Offline The Dukes will score 110 pts. and have 8 in double figures against Bluefield St. Offline Tysean Powell is a player. I like the combination of him Ridenour (when he is under control) James and McKoy. Offline not much to take from this game. bsc was pretty overmatched. their tallest player was a very generous 6'7. Offline This is the same post I made on the other board. Some snippets of note to the game. It does not go without noticing that Ferry used two lefties inside-McKoy and Powell-to replace Gill and Robinson. It's subtle, but think of the changes a defense is going to have to make especially when most teams are geared to defend against righties! The two freshman-Powell and James-tried to outdo each other with their elevation abilities. Wow, can they leap! Nice contribution of 16 points and 9 boards from the two of them. Also, coach used some zone with McKoy, Gill and Powell spread out down low and later had Powell, McKoy and James in the lower part of the zone. Des Ridenauer changed the game the moment he replaced a temporarily injured Derek Colter. He came to play defense. Ditto, Jere Jones. Colter looked absolutely comfortable taking Mason's passes and drilling a host of threes. Micah looked better staying in the middle of the fast break instead of fading to the outside. Jordan Robinson will eventually dominate a lot of games down low with his desire to get the ball. Overall, you had to like the versatility the team showed. The team met and exceeded expectations for this match-up. Now add Jordan Stevens to the mix!!! Offline not much to take from this game. bsc was pretty overmatched. their tallest player was a very generous 6'7. Offline What the team has, that it didn't in Ferry's first two years is depth. If a player is making dumb mistakes, or just not playing well, Ferry now has options on his bench if he wants to pull said player. Offline Hey, how about some love for DC? He wasn't hot, he was smokin'! I only hope he keeps shooting when they're falling (granted, no one can be this hot every night), but learns not to keep gunning when they're not. Appreciate Heels' comments on Domo ... Something is clearly not right. Offline What the team has, that it didn't in Ferry's first two years is depth. If a player is making dumb mistakes, or just not playing well, Ferry now has options on his bench if he wants to pull said player. This is what I'm seeing as well. Ferry is bringing in kids who are passing my eyeball test as far as being competitive in the A-10. Robinson, Powell and James all clearly have the size, strength, althleticism and quickness needed to play at a level that can get us an at large bid in coming years. LG Gill is in this group as well. Big kids who can play ball at a fast pace. Offline Hey, how about some love for DC? He wasn't hot, he was smokin'! Something is clearly not right. About time we got a shooting guard who can shoot. Last one I can remember was Micah something or other. Offline On the McKoy matter, I am going to take Jim Ferry at his words. I see absolutely no issue here. In prior conversations and on his post game show after the game agaisnt Bluefield he talked about wanting to get "maximal" minutes for Jordan Robinson because he was still "a pup" as is Powell. That, in turn, took some minutes away from McKoy because he was using the three small guys (DC,Micah and Jere) and Gill with Jordan. And, he said he wanted to try some combinations. I think his use twice of Powell and McKoy was an indicaator of what he was talking about. He used them as high double posts as he did with Gill and Robinson. As it turned out I believe Powell ended up with more minutes than Robinson or McKoy. But, boy was it ever worthwhile to watch Powell in real competition! I like the fact that he has some leeway right now during this weak OCC schedule for experimentation. These minutes now may not seem that meaningful, but I think this coaching staff has purposes for everthing it does. And, it has the luxury of versatility right now that gets tweaked just a little more with the addition of Jordan Stevens. Last edited by grammudder (11/16/2014 8:05 pm) Offline Stevens' minutes won't affect any of the big men. I suspect they may affect Jones at some point. I think James, if he continues to outplay him, will end up starting. Stevens and Ridenour could end up getting most of the 1-2 backup minutes. Offline grammudder i will take your word if you are taking ferry's word
Let me try this again.
Re: Let me try this again.
Re: Let me try this again.
positives: better ball movement, better offensive flow. less sloppy than shippensburg game
negatives: bsc was getting some pretty open looks from 3. not an issue today, will be issue vs a10 competition.
Tysean P- this kid is for real. gonnna label him rick james, because hes not just a freak, hes a superfreak.
what sets him apart from other "freak athlete' we have seen on the bluff is his body control, iq, and skill set. he knows how to use his body to get position, he takes care of the ball(doesnt bring it to the floor), squares up to the basket,etc...he doesnt have to solely rely on being more athletic...this kid will be special.
Mckoy--not sure what is going on here. judging by his body language and demeanor, something seems off or not right. Im not seeing his motor, etc right now. Im sure those with more inside knowledge may have a scoop, but to me it seems like he is in the doghouse and he doesnt seem overly concerned about getting out. im kind of shocked by all of it as I had pretty high hopes for this kid.
colter played the game of his life
mason is mason, though he did have some sloppy turnovers--trying to do too much
gill obviously didnt have the type of game he did against shippensburg
robinson looked good. love his soft touch. he was just too big for bsc's center
james played much better.
ridenour and jones gave you what you would think they would give you.
i wasnt too discouraged when we barely beat shippensburg, im not overly impressed by what we did today.
i dont think we will know how good(or bad) this team is until after the bobby mo game, and then again after VCU..we do open with a pretty brutal a10 slate...

I would not worry about McCoy, he has a lot of games under his belt and by years end we will be glad to have him playing, especially in road games and in Conference, he will do more than rebound Sokos missed drive shots this year....

The team is young and there will be mistakes and growing pains but there's enough talent and size that this group could surprise us and get good all of a sudden some time during this season.
Not sure what to make of the McCoy situation either, but it may well just be the case of these young guys being the better player right now and earning the minutes away from him despite his hard work and best efforts. If that's the case it can be a tough pill for an athlete to swallow and to sulk a bit isn't surprising. I'm just glad we've got him. He'll be a big contributor this year.
Our #1 target is signed, sealed and delivered for next year. We have Castro and Jackson sitting out, both of whom certainly bring a high level of talent to the bluff. I like the way the program is looking right now. With a senior led backcourt and plenty of talent and size up front we should be at large bid good in 2016.

i had(have) pretty high hopes for domo this year including an all a10 team, so its tough for me to see him getting less minutes, etc...
as long as the dukes win though, i guess it doesnt matter who plays
