I am in substantial agreement with the above posts. This board hasn't been more negative relative to team record. Win and we'll be more positive. Furthermore, we may not be a big NIL spender, but we're probably spending more than we ever have. The more money a player gets, the more is expected. I'm not referring to abuse, but rather criticism when performance is clearly poor. What are ticket prices looking like? Sounds like there's a suspicion of point-shaving on this thread. I doubt that. The way that usually works, a leading scorer on a clear favorite is bribed by a bettor who places a bet on the underdog. The player misses shots on purpose, his team still wins, and the bettor wins because the favorite didn't win by enough. First, we haven't been a clear favorite. Second, no one is scoring enough points to shave. Third, with NIL money around, who needs bribes? You don't know. That's what makes life so interesting. You follow this guy (& his team) because he's been in the limelight recently and he seems to have done well recruiting transfers. You follow this guy (& team) because he's at the 'university from which I graduated.' You follow these guys because 'I'm running out of time, and I'd like to see a big winner at Duquesne,' There are no guarantees in life except we're all gonna pass on. Meantime it's fun following this team for the better or the worst. See you at the opener in November.... Well said. At mid-major, we have to take a chance, and Dru is very likely going to be a good HC. If he is very successful, it would take about 4 to 5 years of high level success to have bigger offer come his way, but if that did happen, it's because he elevated DU to a level of a Xavier or Gonzaga, which means we would again be able to attract another high level recruit to replace him. Gonzaga is an exception insofar as a good coach has stayed. Xavier--with all its advantages: Men's Basketball being premier there, Big East, 10,000 seat basketball arena, good academics, etc.--has had coaching turnover--Staak to Wake Forest, Gillen to Providence, Prosser to Wake Forest, Matta to Ohio State, Miller to Arizona, Mack to Louisville. They could have their own wing in the College Basketball HOF with their ex-coaches. They have us with 0 commits. It looks like if a player is not 3, 4, or 5-star in their ratings, then he is not considered a commitment at all and therefore gets a score of zero. Star ratings have not been that accurate historically anyway.. My favorite April Fool's Day joke involving sports: What you may have seen, DuqBlue, is that we didn't get into this new NCAA tournament with a similar name. I wasn't expecting to because the NCAA is so preoccupied with NET rankings and ours is 125. You will find us at the local Dairy Queen. Hey, this Catholic likes Dairy Queen, too! See you there! So happy for the players and coaches, all fans and alumni living and deceased, and most especially for the venerable Mr. Ray Goss. Google "goduquesne," find the Men's Basketball schedule, scroll down to this game, then click "Listen." I fundamentally agree with luckymcd. When the NET rankings first came out it seemed like the NIT committee just took the at-large teams with the next-highest NET rankings. If they are still picking teams that way our position is still precarious even though 3 websites pick us for the NIT. I would feel a lot better if we won today. At least the women can take some consolation on the fact that they were the ONLY A-10 team to beat Richmond. Last year the Women's NIT had a 64 team field so hopefully there will be an invitation extended. This new NCAA tournament (Women's Bashetball Invitational Tournament) is supposed to have 32 teams, WNIT 48 teams this year, and WBI 8 teams this year plus NCAA 68 teams. That's 156 teams. Certainly there is room for us somewhere. I applaud Dambrot for his availability and willingness to comment on the topic. For the life of me I can’t figure out why he’s so complementary of Capel though. I’m not saying he should be ripping him apart publicly or anything, but there’s no need to be that complimentary of a rival who pretty much single-handedly cancelled the rivalry. The bottom line is Pitt wouldn’t even be on the bubble if they were willing to play anybody decent (including the Dukes this year) in the non-conference. I suspect he's just trying to avoid "bulletin board material" which would rile up Pitt. There are at least 2 "NIT Bracketology" websites that say we will be playing Pitt in the NIT. He may be entirely sincere but I see advantage to avoiding criticism. I am able to find 3 websites that make NIT predictions: NIT Bracketology, DRatings, and The Barking Crow. The last has us playing Pitt. Perhaps DU should de-emphasize major college athletics - be more like Carnegie Mellon (They DO have a basketball team) The school would continue to offer the Duquesne Education to any athlete who desires one going forward recruit STUDENT-ATHLETES as opposed to ATHLETE-STUDENTS. Spare me the "Gonzaga Argument" where there is the talk about how admissions etc increase due to the quality of the basketball team - I will counter with the "Indiana Argument" when Bob Knight was terminated - contributions/donations to the athletic department declined - it was MORE THAN OFFSET by increases to the University as a whole. Perhaps more attention should be given to Andy the Accountant and Paula the Pharmacist as opposed to Joann the Jump Shooter and Raymond the Rebounder. Now there's a thought. Hartford (about 6000 students) went from D-1 to D-3 