For discussion ...

For those of you who have seen the summer league games, and for anyone else who wants to offer a comment: Who should the Dukes' starting PG be in 2014-15?

There's really only one right answer, which I'll share after everyone has the opportunity to comment.

Re: For discussion ...

I was going to say whoever has made bail, but I'll be nice. Colter.

Re: For discussion ...

I would try Mason at  the point. The shooting point guard is the trend in the NBA. It has been the trend at DU the last two years too, but with a PG that shoots (and dribbles) TOO nuch. Mason is so good with the ball and may be better at creating shooting opportunities for everyone while at the point.

Re: For discussion ...

im pretty comfortable with a line up of
colter, mason, pick em at the 3, mckoy, and robinson.
we could go big or small the the 3. I like that.

I think the dukes could go 500 in conf play or one game on the +/- of it.
the a10 will have more parity this year and not be as top heavy.
Having alot of experience helps.

I can believe in colter, if, and a big if, someone steps up at the 3.
everyone knows mason is a threat, so teams will key in on him and pack it in defensively if we have know legit threat at the 3. If one of those guys can put up 12-14pts a night, its gonna make it easier for colter as teams wont solely focus on mason and mckoy.
in other words, I think the key to this years success is at the 3 and not at the PG.

Re: For discussion ...

Fair enough but you can't discount the fact that the A-10 has traditionally been a guard-dominated conference, even recently. Your pg doesn't have to be your best player. He doesn't even have to be second or third best. He has to be able to put your best players in a position where they can be effective, which is why I said what I did. The best guy might be Colter one night, Ridenour the next, Mason the next, etc. Doesn't matter to me who it is. What matters is that we win.

Re: For discussion ...

Interesting obsrvations of stats on MICAH MASON from Jon Rothstein whom he calls an "Under the radar A-10 player".  10.6 pts/game, 6 to 1 assist to turnover ratio, 56% from the field, 57% from three pt. range. Is Jon suggesting he should be a PG?

I don't see anything in there that looks like a suggestion that he should play the point. Do you really want your pg to be a big scorer? The assists are nice, but for me, I want Micah to shoot the ball. It's a bonus when you can get assists from a position other than pg. I like Micah at the 2.

Re: For discussion ...

I’m sure Micah could play the position, and would play it unselfishly, but I agree with duq81 that I do not think it would be advantageous to play him at the point. I can’t think of a better type of player at the off-guard position than a guy who can shoot 50% from 3, who can handle the ball, who knows how and when to shoot, and who plays smart, and who doesn’t turn the ball over. You could really wear him down and cut back on his shooting efficiency by having the ball in his hands so much. Plus, if we get improved play from DC and Des Ridenour (and/or Jordan Stevens), including better penetration, I think Micah’s the guy you want to kick out to … not someone who shoots half as well … and I think he’d make the best shoot/get it back inside decision. Having said all that, I would be happier if we won 20 games and Micah never took a shot than if he average 30 ppg and we won 15.
