Here are a couple interesting trivia bits about Duquesne University's history in healthcare that pre-dated the founding of our new medical school.
-Old Main is actually built on the grounds of a former 2 story hospital run by Dr. Albert Walter. The hospital was jacked up and moved across the street to where Bayer Hall now sits. According to University Archivist, Thomas White, they added a new ground floor below the relocated hospital and called it St. John's Hall. (I have to meet this Thomas White some day). See this video for the story and even more info about haunted Duquesne-
- Duquesne applied to open a medical school over a century ago in 1911 but was told that we already had Pitt's medical school and was denied, This could have evolved into a Catholic Medical System that would have logically included Mercy and St. Francis similar to developments in other major cities.