and St. Francis (NY) (about 2500 students) dropped intercollegiate athletics altogether. They're still in business. Besides, how many current students came to Duquesne becsuse of successful sports teams? I assume UMASS will have to pay the exit fee before leaving. Anyone know the fee? UMASS hasn’t done much in basketball since the Marcus Camby teams, but they were a charter member of the league, so that’s unfortunate. Exit fee from A-10 (from 1 tweet and 1 blog from December) is $4-5 million. The A-10 is the 2nd strongest basketball only conference, trailing the Big East. The A-10 is in seven of the top 30 media markets, including New York (1), Chicago (2), Philadelphia (4), Washington (9), Charlotte (22), St. Louis (23) and Pittsburgh (26). Every single conference game is available to view via national broadcast (79) games, regional and streaming. The conference tournament from the 2nd round on is broadcast on national TV. I'm surprised that UMass has thrown all of their eggs into FBS Football. UMass turned down a similar offer from the MAC in 2015; they were in the MAC as a football only school and the MAC forced them to make a decision to commit to an all sports membership. It is true that UMass was told to join in all sports or leave in 2015. However the A-10 was not a one-bid league then. Could it be that they think this move solves their football scheduling problem and makes an automatic NCAA bid more likely in a more winnable baskeball conference? KD knew he wasn't wanted by some at Akron. He disagreed with the criticism there that he lost the ambition to win. And I think he wanted to win here more than he did. Furthermore there hasn't been any scandal here. Only one player staying from start to finish isn't a good look but hardly a scandal. Whenever he leaves, the program will be in better shape than he found it. That's probably where Duquesne belongs... That would require a full commitment to DIV-1 Football - not going to happen. This is true but I've been wondering what being in the A-10 has done for us lately. We still have a season to finish and there has been a lot of discussion about KD's tenure plue the Women's team looks like they have a shot at a post-season tournamnet so the board is already busy. I wouldn't mind discussing this after the season is over or even now if folks are inclined. In my opinion Coach Dambrot did a solid job @ Duquesne. Word is he is done. Good for him take care of his wife. Yes I had expected an NCAA bid but the curse of Dudey Moore prevailed. Today I went on the Billikens board. They want the AD & Travis Ford fired. I go back to the sign posted in Richmond fire Coach Mooney. Hello😱How about the head coach at Chicago Loyola. In my opinion A10 coach of the year. Unfortunately, NIL can change a program overnight. Duquesne has to adapt. The Supreme Court rightfully so opened the barn door thanks to the goof balls at the NCAA. It is what it is. The Curse of Dudey Moore was broken by Red Manning and John Cinicola, the last two coaches who got us in the NCAA Tournament. However we have another curse as yet unnamed because we have seen this degree of success. So it seems possible but hasn't happened in over 46 years. Per FBSchedules: Duquesne at Boston College 9/7/24. Agree with Prince of Pilsner--much thanks, Phoenix. I haven't posted much here lately for a number of reasons. Mostly I learn way more here than I contribute on this board thanks to those who possess much more knowledge of the game of basketball than I. However, let me add regarding the coaching position, that everyone has a shelf life in any walk of life. Examples of those folks are Mike Tomlin, Chuck Noll, Chuck Tanner, and even KD. I do believe that KD's time here has been an overall plus for the program. We recovered from the previous regime's inefficiencies, and I believe that KD has represented the university well. However, it seems pretty obvious to me that the ceiling isn't going to get much higher than it has to this point. I believe 7 years to be a good barometer, a large enough sampling. My concern is, as another poster pointed out, that we might need to look outside the current coaching staff for a replacement when the time comes. While Dru Joyce seems to be the heir apparent to KD, I wonder if this would be a good move given his close association with Coach Dambrot and being seen as a disciple of his of sorts. I still cannot believe that Duquesne can't be a solid program such as VCU, Richmond, St. Bona, and even Dayton. I won't accept the fact that Duquesne is destined to be a mediocre program at best. There has to be a coach out there willing to come here capable of winning consistently. I do hope a good choice can be made without just turning the program over to a current member of the staff without a thorough coaching search when the time comes, and I believe it's coming fast. We need a coach like RE that knew how to compete with high level teams at a mid-major level.. Heck RE is 62, (my correction) and KD is looking 66 in the face. Very few coaches can come in here and teach a team to run like RE did. Last game, for example, set half court, feed to the center, to only go 2 for 11 inside ? it's just like NINE turnovers? That was the game, right there, They have T-shirts for the first 750 students to arrive. I would be impressed with that showing. They better be loud!!! At this level a hostile environment makes big difference. Dayton fans want all the tickets. Will they want all the T-shirts, too?Men's Basketball » Bad press » 4/30/2025 2:25 pm

