Dukes disappearing in media

Tried to find the Duquesne basketball game story in the PG Sunday and couldn't. Went to the website and it wasn't there either. Still isn't. I wonder if the PG has decided to stop covering away games. Dukes don't have a permanent radio station, or coverage from the major newspaper in town. Even the blog on the PG site hasn't been updated since Oct.

Re: Dukes disappearing in media

Absolutely right. P-G has confirmed some of my earlier fears about diverting Mr. Nesbitt to other beats (Pens) in addition to covering WVU (since Morgantown has its own daily, I wonder why the Pittsburgh papers care so much). Trib never sends its DU beat reporter anywhere. You'd figure a stringer or the AP story would suffice, but we got nothing. Zip, zilch, zero, nada, adios amigos, close your eyese what do you see?

Nuttin'.

Even in our worst years we could read how bad we played in the next days papers.

Re: Dukes disappearing in media

Can you really blame the media?  The administration needs to look in the mirror for the situation there in.

The lack of foresight on the radio deal remains appalling to me.  The Jarrett Durham halftime interviews are horrible.   Thank God, Ray hasn't retired so some professionalism remains in the webcast.

But the solution is to attend all home and road games in person and not complain.

Re: Dukes disappearing in media

Pittsburgh Sporting News covered the opener and I'm trying to make sure all the other games are covered as well.

PSN is an up and coming sports site in the area that covers a lot of local teams.  www.pittsburghsportingnews.com.

I actually plan on writing articles after I get done with my gameday duties for the team at home games.  Also trying to get another writer to help cover it in a non-biased way.

Here's the article I wrote on the opener.  http://www.pittsburghsportingnews.com/duquesne-dukes-open-season-with-91-51-win-over-bluefield-state/

Jarrett Durham isn't a trained professional broadcaster. He's loyal to Duquesne & willing to fill any role where they need help. He's not the reason the newspapers don't send reporters to the road games.

Thank you!!

The reason why the Dukes are poorly covered is that the papers feel that there is little interest in the team. Only winning will solve this, and I mean winning at a high level. When you've lost the attention of the students, and most of the alumni, how can you expect people with no ties to the school to have any interest? Win 25 games, and go dancing, and watch the coverage get better.

Re: Dukes disappearing in media

I know JD isn't a professional broadcaster and he may be uncomfortable with the interview part. I love his insights as a former brilliant player and NCAA coach. And he really is a super person.

Maybe someone could script the interviews for him, or coach him. Would love to see a great Duke be successful at anything.

81, yep, you are absolutely correct. Newspapers have eliminated a lot of reporters, but coverage flows where the news is, so if we start the season strong and maybe steal a good upset (would love to see it be against Pitt), we'd win some back. Plus, WVU's season will be over soon. No more hick football.

Re: Dukes disappearing in media

Since I live in Fl I do all on line, espn covers teams and even can game cast with a lot of stats and current although somewhat delayed game cast play by play and active box score. Then they do a wrap up, that's how I followed the Last game.

Also could not find coverage in Pgh Papers, I agree winning 18 to 20 games and beating Robert Morris and Pitt would get some notice, but post season play is a must.

Fan base, I just don't know, mid 60 guys like me don't count, but better players and wins might excite local folks.

A diehard fan since 1961

Re: Dukes disappearing in media

I have always been an advocate of creating your own coverage when others won't give it to you.  This can be done with:

Games on tv in local market.  (A game listed as on tv carried by say Fox Sports Midwest means nothing to me if I can't see it in Pittsburgh.  WVU pays for Root to broadcast some of there home OCC games.  Why don't we?)
Quality radio broadcast (yeah I know I'm always harping on this, but a local station with a quality production helps greatly)
Social Media(Duquesne has made great strides in this area, tremendous improvement)
Newspaper coverage.  (If you can't get it on your own, why not beef up the coverage on the Duquesne website.  Put thorough game day articles written in house on the website)

Just my thoughts.  Of course winning helps but if other won't cover you, do it yourself.
