team selection. Looks like a player; at first glance, only negative is that he is a below average 3 point shooter.

Jay played 2 seasons at Lamar prior to transferring to Southeastern. These highlights are from his Lamar playing days. •

This is the guy everyone has been clamoring for!
Also love the defense stats not to mention the great FG and FT percentage!
I also like that our freshmen PGs can learn from him and be ready to take over next year go Dukes sign him up!

Re: Jakevion “Jay” Buckley, PG, Visits Duquesne
Is Jay a right-handed jump shooter that is stronger finishing drives with his left? These highlights & the ones from his time at Lamar sure make it look that way.
I found this blurb about his juco days very encouraging:
Junior College:
A two-year letterwinner ... A two-star prospect ... Averaged 18.4 points and pulled down 4.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore ... Also ranked among the national leaders dishing 7.8 assists per game ... Was a 75-percent free throw shooter and connected on 34 percent of his three-point attempts during his second season ... As the starting point guard, Buckley led TVCC to the NJCAA National Tournament during his rookie season ... Scored 34 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists in a Region XIV tournament victory.

Alex Williams is a career 39% 3pt shooter on more than 250 attempts.
These 2 are a good start, but the Dukes need a 3rd player to shoot 37% or better on high volume to keep the floor spread. Maybe Jake and/or Necas will show this kind of improvement.

Hopefully, Alex Williams was able to pick up knowledge during his injury season and is fully recovered. I don’t know how much time he was able to spend, if any, playing and practicing with the team.
Jimmie Williams is intriguing, especially with having 3 years of eligibility remaining. It’s not much of a step up, if any, from playing in the AAC to the A10. Hopefully that high percentage 3 point shot will come with him to Duquesne and improve even further. •
