Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Oh for crying out loud! Will the madness ever end? This is not a super major offense, but both deserve, and will be suspended for a certain number of games. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb!!!

Obviously, it would be the height of hypocrisy for most on this board to act like these guys should be drawn and quartered for underage drinking. However, as we all know, there is a price to be paid for being caught, as well as fighting, but running from the cops was just stupid. I see at least a 5 game suspension coming, maybe as long as 10.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

From what I have heard Jones and Mason were sticking up for their walk on teammate, Christian Johnston, who was hit randomly at a pizza place.

The fighting, and fake ID doesn't bother me that much. Running from the cops can get you killed.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

This is NOT a comment on what type of punishment these young men should or will receive, only what I would expect as a result if duq81 is right about the length of the suspension: If you take Mason out of the lineup for 5-10 games, you can pretty much write off next season.

Running from the cops is certainly stupid, dangerous, and if I wasn't clear, stupid, as duq81 said. But getting into fights is equally stupid. Wasn't that long ago that a couple of our kids had a brush-up with some punks at an on-campus dance, shots were fired, and lives were changed. Thanks to God that nothing tragic happened this time.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

I wonder if this happened on the South Side?

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Sticking up for their teammate is not something to be criticized. Running from the police was not smart and extremely dangerous. But I'm sure plenty of folks on this board have been in situations where they have stood up for friends. Idealy they need to not involve themselves in these type of situations at all.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Stop making up what-if scenarios. They were arrested, they deserve 5 or 10 games, case closed. Unless there was something more, then yank their scholarships. Mason is supposed to be a leader on the team. No Longer.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

What is the basis for 5 (or 10) games? Seems to be a big difference between the two. The same people calling for this will be the same negative nellies complaining about wins during the season.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

This looks bad for Mason, worse for Jones. The issue is not whether people will be pessimistic about the team's record this year (I was just stating an obvious fact). The issue is that these young men have broken some laws, embarrassed themselves, their team and the University, and are facing punishment for doing so.

And those who want no punishment simply enhance these players' air of entitlement. Maybe it is two games. I don't know the predetermined sanctions for such things. But they deserve to be punished in some form, and I don't mean running laps after practice. The way you hurt them is to remove playing time.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

They were picked to finish last or at the bottom.  My belief is that they would have finished last or near the bottom.  This really isn't going to make much difference.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

See here's another reason why we can never compete with the big boys. If this happened at Duke or Notre Dame or North Carolina or LSU or Alabama, it would simply be a matter of "What kind of brand new car do the arresting officers want and the paperwork would just disappear.?"

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Maybe they should be drawn and quartered.  C'mon, let the system play out and whatever the consequences are, so be it.  In the thirty five plus years of criminal law that I practiced, the bond required to be posted always told me how serious the charge(s) are/were. $300 and $100 respectively?  Wow, doesn't sound like capital punishment cases to me! The kids should worry more about how pissed off Ferry will  be and what he will do more than what the wrath of justice will mete out.  At the end of the day, neither one of these kids will have a "record' to worry about.  And at the end of the day, some splinters may need picked off their respective arses.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Grammy, I understand your points, and while I generally believe society has become over-litigious (no offense), I don’t thinks this can or should be looked at as a case of “boys being boys.” I also think they’ve harmed themselves personally because some day both of these young men will be applying for jobs and simple background checks will recall this incident fairly easily, since there are at least three media sources. Plus they have to deal with whatever the University decides to do.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

I am not defending them. Both young men obviously made a mistake but 5-10 games seems very harsh, no? This will all go away within a few weeks and both will most likely have to pay a fine and maybe some community service. Neither will have a criminal record.
What is the precedent for saying they should be suspended 5 or more games? I cannot think of 1 instance like this where the crime was so minor and the punishment was anything more than a game or two. 5 games? Come on.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

If they played at a good many other schools, their suspension would last until the first game that the coach absolutely needs them. I never cease to be amazed at how the suspension time just seems to work out that way.

That's likely to be the case here as well. A few games vs cupcakes that we may be able to win anyway, with possibly the Pitt game, which we weren't likely to win even with them.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Mason clearly has not passed Underage Drinking 101.

First you tell PennDOT that you've lost your license so you can get a duplicate.  Then you alter the duplicate so you can give that to whomever asks for ID when you purchase alcohol.  That way if you are asked for ID by the police you have a valid, unaltered license to present.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

Yes, VBC, the old days are gone forever.  It seems like little happens to the good on the South Side.  I remember when all there was on the South Side was a mill.   Now back at the V. B. Cafe, cards were checked, sort of.  A library card usually got you in.  As there was a cop or two at the bar drinking (Lanny?)  trouble with the police was unknown.   And since it was walking distance to campus, few if any car crashes.   The V.B. was also a place to get wised up in a good way.  That joint should have been worth three credits.  Finally, I am shocked to hear that student athletes are drinking alcohol; next they'll want to be paid to play.

Re: Mason and Jones Arrested

"Laundry money" day was always a good day to be at the Van Braam, Mike.  I found that my friends on the basketball team were usually pretty generous when it came to making sure that their buddies were able to have clean clothes.  I also tried to make it a point to visit the Van Braam when certain players told me they would be going to Mossie's house for dinner.
