Back to back and belly to Abele ...

I thought Marhold was primed for a breakout year but it's Martins Abele who has really stepped up. The more he plays the better he does. He is doing a lot of the Charles Oakley stuff that helps teams win ... tough defense against big men, screens, big rebounds. I know a lot of folks question his hands, but a lot of his turnovers come off of rebounds when the guards aren't looking to get the ball from him. I don't think he's a dominant scorer type, but I think he's capable of 10 a night and 10 rebounds by next year.

If he gives us 10 and 10 next year, we'll be a very good team.

81, the kid has really picked up his game. Yeah, I think you stick Soko and Winters on either side of him with Colter and Jeremiah 2:1 in the backcourt with another legit PF on the bench (Watkins) along with Jerry Jones and Pantophlet and we're in business.

Abele has really worked hard on his game, and seems to be getting better and better.  I really like how he plays in our zone.  Hopefully he will develop more stamina and get more minutes.

7 footers don't grow on trees. I'm glad Coach Ferry has been patient with him. If he becomes a major piece, it really accelerates our timetable. People have been of the mistaken opinion that in order to run, you need 5 greyhounds. Not true. You can run quite well with 4, if the 5th guy is cleaning up the boards, and can throw the outlet pass.

Abele's problem playing for Ron wasn't his inability to run, it was his lack of quickness on the defensive end. With our perimeter players running all over the court, Abele was going to end up drawing a million fouls when the other team was able to beat the defense. He's a much better fit for this style. Shawn James was the perfect guy for what Ron wanted to do. An athletic shot blocker, who could serve as the last line of defense when teams were able to avoid turning the ball over, and get to the hoop.
