I am kind of looking back at the RE years with a new perspective, and comparing the players we have now as to the ones Ron brought in. Despite the complaints about Ron for the turnover, the program never regressed under him. His biggest error was not recognizing how many people including Amodio and his assistants were driving knives in his back. Now we have a hot wet mess again. I will never believe that firing the guy who raised the DU program from the dead was the right decision. Personally I believe Ron would have got us to the NCAA given more time, and my belief is just as valid as the speculation from those few with the loud voices that wanted Ron fired claiming he would never get us there. The decision to fire Ron set this program back 5 years if not longer. Having said that JF is the coach now and there is no going back. While this season is not over yet I have yet to see any evidence to suggest to me that he is a better coach than Ron despite being paid more than double the salary. Hopefully he can surprise us and get this team to not finish in last place this season and get some top notch "difference maker" recruits this spring to give us some hope we can move up next season, but from what I have seen to date I would not bet on it. Unfortunately I have to agree with you folks as well. There was some real excitement in Ron's first years. Phil, you left out Reggie and Tuck. Both very solid defenders. Both JC transfers. Two very good years from both of them. I agree with everything said here, too. How about $ 600,000 worth of recruting. Here is my take on the current saga. Please don't throw anything until you are done reading. RE got us up a level without any doubt. Looking back as they say - hindsite is 20-20. But we didn't get to the NCAA's, TJ left, his recruting class was looking sad, etc. So I at least understand that if the AD thought we needed to get to the next level -which we weren't = a change may have been in order. But here lies my issues: Like everyone else who is posting about the state of the Dukes, I am very frustrated. However, Jim Ferry has had only one true recruiting year. Any coach needs at least three full recruiting classes before evaluating him. So I believe we have to continue to exercise patience. Note that this is coming from a 30 year + season ticket holder and from a person who disagreed that RE should have been fired at the time he was and in the way he was. But Ron is gone and we have to focus on how to improve on our current status. I have to agree with pressure. I am super frustrated too. I find myself reading about Penn State Hoops (also depressing) almost as much as I do with Duquesne and that was never the case. That said, we have to hope for the best from our coach. There is no sense in rooting against him. I want him to succeed and I will give him 4 or 5 years to accomplish that success. I know it sucks to ask for patience, and I know it's rough when RE was so much more successful. I am extremely anxious to see what this spring recruiting class looks like. I want a PG who can pass and dribble, a SF who can shoot, and a legit PF if possible. That's a lot to ask, but I don't care. So Duquesne is supposed to have a recruiting class??

Just a comparison
First, after the initial year when Ron pulled out 10 wins, Duquesne was at 500 or over.
There was post season play, an almost NCAA bid and of course the 11 game win streak when Duquesne got national attention.
We also got the fades, but at least we won enough so that a losing streak was noticeable.
Saunders v Soko, I would take Damian plus we had him for 4 years. I put Soko in Mark Stevenson category. A scorer on a bad team.
Jay Jones v Mel Boulding, give me Mel even if just two years.
Coulter and Duquesne guards (less Mason) against BJ Monterio at the point as freshman, give me BJ.
Bill Clark, Robert Mitchell, and others could play, v LG Gill, not Gill.
I Watkins, didn't play for 1 1/2 years and it shows, no wonder he signed with us.
RE turned programs around, we had a turned around program that seems to be going the other way.
Instead of fans complaining about the CBI tournament, that would only be a dream today.
Another Feb, another realization that this program is not even mediocre, it is just directionless.
A diehard fan since 1961

Re: Just a comparison
I don't know Everhart personally. I've had exactly one conversation with him, that occurring on his radio show (I believe I was maybe the 3rd caller in the history of the Ron Everhart Show). With that caveat, I believe he was almost the perfect coach for the Dukes. First, he woulda stayed at Duquesne forever. After so many years of coaching, he seemed happy working close to where his family lived. Second, he never focused on what he didn't have. There was never any complaining about the facilities, lack of administrative support, failure to pay for cell phones, size of his office, or any of the other stuff we heard some of his precedessors complain about.
It's probably fair to give any college basketball coach 4 years before evaluating him. However, if there are fans (like me) complaining about Ferry & just as many who tire of some fans (like me) lamenting about Everhart, I feel like Ferry has brought all this on himself. Last year, I listened to every one of his pre- & post-game interviews, & he couldn't say 15 words without saying, "I don't have good players." It was always, "Things will get better when I get my players & can play the way I want to." There was another time when he said something like, "I don't know what went on here before," which seemed like a direct slap in the face to Ron. So Ferry has invited these comparisons & "the way he wants to play" has not looked good. Instead we're getting excuses about how young the team is (It's not; he starts a senior, a junior, & 3 sophomores who have the experience of juniors.) or how tough the A-10 is (Of course it is! What was he expecting?). Time to start seeing $600,000 worth of coaching from this guy.

Re: Just a comparison
1. From what people have said here and heard, a large part of the reason for the change was because the AD didn't particularly like RE (no one really has said why - I mean he did hire him) so that was part of the reason for the firing - connected to not getting to the NCAA and TJ leaving and not a good recruting class coming in or signed.
2. Ferry was NOT this AD's first choice. It was probably his 2nd or 3rd. He fired the guy without seeing who he might get. Now that is fine when your record is terrible - but it wasn't and RE brought us along.
3. So, I guess I understand why he let RE go - my issue is that we have downgraded from what we had and WHO he has NOT brought in.
4. We have beaten terrible teams except for one. Again, I can't see us being any better than next to the last next year. I keep saying this - but it took Ferry 6 years to get a winning team and that was in a lower league . Will he get 12 years here???
