What was the consensus among the DU fan base about Satalin's hiring?

I wasn't happy when Mike Rice was fired, but I was not surprised.  He and Father Nesti, the school's president at the time, were like oil and water. I've always said think of Mike Rice as that aggressive jock in HS gym class who teased and bullied the most timid kid in the class.  Donald Nesti was that timid kid. One losing season was all that was needed for Nesti to fire Rice due to various behind the scenes issues that I won't go into here.

The Dukes were poised to hire Gary Williams away from American after Rice was fired.  A contract was tentatively agree upon and Williams flew to Pittsburgh to iron out the details.  Mossie Murphy and Red Manning picked up Williams at the airport and on the way into town let Williams know that they intended to continue to have great influence over the program.  Williams didn't want that type of interference and the deal fell through.  He would later coach Boston College, Ohio State and Maryland.

Jim Satalin was attending the Final Four in 1982 with no thought of leaving SBU.  While sitting in the stands during a game he was approached by someone representing Duquesne (I can't remember who, but this was told to me directly by Jim himself) and he was offered a contract for so much more than he was making at SBU that he couldn't turn it down.  The Dukes had a new coach.

I like Jim and thought he did a good job given the circumstances.  He was greatly hindered by the false accusations of rape against 4 of the players.  I won't go into detail here but I will say that I know more about what happened than the average Dukes fan of the time.  All 4 of those men had their lives disrupted by a young woman's lies.  Those lies damaged our program for years.  Another thing that hindered Jim was that Duquesne was not St. Bonaventure. At SBU Jim had that alum's passion about the school in recruiting that he just didn't have for the Du

Those free throws from Lauren were absolutely perfect.  Just how every coach wants it to be done.

I spoke very briefly with Ken Gormley at the WNIT game tonight.  Only 4 words.  He didn't say anything to me.

I said, I hope it's Dru.
Ken just smiled.

Read into that what you will.

I had the opportunity to lead the cheer with the Red & Blue Crew back in the mid 00s. It was an honor to do it, though I'm sure I didn't do it perfectly. I was probably one of the few in the Crew who had seen Mossie at games since I'd been going since I was a small child before he passed.

If it should 'belong' to anyone it should be the students, whether that's the cheerleaders, the Crew, or similar.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree.  I appreciate that CLK would think that I would be worthy, but this old alum ain't gonna do it, no way, no how.

Another thing that I liked was all of us stomping our feet in unison to the clapping.  It made a huge racket at the Civic Arena and I'm sure that the clapping and foot stomping would be tremendous at Cooper Fieldhouse.

After Mossie passed away I had discussions with a number of people about doing the cheer.  Every single one of them, including a former player with season tickets who has since moved south, said that they were not worthy to lead the cheer.  I know that I certainly don't feel worthy of such a task.  My thought at this point is perhaps the captain of the cheerleaders with the rest of the cheerleading squad around her could come out to center court and shout "ARE YOU READY?!?!?!" with the rest of the cheerleaders then joining in with Ahoya, Ahoya, Shoo Shoo, Rah Rah, Shoo Shoo, Rah Rah, Ahoya, Let's Go Duquesne!!!

The t-shirts that were given to the players after the A-10 championship game are available at the bookstore.  I bought one myself last Thursday for $28.98.  These shirts are not listed for sale online.

Some thoughts on the subject.

Back when the Big East was formed and we were invited to join I was glad that we stayed in the Eastern 8 which is now the A-10.  It was the better league at the time.  Villanova also was begging us to stay in the league which included teams that are now in the Big 10, ACC, Big 12 as well as the Big East.  But the Big East named Dave Gavitt as commissioner while we had Bob Cousy.  Gavitt's savvy as an administrator would have the Big East leaving the A-10 in the dust.

If this comes to fruition it would be a basketball megaconference and I want to be part of that because I want at large bids in the future. I hate the idea of leaving the A-10 but it's something that must be done if the opportunity presents itself.

The Pittsburgh TV market has to be a major factor in us being considered for an invite.  I am happy to hear that Xavier may be on our side.  I'd love to play them again every year as I'd get to see my old friend Bob Koester more often.

Another major factor in being invited is NIL money.  I'm sure there's a minimum criteria required by the Big East and I'm thinking that if this has gotten to the point that you and I know about it we've either already met that criteria or are very close to it.

If we would join the Big East I hope we continue to schedule the Bonnies every year rotating home games.

I think Dru will be our new coach.  I think the announcement will be after the WNIT game tomorrow, perhaps on Tuesday.

Come out and support the women tomorrow.  I'll be there and it would be great if we had a packed house.  If you haven't seen Megan McConnell play in person you really should come out.  She is a treat to watch and in my biased opinion the best player in the A-10.

When I go to the YMCA I usually wear some type of Duquesne t-shirt and no one has ever commented. Until today. I wore my newly purchased 2024 A-10 Champs shirt and "Let's go Dukes", "Did you watch the game?", etc. were the comments from strangers today! Pittsburgh is embracing the Dukes! Let's keep supporting both the men's and women's teams with our cheering, attendance and donations so this success can be the catalyst for regaining our rightful place at the top of basketball in Pittsburgh.

That sounds fantastic! I hope the Panthers heard the sirens in Oakland, rub it in it a bit. Hopefully a lot of those fans are still fans in November too. It is pretty funny how many Duquesne fans have popped up out of nowhere in the past couple days.

On your Dukes fans popping up out of nowhere comment, I hear you.  I saw a comment on Facebook from a class of 1988 alum and my immediate thought was WTF, you M****f*****r!  The last time I saw you at a game was at Consol for the City Game 10 years or so ago and you were dressed in blue and gold and cheering for the lowlifes from up the street.  Some Dukes fan you are!  Crawl back under your rock!

We'll see a lot more media and fans next season and they'll stay if we keep up the good work. No reason to gatekeep being a fan of the boys on the Bluff! Unless they are primarily Pitt fans, THEN they can get sh!t-talked.

When you show up wearing the opponent's colors and actively cheer for them against us I will remember it and hold a grudge forever.

When Dru Joyce was hired as associate head coach it seemed apparent to me that he was being put in line as Keith's replacement.  So from my seat behind the Dukes bench I've been watching him to gauge how the players interact with him as well as whatever I can observe.  I see him as a coach who is completely engaged with both the offense and defense during the games and who is liked and respected by the players.  Plus he's got KD's endorsement and that goes a long way with me.

As far as hiring a "well regarded known entity with players" just who do you suggest this could be?  Do you mean a veteran coach from a lower conference like 7 years ago when we hired Keith? Or a recently fired retread like Travis Ford?  I certainly hope you don't mean an alcoholic acquaintance of mine who's older than me and of low integrity.  No, give me Dru, I think he's our best bet for continued success.

With that being said, if they do go another route I'll be very disappointed but my support for the program and for the new coach will not waiver.

I've been a staunch supporter of Keith since he was hired.  I was hoping he would stay for another year or two but with Donna now joining my late mother as a survivor I am certain he's making the right decision for his family.  Best wishes in retirement!

I am hoping that Dru Joyce is named our new head coach shortly after our last game of the season.  He'll keep us on a successful path.  I'll be very surprised and very disappointed if he is not our next head coach.
