Cooped up I decided to rewatch the Dukes vs BYU in the tournament. A few things crossed my mind.
-Necas-Dixon-Jake all started and played the majority of time in that win. Necas seems to have lost some confidence, Jake seems to have lost a step, and Dixon looks like he is at the same level he was then. He hasn’t digressed but hasn’t improved much.
-Though they aren’t Clark and Grant? Williams n G. “Are the replacements” and a little below those 2, but not a lot below. So with 3 of that 5 still here, and a similar bench, I sincerely ask what has happened?
One thing I do know is when they played that game, they were Rated 25th in the country in defense. Maybe that’s the whole issue. Aren’t we last?

Phoenix thanks for thes stats I would love to see Cam turn it around offensively. His 98.8 def eff is solid, and Max's 138.6 shows the issues clear as day. But I'd still give Jake the edge for more minutes at the 3 right now. Small sample rust from his foot injury aside, when healthy he's the high-motor, smart, team-first guy who competes every possession and fits what we need to win A-10 games. Effort to me is greater than waiting on inconsistent talent.Appreciate the numbers, man—helps the discussion.Go Dukes

I guess my eyes are failing me as far as Jake getting minutes over the other options. It has been tough for him on both ends of the court since his return from injury, but especially noticeable on defense where teams waste no time taking him straight to the basket for easy layups. It is repeated every game, by whomever Jake is guarding. I think he’s lost a step or steps since the injury.
Offensively he isn’t going to score enough to compensate for the points allowed.
I hate to say it but right now he is playing like a walk-on from a Class A (smallest classification). I certainly hope he can find the key to get back to his performance-level from 2023-24.

I think Necas is getting criticism he doesn't deserve on this board.
He is shooting .561/.448/.712 while already having taken 11 more FTs in 20 games than he took in 29 games last year.
From the beginning of the season he has been the team's most complete & consistent defender while doing an excellent job of staying out of foul trouble.
Just because he is 6'10" doesn't mean he is a post player. That is not really his offensive game & never was. He scores from 3, in transition, collecting garbage, & in the mid-range. Offensively, he is much more of a big, strong 3 than a 4 or stretch 4.
In the 64 games the played as a freshman & sophomore, he scored in double figures 7 times. He has done so 9 times in this year's 20 games. I don't believe he started any games as a freshman while going in & out of the starting lineup last season.
He is the team's leading rebounder.
I want him to shoot 4-5 more times a game, but those shots should be generated by sets designed specifically for him to shoot 3s & actions that get him a running start at the hoop.

No doubt that everyone here wants to see Jake make a full recovery from his foot problems. His story was one of the highlights of the 2024 Championship run. A walk-on from a small local school who was a great high school player, has to step in for the team’s injured star, and helps turn around a near disaster! It was like a movie!

Phoenix agree with CLK. a.k.a FORUM LEGEND. Great job thank you.

I don't see Jimmie & TG as replacements for anyone. I think we sometimes forget that they had 2 seasons together & that was a huge factor in the success of 23-24.
I am just about ready to declare that Jimmie is a better all-around player as a junior than Dae Dae was in 22-23. If Williams continues to terrorize the A-10 like he has lately, his year end stat line will better than Dae Dae's in every major category except FT shooting.
I would definitely take senior year TG over junior season Jimmy Clark. Jimmy was a better defensively, no question, but he was nowhere near the playmaker, shooter, & all-around scorer. Jimmy also turned over the ball way too much & was frequently in foul trouble that season. Clark improved significantly after his junior season.
