Re: Chaim Galbut

From link above (thanks BluffHunter)

Chaim Galbut has committed to Duquesne, where he'll aim to become the first observant Orthodox Jew to play four years of DI college basketball.

The 6'7 forward observes the Sabbath and was discovered on social media by Duquesne, throwing down dunks

So he can’t play games on Saturday?

Thanks FAM

Real Fact: Chaim has confirmed he will not be playing any games on Saturdays in observance of Shabbat

Re: Chaim Galbut

Thanks for posting the interview. He seems like a well-adjusted guy.  He has apparently been a very impressive player!

Re: Chaim Galbut

2026 three star forward Chaim Galbut has committed to Duquesne!

Galbut took a gap year this past season for development, but played his senior season at Miami Country Day School in 2024-25, where he averaged 16.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.7 bpg, and 2.0 spg

He was nicknamed “The Jewish Jordan” after going viral on social media throwing down dunks in a yarmulke

Re: Chaim Galbut

Okay.  I’ll be the villain.  I respect the young man’s wishes.   But not playing on the day where at least 40-50% of your conference games are played is really not optimal for winning.

Especially if as a three star recruit he is eventually a starter.  I’ll probably be crushed for saying this so have at it.

Re: Chaim Galbut

Nah. You just wrote what everyone else is, to some extent, thinking. It is a huge issue & something every teammate, opponent, coach, athletic department administrator, & fan will have to learn about & accept.

Looking at this past season's schedule, I think he would have missed 10 or 11 games.

The A-10 quarterfinal against VCU would have been an interesting situation because of its 5 pm Friday start. The official sunset for that date was 7:44 pm. 97% of the time the game would be over in plenty of time for him to play & be prepared to start his observance of shabbat.

Would he do that? What if the game went into double OT?

I have high hopes for Chaim as a player. I'll be rooting for him just a little bit more than the other players. I am also fascinated by the prospect of his having to navigate the college basketball culture & its institutions.

Re: Chaim Galbut

There was no ill will or prejudice in your response.  You were just stating something that is obvious in terms of playing time.  In one way, the coach doesn't have to worry about him being a starter.  I know that is strange to say, but he will hopefully be a strong off the bench player.

FYI - last year there were 33 games - 14 were on a Saturday.  I, like all of you, will wish him well and hope he is a plus for wins when he does play.

"Matzav.com has learned that Duquesne has already arranged for the first 15+ games not to be held on Shabbos"

I know his convictions have likely pushed a few teams to not pursue him. But is he good enough to be making these types of accommodations? I have no idea.  Rooting for this to work out for everyone.

I think Duquesne should be doing that, the first 15 game are OOC, so they can be played any day, really, and they should ask the A10 to give them Sunday games, but the A10 has tv deals set up on Saturdays I believe with USA network.    But it cant hurt to ask.   And we'll find out how good he is, no one knew he was 24 hrs ago.

With all due respect I like attending games on Saturday.  I don’t get this at all.  Moving your schedule around for one player.  This is just a bad idea.  Moving non conference games in Nov and December to Sunday.  To go up against the Steelers.  Not a good idea by the administration.

I said my piece and I’ll shut up about it.

I honestly have to question this. I doubt very seriously if Duquesne has more than 5 non conference games scheduled for next season yet. Duquesne struggles every year to complete its schedule well into late August. Hopefully there will be some accommodations made but I high doubt the first 15 games are already scheduled.

Re: Chaim Galbut

I had the same thought. There's no way that's accurate.

On the bright side, Chaim looks to be broad shouldered & every bit of 6'7" in that picture with Dru & Chase.

Perhaps the A-10 will be amenable to the Dukes playing mostly 7pm games on Saturday in an effort to capture the interest of the otherwise untapped Jewish fan base. Yoav & Chaim playing on the same team is sure to create at least some new Dukes fans.

Is it really going to be that big of an issue? How many of our conference games were part of the A10's national broadcast package last year, like 3? Home games against VCU and URI, road game against Fordham, that's it. No other A10 team made fewer appearances on USA, CBSSports, ESPN, etc. Not sure the conference will have that much say on when our games will start. Certainly our Saturday conference home games should be scheduled in the evening, there were 3 this past season. As for the road games, well I guess that's up to the teams we're playing. Seems like a good test case for inclusion to me.

Re: Chaim Galbut

You would hope that the coaching staff didn't pull the trigger without being aware of how to guarantee at least some reduction in shabbat-effected games.