Right now the cheapest end zone or corner seats are less than $40 with fees. Some sideline seats are asking three figures. I speculate these aftermarket tickets are from season ticket holders. Pitt is selling only season tickets now. Probably some time this summer they will sell packages, one of which will include the Duquesne game. From my experience season ticket holders prioritize rivalry games, marquee non-conference games, and non-rivalry league games. The demand for this game will get a bump because of the proximity.Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Maine Black Bears » 12/12/2024 2:17 pm

Several years ago the Canadian Football League on their website announced it was going to build a 50,000 seat temporary stadium above the Arctic Circle for the next Grey Cup game.
I thought for a while it was possible. After all we have had single-use natural grass placed over artificial turf for certain soccer matches, tons of dirt trucked into arenas for truck and motorcycle races, etc. Then the CFL reminded me that the announcement was made on April 1.Women's basketball » Duquesne Women In NIT » 3/19/2024 4:16 pm
WNIT is still a good tournament. I noticed that they reduced the number of teams from 64 to 48 and the automatic qualifiers are all mid-majors, but there are 6 P-6 teams in the field.
BluffHunter, it's logical we should have right of first refusal for a home game. It's the least we can do to reward this team.

I would feel even better if we proved Joe Lunardi and Jerry Palm wrong. They are picking VCU to win the league tournament.Women's basketball » Women Lose To Richmond » 3/12/2024 4:13 pm

I don’t think the League needs to rush adding another team. 14 teams is plenty. If there is an opportunity to bring in a geographical partner for URI, maybe that is an option.Men's Basketball » UMass Leaving A-10 for the MAC » 2/27/2024 4:42 pm

Note: women's basketball also benefits strongly from the A10 conference affiliation. Every single conference game is available to view via national broadcast games, regional and streaming.
Lower level conferences do not have this luxury. For example, take the Colonial Athletic Association (Charleston, Hofstra, UNCW, Drexel, etc.) - their major streaming partner is FloHoops (with some schools picking up the production costs for some regional and ESPN+ streaming games). Including their conference championship, they only have 27 men's games nationally televised on CBSSN.
The A10 is where the Dukes belong; there really is no better alternative. That being said, there are a couple of disturbing trends in process that the A10 must correct quickly.
1) Not getting multiple NCAA bids
2) Inability to schedule Power 6 / Top 50 teams as part of the non-conference schedules.
These somewhat go hand in hand. It has been very tough for most A10 teams to schedule top 50 games. This year, the A10 has played 25 top 50 teams, compiling a 5-20 record. Dayton alone had 5 games, finishing 3-2. The rest of the conference was 2-18 versus top 50 competition. It's just not a Duquesne problem, but a league wide issue (excepting Dayton) to both schedule and then win a big game. The NET has Dayton at 20; then the Bonnies at 71, with the next eight (8!) teams bunched between 72 and 108. Those numbers would have skewed significantly downward if there were 4 or 5 more non conference wins agMen's Basketball » UMass Leaving A-10 for the MAC » 2/27/2024 4:13 pm

UConn tried the same thing when they left the Big East to go to the AAC for football. After the wheels came off their basketball program, they came crawling back to the Big East 4 or 5 years later and UConn football is a D-1 Independent.

Still can't tell from their athletic department websites what Merrimack and Sacred Heart are doing with football next season.
However, Fear the FCS says Sacred Heart is going to be an FCS Independent in 2024. Merrimack is scheduling like it will not be in the NEC in 2024, either. Per FBSchedules, it has already scheduled 6 schools from 5 different conferences, none the NEC.

We lost 17 straight in 2021-22. Our last win that year was January 8 at UMass. That's got to be the most.
Notice that per KenPom our worst bad loss is their best bad loss: Loyola of Chicago. I hope that means they're inconsistent and have a bad day tomorrow.Men's Basketball » Has Dambrot Turned the Program Around Since He Arrived? Depends » 1/18/2024 5:55 pm
