I was unprepared in an argument on this subject, so I asked my computer about it. Rant begins: the portal is undermining what made college sports distinct. Makes it a less stable, unprincipled pro sport. Not built around education first; makes college sports transactional. Teams are the losers, no stability; a revolving door, not a team. Tension among players and schools: the haves versus have-nots. Further destroys competitive balance. Erodes loyalty and tradition. A slippery slope to other things. Strips away the qualities that made them worth caring for in the first place. Rant ends. What to do other than stick your head in the ground?

I certainly don’t know what the answers are but the schools (especially large schools) brought this on themselves and by default everyone else.
For decades and decades, they made money off of college athletes with the only return a scholarship. Sure that is a lot for most students. But most students were allowed to have jobs and make money off their name.
If the universities and colleges gave a stipend commensurate with the university standards, you don’t have this problem right now in my opinion.
The funny part is it’s not the big eating the small. Oh that is happening. It’s that the bigger (Ohio State, Texas) eating the big (Pitt, Syracuse, Kansas). And listening to the big whine they can’t compete.
All you need to compete now is a billionaire alumnus.

The NCAA and courts have ruined college athletics. The first major problem was when they let schools jump from conference to conference. It is totally insane that non revenue producing sports teams travel in conference across the country. It’s shameful that in state rivalries are almost non existent. The transfer portal and NLI money have wrecked the landscape of college athletics. What the NCAA should do is first tell all the universities, these are the new rules and either accept them or form your own minor league professional sports teams.
Start off by telling the Division one football teams you are going to be aligned in conference by geographical location. There would be 11 conferences of twelve teams. Each conference will have a championship game and the winner automatically qualifies for the championship tournament. This replaces all minor bowls. 11 conference champions and 5 at large selections to make a 16 team tournament. 16 teams takes four weeks to crown a champion. They are not even in school these four weeks, that’s if they go at all.
Now basketball, you have roughly 200 schools remaining that do not play division 1 football. Align these schools, geographically as well as size and any other affiliation. Example would be Catholic Universities in the east, and Midwest, and West would have their own separate conferences. The west kinda already has this with the WCC.
These new conferences will save a ton of money on travel expenses and more fans can travel to away games. The rivalries with be put back into college athletics.
The transfer portal problem should be handled the following way. You get two transfer maximum. On the second transfer you must sit out a year. However you do get an extra transfer without sitting out if the coach that signed you retires, is fired or moves to another university. This transferring every year is a total joke. I am aware that sometimes a kid or a coach makes a mistake when choosing each other, but more than two times is ridiculous.
Moving on to the NLI money. Simple, you have a cap on it for each school. The NCAA sends the checks directly to the players and they all make the same amount of money. This may also lighten the amount of players transferring. Kids may now want to go to college at their local university or actually go to a university that has something the kid is interested in besides their sport, like course of study or location. If professional teams have caps why not colleges.
If the big schools don’t like this then have your own league and see how that works out, because the top 25 teams in basketball and football will only be playing each other and that would not be a good product for the fans or advertisers. Plus the big donors money could be used in other ways like facility improvements for the athletic teams or educational facilities.
Plus if a school breaks any of the rules, an automatic death penalty. If the players don’t like it go to the minor leagues. Quit making a travesty of college athletics.

This is a great & sensible idea.

The major conferences have huge long-term and multi-billion dollar madia contracts, that are long-term. I don’t see those contracts disolving with the conferences. Remember TV and Streaming dictates who plays who and when they play. The NCAA has lost most of its’s clout. The B1G and the SEC tell the NCAA how things will go down.
In terms of NIL and player wages, the NCAA has proven to lack integrity on all levels. They are probably one of the worst choices to handle player payments. It would be best to keep the NCAA away from the money!
Finally, I think there is some merit to taking steps to rein in transfers, but expect law suits if anyone tries to limit a players right to choose which school he wants to attend.

Excellent suggestions Wildwood, equitable and sensible, but unfortunately there are the realities that Levon has pointed out.
