Re: Dukes at Va. Tech TODAY 10/25 exhibition game

52% from FT line?   Again with bad FT shooting?    Hopefully Guinyard is the guy who can close out games(5 of 6 from the stripe).
But overall, gotta be happy and excited for a win at an ACC school, no matter the situation/schedule.
Do the Dukes have another preseason game this week?   Or did they play their other previously?

They beat Cleveland State at home last week.   Closed scrimmage.

Re: Dukes at Va. Tech TODAY 10/25 exhibition game

Thoughts...
-This isn't a smack on Dru, but he mentioned he was happy about their Poise.  Well, it was an exhibition game and Hugley got thrown out.  I hope he is not a head case...just saying
-Guinyard is a player
-Happy about Necas
-If we have foul shooting issues again, it's time to go back to the sports psychologist
-Glad we were competitive, but with that said, VT was picked 12th out of 14th.  Add that to Yes, this was just an exhibition game so I believe we still don't know how good Duquesne is this year.
- Well written article by Dave Mackall
-My  "hope" - Dave Dixon is a force and takes over games this year.
Go Dukes!

Fam all good points! As always a lot to learn and grow from. Hopefully the FT shooting will be much better as a lot of new faces who were decent to good shooters coming in.
And just a quick clarification they were picked 12th out of 18 teams 2 better than Pitt.
Go Dukes

Mixed messages on VA Tech's prospects for the season with that 12th place prediction matched with being #71 on KenPom.

Interesting that all 18 ACC teams are ranked in Ken Pom’s top 100; VT is 12th in there as well. I would have guessed that the oddsmakers would have had the Dukes as a 6 or 7 point underdog if it was a regular season game.

Re: Dukes at Va. Tech TODAY 10/25 exhibition game

Quick note on Hugley getting tossed.  I was very concerned when I heard that but I rewatched the game and noted:  a VT was charged a technical on the very first basket for a minor taunting action.  Then, Hugley and a VT player got tangled up trying to get position and some very minor shoving happened - both players were given a technical. I’ve seen that type of play a 100 times and only about 20% of the time you’ll get a technical for it. In a game that was especially chippy (this was not) you call the T every time but in that case it could have gone as a no call and nobody would have complained. The last T was after he hit a 3, he made the “shooting gun” hand gesture.  That’s an automatic T and very poor judgement.

I felt better about his “mind set” after watching. He needs to be better but I didn’t see a Chad Baker type loose cannon at all

The more I think about it, I believe the refs were doing what they should be doing in an exhibition game. Getting the guys ready for how games can be called and making sure the players know so they are ready for the regular season

Re: Dukes at Va. Tech TODAY 10/25 exhibition game

Yeah, exhibition game, they are probably calling it close, enforcing the new rules or guidelines.   Hughley is in year 5 or 6 now, the gun shooting thing is childish, he is not a child, and that's unacceptable by any player.   A quick talk at practice should clear all that up.

Ha!  Styles1229, Chad Baker is the Touchstone for loose cannon players. I'm so surprised he didn't self-destruct and has made it through to this final year at USC. Hard to believe that he played for the Dukes back in 20-21.

I agree that we don't have anything to worry about Hugley. I think he is highly competitive and will stick up for his teammates.  We are going to see some bangin' in the paint this year.

Re: Dukes at Va. Tech TODAY 10/25 exhibition game

The way KD managed such nonsense from Baker-Mazara & Michael Hughes made me absolutely crazy. Those situations were heavy on my mind before I was able to watch Saturday's game for myself. I, too, am of the opinion that Hugley isn't likely to be a chronic offender of this type.

Baker was on Auburn last year and they made a serious run in the tourney. He was a starter!  I can’t believe he still has another year of eligibility.  And yes, he is the yard stick by which all loose cannons will be measured. Perfect example of how a player could have so much talent but still hurt the team on a nightly basis. I watched KD with him and you could tell - KD had no idea how to manage that situation. I’m sure one of the big road signs for KD that retirement was very close.

Think we won't have a problem with Hughley. Just a little bit fired up. Good to see. This team is going to be bad ass special. So much talent and depth. Picked 9th in the A-10 Lol. The biggest joke ever.

Wouldn't worry about Hughley. No better way to set the precedent that we are here to stay and deal with than in an exhibition game against a team who was supposed to be our superior, but are not. Hughley just setting the tone. This team will be special no doubt.

Re: Dukes at Va. Tech TODAY 10/25 exhibition game

My biggest question-mark this week has been who will the backup PG be? Hall, Aekins, or Lawson? This is where I feel Rozier was the biggest loss to the portal. Now that it appears there is a true PG on this roster again, Rozier would've excelled even more in this role. I have no doubt Aekins and Lawson will be great in due time but they are still freshman this year. Hall did not look especially great on Saturday but is going to be 22 YO come conference play. I guess I am answering my own question when I say they have 10+ non-conference games to figure it out.

Agreed. An experienced , competent, back up guard on a mid major team is sadly a luxury only a few teams will enjoy in this new college basketball world.  Too much opportunity elsewhere. Hopefully we can get lucky with one of the 3 you mentioned. We did with Kareem. And who knows, maybe Jake can fill that role when healthy. I’ve always seen him as a positionless type player.  In short shifts, maybe he can run point.
